India Gazette2 days ago

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 3 (ANI): Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who led an all-party delegation to Russia, Slovenia, Greece, Latvia, and Spain, described the visit as 'very positive' on Tuesday.
The delegation visited these countries as part of a global outreach initiative aimed at briefing key nations on Operation Sindoor and India's counter-terrorism efforts following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking after returning to India, Kanimozhi said that although the group had mostly opposition MPs and one BJP MP, it showed that India stands united despite political differences.
Kanimozhi also stressed that terrorism linked to Pakistan affects not only India but the whole world, and all countries must work together to stop it.
'The visit was a very positive one...the delegation mostly had opposition MPs and one BJP MP, which in itself was a message to the countries that India stands as one. In spite of our political differences, we stand together as one country... Every time there has been an act of terrorism in India, we have been able to trace it back to Pakistan. It just doesn't stop with India....the whole world has to be cautious in ending terror...no country should sponsor terrorism,' she said.
Ambassador Manjeev S Puri, part of the same delegation, said that they visited Russia and four other European countries, and held high-level dialogues in all these countries.
He said all the countries showed zero tolerance for terrorism. He added that they explained the problem of state-sponsored terrorism and urged the world to take strict action against such states.
Puri said the visit helped build a better understanding and showed that India is united in fighting terrorism.
'...We visited five countries - Russia and 4 other important European countries. We held high-level dialogues in all these countries...I believe that everyone is standing with us, that there is zero-tolerance for terrorism...We also told them that this is not just terrorism but State-sponsored terrorism. So, the world must keep an eye on these States and strict action must be taken. I believe that people understand this and our visit was very important...When you tell people something all by yourself, the understanding among people increases. Second, this was all-party delegation and everyone appreciated this a lot - that the whole of our nation is united and we are displaying a sort of national resolve,' Puri said.
The delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, also included Rajeev Rai (Samajwadi Party), Mian Altaf Ahmad (Jammu and Kashmir National Conference), Brijesh Chowta (BJP), Prem Chand Gupta (Rashtriya Janata Dal), Ashok Kumar Mittal (Aam Aadmi Party), and Former envoys Manjeev S Puri and Jawed Ashraf. Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya has drawn criticism once again for his comments on women's attire. Speaking at a public event in Indore, the Urban Development Minister expressed disapproval of what he described as "skimpy clothes" worn by young women."In Western culture, women wearing fewer clothes are considered beautiful. I don't agree with that," he said. "In India, we appreciate women who dress modestly, wear jewellery, and present themselves gracefully."Mr. Vijayvargiya made these remarks while drawing an analogy between short speeches and short dresses. "There's a belief in the West that women in fewer clothes and leaders who speak less are appreciated. But I don't believe that. To me, women are forms of goddesses and should dress accordingly," he also mentioned that he often asks young women who approach him for selfies to dress "properly" next time."Sometimes girls come for selfies, and I tell them, 'Beta, come in proper clothes next time, then we'll take a photo,'" he isn't the first instance of Vijayvargiya's remarks stirring backlash. At a Hanuman Jayanti event in 2022, he made similar statements, criticizing young women's clothing. "Girls today wear such inappropriate clothes... We call women goddesses, but they don't look like that. Some resemble Shurpanakha. God gave you a beautiful body, at least dress decently. Teach your children values," he had said then.

Bengaluru stampede: Dy. CM breaks down over deaths, HDK demands his ouster from Cabinet

A day after the death of 11 persons in the stampede during RCB's victory celebrations in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday broke down before the media, while speaking over the episode. The Opposition mocked him for shedding tears after allowing the tragedy to strike. Union Minister and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy demanded his ouster from the State Cabinet, accusing him of being responsible for the episode. 'The Opposition is politicking. But I am grief-stricken over the death of children,' the Deputy Chief Minister said, weeping, while interacting with media persons in Bengaluru. 'Those children had a bright future ahead of them. This incident has tarnished the reputation of Bengaluru and Karnataka. We have taken this incident seriously, and we will rectify the shortcomings. This is a lesson for us.' He said the City Police Commissioner had told them that the programme in the stadium should be confined to just 10 minutes. 'I had no plans to go to the stadium earlier. However, upon being told by the police commissioner, I rushed to the venue. Even the KSCA president and secretary could not go to the stadium, and I had to take them in my car. We spoke to the RCB management to keep the programme short.' He said this was a time for mourning and not for scoring some political brownie points. Counter attack Launching a counterattack on the Opposition, Mr. Shivakumar declared that he would talk about similar tragedies that have taken place during their regime in the forthcoming legislative session. 'I can list out all the tragedies that took place during the BJP and JD(S) regime. But I don't want to stoop to their level. I will talk about such incidents during the BJP and JD(S) regimes in the legislative session. I am not going to talk about what happened during the death of Kannada actor Rajkumar (during JD (S)-BJP regime).' Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy blamed Mr. Shivakumar for the tragedy and said the Chief Minister should sack him if he had any courage. 'The DCM's hunger for publicity even amidst the tragic deaths and his rude behaviour at the programme was the height of insensitivity.' He further described the entire programme in front of Vidhana Soudha as a 'show of daadaagiri (bullying) by Mr. Shivakumar.' Even after coming to know about deaths, he participated in the victory programme, claimed Mr. Kumaraswamy.
