KFON secures Category A licence, to be nationwide ISP

The Hindu25-06-2025
Kerala Fibre Optic Network Ltd (KFON), Kerala government's broadband Internet service, has secured Internet Service Provider (ISP) Category A national licence from the Department of Telecommunications, which authorises it to offer Internet services across the country.
At a ceremony held in New Delhi on Tuesday, Dileep Singh Sengar, Under Secretary of the DoT AS Division, handed over the certificate to Santhosh Babu, Managing Director of KFON. The event was also attended by KFON's Chief Technology Officer Murali Kishore, Chief Sales Officer Bilstin D. Geo, Chief Financial Officer Prem Kumar G, and Manager Suraj A.
In addition to the robust network infrastructure already established across Kerala, KFON will now expand its footprint to other States and collaborate with leading Internet service providers to ensure seamless connectivity nationwide.
Describing the ISP-A licence as a major milestone in KFON's journey, Mr. Babu said the achievement would further energise efforts to deliver enhanced services across India. He emphasized that KFON is committed to offering high-quality Internet services and continues to serve as a vital digital backbone for the State.
When banks or corporate houses which have their headquarters in other States call for tenders, most of them ask for ISP A licence as one of the requirements. KFON applied for the licence considering this requirement. As for starting operations outside the State, the company's plan is to saturate the Kerala market before it enters other States.

Revving up: Renault gets keys to Nissan's TN plant

CHENNAI: Four months after Renault Group announced its intent to buy out Nissan's 51% stake in joint India plant RNAIPL (Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd), the French auto major has completed the acquisition and become sole owner of the Oragadam/Chennai facility. 'India is a key market for Renault Group and also plays a vital role in our global R&D footprint. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India,' said François Provost, CEO of Renault Group. The acquisition is part of Renault Group 'accelerating its development in India' said the company in a statement. Renault Group has just named Stephane Deblaise as its CEO for India effective Sept 1, 2025 to lead the next phase of the French auto major's India strategy. Since its launch in 2010, the Chennai plant has produced more than 2.8 million vehicles — including 1.2 million exported to more than 100 countries — as well as 4.6 million engines and gearboxes. Supported by nearly 300 local suppliers, the plant has an annual production capacity of more than 400,000 vehicles; it is currently using nearly 50% capacity. Going forward, the plant will continue to manufacture Nissan cars as well as have some 'kind of contract manufacturing arrangement,' the company said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Renault expects the capacity utilization at the plant to improve as new models roll out of Oragadam for both Renault and Nissan. Currently dedicated to the CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms, the Oragadam plant is preparing to host the group's new multi-energy modular platform, which will 'support the Renault brand's future models,' said the statement. The group is bullish on the local market's importance in its global strategy. 'Renault Group looks to India as a key driver of international expansion,' said the statement. This is part of a broader momentum, highlighted by the opening of Renault Group's largest design centre outside France, announced in April, and the launch of the new Triber — the first model in a product offensive that will include four new vehicles. Renault will both strengthen its sales in the Indian market and expand its exports. This is part of Renault brand's International Game Plan 2027. Starlink gets licence for satellite internet in India, confirms Jyotiraditya Scindia

Elon Musk-led Starlink has received approval to roll out satellite-based internet services in India, with the Department of Telecommunications granting the company a Unified Licence, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed on Thursday. The announcement, made on the eve of the 30th anniversary of India's first cellular call in 1995, signals a significant step in the country's satellite communication (satcom) plans. Scindia stated that frameworks for spectrum allocation and gateway installation are now in place to ensure a smooth rollout of services. Starlink joins other players in the satcom space such as Bharti Group-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio SES, both of which are also awaiting spectrum allocation to commence operations. Highlighting developments in India's telecom sector over the past decade, the minister shared data outlining the expansion of connectivity and digital infrastructure. According to Scindia, internet subscriptions in the country have increased by nearly 286 per cent to reach 970 million users, while telephone connections now stand at 1.2 billion. He also noted that broadband usage has grown over 1,450 per cent since 2014, rising from 60 million to 944 million connections. The cost of mobile data has declined by over 96 per cent, now averaging ₹ 8.9 per GB. The government also reported operational improvements at BSNL, which has returned to profitability after nearly two decades. BSNL posted net profits of ₹ 262 crore and ₹ 280 crore in consecutive financial years, with over 83,000 4G sites installed, most running on domestically developed technology. India's 5G rollout was another focal point, with coverage extended to 99.6 per cent of districts. The country has installed approximately 4.74 lakh 5G towers and now counts over 300 million 5G users. With average monthly per capita usage at 32 GB, India reportedly leads globally in 5G data consumption. The minister added that India is among the top six nations in terms of 6G patent filings and has launched 100 6G Use Case Labs. Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, telecom manufacturing investments have reached ₹ 4,305 crore, generating sales of over ₹ 85,000 crore and creating more than 28,000 jobs. Foreign direct investment in the sector has nearly tripled, growing from $282 million to $710 million. Industry leaders also commented on the 30-year milestone of mobile services in India. SP Kochhar, Director General of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), said that the country now hosts over 1.2 billion telecom subscribers, with data usage per individual exceeding 21 GB per month. He observed that while the sector began with 2G, it now offers 5G access to over 99 per cent of Indian districts. HFCL Managing Director Mahendra Nahata reflected on the sector's evolution, stating that India's transition from basic mobile infrastructure to rapid 5G deployment has positioned the country to influence the development of 6G standards globally. Paritosh Prajapati, CEO of telecom gear maker GX Group, said that India's telecom sector stands at a turning point in its journey towards technological self-reliance. He emphasised that government initiatives, including the PLI scheme, are enabling domestic innovation and manufacturing in telecom. The licensing of Starlink comes as India attempts to boost internet access in rural and remote areas through satellite technology, further integrating digital connectivity into its broader development goals.
