Marcos eyes strategic partnership with South Korea after election of new president
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. is eyeing strengthening strategic partnership with South Korea following the election of its new leader.
In a brief social media post, Marcos congratulated South Korea's new liberal president, Lee Jae-myung.
''On behalf of the Filipino people, I congratulate Lee Jae-Myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea, ''Marcos said.
''The Philippines values its deep and enduring ties with the ROK and I look forward to working with him to further strengthen the Strategic Partnership between our two countries, '' he added.
Lee had won 49.42% of the nearly 35 million votes cast while conservative rival Kim Moon-soo had taken 41.15% in the polls that brought the highest turnout for a presidential election since 1997, according to National Election Commission data.
Lee vowed to raise the country from the turmoil of a martial law crisis and revive an economy reeling from slowing growth and the threat of global protectionism. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

VP Sara: Let's not surrender our freedom to 'traitors'
Vice President Sara Duterte on Thursday called on the nation not to surrender its freedom to traitors and those who do not care about the country. 'Hindi tayo lumaya para muling mawalan ng karapatan at maging alipin ng iilan. Ipinagmalaki natin sa mundo ang kalayaan ng mga Pilipino. Huwag nating isuko ang kalayaang ito sa mga taksil at walang malasakit sa ating mamamayan at sa ating bayan,' Duterte said in a video message for the country's 127th Independence Day. (We didn't become free only to lose our rights again and be slaves to others. We boast of our freedom to the world. Let us not surrender this freedom to traitors and those who have no regard for our people and our country.) Duterte, who is currently in Malaysia for a personal trip with her family, emphasized that the freedom that Filipinos enjoy today is the result of the love of the national heroes for the country. 'Paglapastangan sa alaala ng ating mga bayani ang pagyakap sa kultura ng pagkaalipin. Paglapastangan sa diwa ng kalayaan ang pagsasawalang bahala sa paghihirap ng maraming pamilyang Pilipino at ang paglabag sa mga karapatan at sa batas,' said Duterte. (Embracing the culture of slavery is disrespect to the memory of our heroes. Ignoring the suffering of many Filipino families and violating our rights and the law is disrespect to our freedom.) According to the Office of the Vice President (OVP), Duterte is scheduled within the day to attend the Independence Day celebration and engage in a program consultation with overseas Filipino workers in Malaysia. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

AFP launches offshore patrol vessel BRP Rajah Sulayman
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday reaffirmed its dedication to national sovereignty and defense modernization as it launched the offshore patrol vessel BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS-20) in Ulsan, South Korea on Wednesday. In a statement, the AFP said the launching ceremony was attended by AFP chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) chief operating officer and senior executive vice president Joo Won Ho. The event showed the strong partnership between the Philippines and South Korea in enhancing maritime security and self-reliant defense capabilities, according to the AFP. Brawner, in his remarks, pointed out the strategic importance of the launch, especially its role in advancing the Philippines' maritime defense. 'The launch of Offshore Patrol Vessel No. 1, the BRP Rajah Sulayman, is not merely the unveiling of a new ship—it is a bold declaration of our commitment to maritime security and the defense of our sovereignty,' Brawner said. 'This vessel marks a new chapter for the Philippine Navy, reflecting our resolve to enhance our operational capabilities and extend our presence across our vast maritime domain,' he added. According to the AFP, its new asset was named after a fearless native leader, Rajah Sulayman, who stood firm against foreign conquest in pre-colonial times. The AFP said BRP Rajah Sulayman is a modern emblem of the Filipino people's resilience, courage, and unyielding spirit of independence. 'As the nation honors its past, the AFP remains steadfast in shaping a future where freedom is not only celebrated but vigilantly safeguarded,' the AFP said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

PNP: Nearly 11K personnel deployed in Metro Manila for Independence Day
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed a total of 10,969 personnel across Metro Manila to ensure peace, order, and public safety during the celebration of the 127th Independence Day. 'The PNP is fully committed to ensuring a safe, peaceful, and meaningful celebration of our 127th Independence Day,' PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said in a statement Thursday. 'We call on the public to cooperate with our personnel, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activities. Together, let us honor our nation's history and freedom with unity and discipline,' he added. All necessary precautions and security measures are actively in place for the occasion's festivities, according to the police organization. The PNP reminded the public to celebrate Independence Day responsibly and to immediately approach the nearest police personnel or contact the PNP hotline for any concerns. 'As protectors of peace and defenders of democracy, the PNP stands in solidarity with the Filipino people in upholding the hard-earned freedom that defines our identity as a sovereign nation,' the PNP said in a separate statement. 'We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensure a safe and secure environment where every citizen can pursue a just and progressive future. The PNP takes this opportunity to reaffirm its role in safeguarding the rights and liberties of our people — a responsibility deeply rooted in the ideals of our heroes,' it added. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. reminded the Filipino people that sovereignty and peace must be proactively maintained and require collective and sustained efforts. 'Peace, to paraphrase others, is not a free dividend, especially in a world that is both increasingly volatile and interconnected. Challenges to our sovereignty will always be present; no archipelagic or even continental country is spared,' he said. Teodoro vowed that the Marcos administration aims to strengthen resilience. 'Every day we allow our defenses to lag, we exponentially lose ground in the struggle to be truly free and progressive. This is a time for genuine unity, where Filipinos, regardless of personal circumstance, must contribute the unique gifts that God has given each one of us to a concerted effort to uphold our flag within our own country and to remember it wherever we may be,' he said. 'In this way, we fulfill our sacred duty to be stewards of our homeland for generations to come,' he added. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
