India-EU naval exercise in Indian Ocean on June 1-3

NEW DELHI: India and the European Union (EU) will conduct a joint naval exercise in the
Indian Ocean
from June 1-3. The exercise will focus on advanced counter-piracy operations, interoperability, tactical manoeuvres, and enhanced communication protocols, reflecting the growing maritime security cooperation between the two sides.
This is in line with their shared commitment to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific region, the EU has said. "It is underpinned by the respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, democracy, rule of law, freedom of navigation and overflight, unimpeded lawful commerce, and peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, notably the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),'' it said in a statement.
"The exercise will involve Indian Navy ships and two frigates of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation ATLANTA," it added.

Who is Poland's next President Karol Nawrocki?
Karol Nawrocki, the conservative historian who won Poland's presidential election, cultivated a tough-guy image during his campaign, posting videos of himself at shooting ranges and boxing rings. While his liberal opponent Rafal Trzaskowski played up his European credentials, Mr. Nawrocki met Donald Trump at the White House and received the U.S. President's backing for his bid for Poland's top job. According to the final result from the electoral commission, Mr. Nawrocki won the election with 50.89% of the votes. Unlike other eurosceptics in central Europe, such as Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico or Hungary's Viktor Orban, Mr. Nawrocki supports giving military aid to help Ukraine fend off Russia's three-year-old invasion. But he has said that, if elected, he will oppose membership in Western alliances for Ukraine, a position that seeks to chime with falling support for Ukrainians among Poles, who have hosted more than a million refugees from across the border. His backers in the Law and Justice (PiS) party had supported fast-tracking membership in the EU and NATO for Kyiv while in power until late 2023. Mr. Nawrocki's critics said he was fuelling unease over Ukrainian refugees at a time when the far-right is highlighting migration, the cost of living and security. He cited his campaign slogan, Poland First. "Let's help others, but let's take care of our own citizens first," he said on social media in April. He is likely to follow a similar path to outgoing President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally who has used his veto power to block the pro-EU government's efforts to undo the previous PiS administration's judicial reforms. The EU says the PiS reforms undermined the independence of the courts. The fight in the right In the last two weeks, the candidates mostly fought for the support of people who voted for other candidates in the first round, in particular far-right's Slawomir Mentzen who came third with 15% support. Mr. Trzaskowski tried to attract them with promises of deregulation. Mr. Nawrocki touted his credentials as head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), support for gun ownership, traditional families and Christian values, but also a critical tone on Ukraine, in sync with Mentzen's. His wife Marta, a civil servant, and three children featured strongly in his campaign. Mr. Nawrocki's past has been a topic of intense public debate following a series of negative media reports. There were questions over his acquisition of a flat from a pensioner and an admission that he took part in orchestrated brawls. "All my sports activities were based on the strength of my heart, the strength of my muscles, my fists," Mr. Nawrocki, an amateur boxer, told a debate when confronted over reports he had been involved in mass organised fights between football hooligans. "It was a fair competition, regardless of the form." His Law and Justice party backers have accused the government of orchestrating the controversies with the help of Poland's special services and liberal media. The government rejects these accusations. Mr. Nawrocki portrayed the election as a referendum on the government, which he described as a metropolitan elite out of touch with their concerns. "I am simply one of you," he told voters in the eastern town of Biala Podlaska while on the campaign trail.

'Kept pleading for help': BJP's Nishikant Dubey cites declassified files to slam Nehru's foreign policy
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey NEW DELHI: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, targeting former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru over his handling of the 1962 Indo-China war. Referring to Nehru's appeals during the conflict, Dubey said, 'Nehru kept pleading for help.' The remark came in response to the Congress party 's criticism of external affairs minister S Jaishankar for 'informing' Pakistan about Operation Sindoor . In retaliation, Dubey took to X to highlight what he called the flawed foreign policy of previous Congress governments, especially under Nehru. Dubey posted a letter written by Nehru to then US President John F Kennedy, calling it 'the second letter written by Iron Lady's father Nehru ji to the American President during the China war. He kept pleading for help.' Sarcastically attacking Nehru's diplomatic approach, Dubey added, 'Pakistan is a brother, a friend, a good neighbour, we will reach an agreement with them, everything was written. But carefully read the excellent foreign policy of the great Nehru ji.' According to Dubey, the US passed Nehru's letter to then Pakistani military ruler Ayub Khan . Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on three-day visit to France, to strengthen economic ties
New Delhi, June 1 (UNI) Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is on a three-day visit to France during which he will hold bilateral meetings with the French Ministers of Economy and Trade to strengthen the economic partnership. While in France, he will also engage in informal WTO Ministers' gathering on the margins of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting, and will also hold bilateral engagements with trade ministers of the UK, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Nigeria and Brazil. The Commerce Minister is on a visit to France and to Italy from June 1-5, as part of India's commitment to deepening strategic and economic ties with key European partners and advancing a shared vision for resilient and inclusive global growth. During his engagements in France, Goyal is to hold bilateral meetings with French Ministers, including Eric Lombard, Minister of Economy, and Laurent Saint-Martin, French Trade Minister. The discussions will focus on strengthening the Indo-French economic partnership and exploring new avenues for enhancing trade and investment cooperation, a statement said. As part of the high-level visit to France, a comprehensive agenda of strategic business meetings and engagements has been scheduled - with top leadership of major French companies such as Vicat, Total Energies, L'Oréal, Renault, Valeo, EDF and ATR, the visit will feature the India-France Business Round Table and the India-France CEO Forum, fostering dialogue between leading industry stakeholders from both countries. During his stay, the Minister will also participate in the informal gathering of WTO Ministers on the margins of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting. At this crucial forum, he will engage with global counterparts on key multilateral trade issues and articulate the perspectives and priorities of India. As part of the visit, the Minister will hold a series of high-level bilateral meetings with key international partners. These include the United Kingdom's Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds; Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong; and Saudi Arabia's Minister of Commerce, Majid bin Abdullah Al-Kasabi. Minister Goyal will also engage with Israel's Minister for Trade and Investment, Nir Barkat; Nigeria's Minister for Trade, Industry and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole OON; and Brazil's Foreign Minister, Mauro Luis Iecker Vieira. These dialogues are aimed at advancing strategic economic cooperation and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships across regions.
