Who is Poland's next President Karol Nawrocki?

The Hindu2 days ago

Karol Nawrocki, the conservative historian who won Poland's presidential election, cultivated a tough-guy image during his campaign, posting videos of himself at shooting ranges and boxing rings.
While his liberal opponent Rafal Trzaskowski played up his European credentials, Mr. Nawrocki met Donald Trump at the White House and received the U.S. President's backing for his bid for Poland's top job.
According to the final result from the electoral commission, Mr. Nawrocki won the election with 50.89% of the votes.
Unlike other eurosceptics in central Europe, such as Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico or Hungary's Viktor Orban, Mr. Nawrocki supports giving military aid to help Ukraine fend off Russia's three-year-old invasion.
But he has said that, if elected, he will oppose membership in Western alliances for Ukraine, a position that seeks to chime with falling support for Ukrainians among Poles, who have hosted more than a million refugees from across the border.
His backers in the Law and Justice (PiS) party had supported fast-tracking membership in the EU and NATO for Kyiv while in power until late 2023.
Mr. Nawrocki's critics said he was fuelling unease over Ukrainian refugees at a time when the far-right is highlighting migration, the cost of living and security. He cited his campaign slogan, Poland First.
"Let's help others, but let's take care of our own citizens first," he said on social media in April.
He is likely to follow a similar path to outgoing President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally who has used his veto power to block the pro-EU government's efforts to undo the previous PiS administration's judicial reforms. The EU says the PiS reforms undermined the independence of the courts.
The fight in the right
In the last two weeks, the candidates mostly fought for the support of people who voted for other candidates in the first round, in particular far-right's Slawomir Mentzen who came third with 15% support.
Mr. Trzaskowski tried to attract them with promises of deregulation. Mr. Nawrocki touted his credentials as head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), support for gun ownership, traditional families and Christian values, but also a critical tone on Ukraine, in sync with Mentzen's.
His wife Marta, a civil servant, and three children featured strongly in his campaign.
Mr. Nawrocki's past has been a topic of intense public debate following a series of negative media reports. There were questions over his acquisition of a flat from a pensioner and an admission that he took part in orchestrated brawls.
"All my sports activities were based on the strength of my heart, the strength of my muscles, my fists," Mr. Nawrocki, an amateur boxer, told a debate when confronted over reports he had been involved in mass organised fights between football hooligans. "It was a fair competition, regardless of the form."
His Law and Justice party backers have accused the government of orchestrating the controversies with the help of Poland's special services and liberal media. The government rejects these accusations.
Mr. Nawrocki portrayed the election as a referendum on the government, which he described as a metropolitan elite out of touch with their concerns.
"I am simply one of you," he told voters in the eastern town of Biala Podlaska while on the campaign trail.

Hegseth will skip a meeting on organizing military aid to Ukraine in a first for the US

WASHINGTON — For the first time since the U.S. created an international group to coordinate military aid to Ukraine three years ago, America's Pentagon chief will not be in attendance when more than 50 other defense leaders meet Wednesday. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who returned from a national security conference in Singapore on Sunday, will not arrive in Brussels until Wednesday evening, after the Ukraine Defense Contact Group's meeting is over. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss scheduling details, confirmed that Hegseth also will not participate by video conference. It is the latest in a series of steps that the U.S. has taken to distance itself from the Ukraine war effort. And it comes on the heels of French President Emmanuel Macron's warning at the security conference last weekend that the U.S. and others risk a dangerous double standard if their concentration on a potential conflict with China is done at the cost of abandoning Ukraine. France and other NATO nations are concerned that the U.S. is considering withdrawing troops from Europe to shift them to the Indo-Pacific. Macron said abandoning Ukraine would eventually erode U.S. credibility in deterring any potential conflict with China over Taiwan. Hegseth's predecessor, Lloyd Austin, created the group after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Since then, more than 50 member nations have collectively provided Ukraine with some $126 billion in weapons and military assistance, including over $66.5 billion from the U.S. Under Austin's leadership, the U.S. served as chair of the group, and he and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff attended monthly meetings, which were both in person and by video. Hegseth has upended that position by stepping away from a leadership role, providing no new military aid and now abandoning the gathering altogether. During his first meeting with the group and a subsequent NATO defense ministers gathering in Brussels in February, Hegseth warned that Ukraine should abandon its NATO bid and its push to reclaim all Russian-occupied territory. And he signaled that President Donald Trump is determined to get Europe to assume most of the financial and military responsibilities for Ukraine's defense. Since Trump took office, there have been no new announcements of U.S. military or weapons aid to Ukraine. Hegseth also turned leadership of the group over to Germany and the United Kingdom. While he will not attend Wednesday's session, Gen. Christopher Cavoli, head of U.S. European Command and NATO's supreme allied commander, will be there. In Washington, meanwhile, a senior Ukrainian delegation led by First Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko is in town for talks about defense, sanctions and postwar recovery, said Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office. The Ukrainians met with U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg, discussing recent talks with the Russians and conditions on the battlefield, Yermak posted on social media. Svyrydenko and Yermak also are expected to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other officials Wednesday. Associated Press writer Tara Copp in Washington contributed to this report.

US proposes interim deal allowing Iran to enrich uranium: Report

The United States has proposed an interim nuclear deal that would permit Iran to carry out low-level uranium enrichment as part of ongoing nuclear negotiations, according to a report by The New York Times on unnamed Iranian and European officials, the report states that the plan -- put forth by the administration of US President Donald Trump -- aims to serve as a temporary measure while a more comprehensive agreement is worked out with global powers to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear proposal, reportedly drafted by the Trump administration's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has been shared with Iranian DEAL WITH STRICT CONDITIONS The idea behind the plan is to serve as a "bridge" between Iran's current nuclear activity and the US demand for Iran to pause all to the report, Iran would be allowed to enrich uranium at low levels, which would be enough to power nuclear energy plants, but not enough to build a return, the US would help Iran to build nuclear reactors and propose the creation of enrichment facilities managed by a group of regional countries. Iran is expected to cease all enrichment activities on its own territory as soon as it begins to reap any benefits from this of the main concerns is still the enrichment facility's location. Iranian officials are pushing for it to be built on Iranian territory, like the Kish or Qeshm islands, but the US insists that it must be outside of Iran. Since these areas are more visible, it might be simpler for foreign observers to keep an eye on them.A US official told The New York Times, "Out of respect for the ongoing deal, the administration will not comment on details of the proposal to the media."Iran has not officially responded to the proposal yet, but its Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made it clear on Tuesday that Tehran would not accept any deal that limits its right to enrich uranium. "We do not need anyone's permission to enrich uranium," Araghchi said. "Without respecting our right to enrichment, there will be no agreement."Must Watch
