'Back Again': Venus Williams Set For Peyton Stearns Challenge On DC Open Return
Williams is scheduled to take on compatriot Stearns in the first-round single clash, and will also feature in the doubles section alongside partner Hailey Baptiste.
The legendary Venus Williams is set to make her first competitive appearance in 16 months as the former World No.1 is slated to make her presence felt at the DC Open.
Williams is scheduled to take on compatriot Peyton Stearns in the first-round single clash at the event in Washington, and will also feature in the doubles section alongside partner Hailey Baptiste.
The 45-year-old Williams, who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, last contested a draw at Miami in March of 2024.
The North American summer hard-court season has officially begun with the release of the main draw for the WTA 500 DC Open on Saturday.
Twenty-eight women will compete for this year's title, including five Grand Slam singles champions. The top four seeds receive first-round byes.
World No. 4 Jessica Pegula leads the field as the No. 1 seed. Pegula won her first career WTA singles title in Washington six years ago in 2019.
An all-American first-round match between Hailey Baptiste and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin is featured in the other side of this quarter. No. 6 seed Kenin won their only previous meeting at the 2021 Roland Garros.
Venus Williams is in the second quarter, which features No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion. After her first-round bye, she will face either rising Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko or Anastasia Potapova.
Clara Tauson of Denmark is the No. 4 seed and has received a first-round bye in the fourth quarter. Tauson is enjoying her first week as a Top 20 player following her second-week run at Wimbledon.
At the other end of this quarter, former Top 10 player Danielle Collins of the United States will take on No. 8 seed Magda Linette of Poland in the first round. Collins leads their head-to-head 1-0, with a win in 2018.
Another American, Emma Navarro, anchors the draw as the No. 2 seed in the last quarter. After her first-round bye, she will meet either 2023 Washington finalist Maria Sakkari or Katie Boulter.
This quarter also features two major champions. First, 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu meets No. 7 seed Marta Kostyuk in the opening round. Kostyuk leads their head-to-head 2-1, including a win on clay in Madrid this year.
Next, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka faces Yulia Putintseva in her opener. Osaka and Putintseva have a tied 3-3 head-to-head record overall, but Osaka has won their last three matches, including two meetings last year.

2nd Youth Test, Day 2: India 51/1 After Ekansh Singh Helps England Post 309
Last Updated: India reached 51 for one at stumps after Ekansh Singh's century guided England to 309 on a rain-affected second day of the second Youth Test. India reached 51 for one at stumps after Ekansh Singh's determined century guided England to 309 on a rain-affected second day of the second Youth Test on Monday. At the close of play, Ayush Mhatre was batting on 20 alongside Vihaan Malhotra on six, with India U-19 trailing by 258 runs. What Happened On Day 2 Only 28.3 overs were possible on Day 2 after overnight and morning rain caused a delayed start, marked by multiple interruptions. Singh, who resumed on 66 after sharing a crucial 90-run sixth wicket stand with skipper Thomas Rew (59) on the opening day, completed a well-deserved century, scoring 117 off 155 balls. The Kent all-rounder added 100 runs with number nine James Minto (46) as England crossed the 300-run mark. Singh hit 14 boundaries and three sixes during his crucial knock. Minto also hit a six and cracked six boundaries in his 89-ball innings. Leg-spinner Naman Pushpak (4/76) broke the partnership by dismissing Minto caught and bowled before removing Alex Green soon after. Singh was the last batter to fall, caught by Rahul Kumar off Malhotra's bowling. In reply, opener Suryavanshi attacked early, hitting a four and two sixes off Green before the bowler had him caught by AM French for a quick-fire 20, reducing India to 37 for one. Rain interrupted play after tea, allowing only 3.1 overs in the final session before stumps were drawn. Brief scores: India U-19: 51 for 1 in 9 overs (Ayush Mhatre 24 not out, Vihaan Malhotra 6 not out; Alex Green 1/34). view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Not Sachin Tendulkar! Harry Brook Declares England Batter As 'Best Of All Time'
Last Updated: Harry Brook called Joe Root the 'best Test batter of all time,' even though Brook recently replaced Root as the top Test batter in ICC rankings. Ending all media comparisons in one swipe, Harry Brook declared Joe Root as the 'best Test batter of all time' on Monday (July 21). Brook, who replaced Root as the number one Test batter in the ICC men's rankings recently, said he was still 'not in the same league' as the senior Englishman and would rather he be at the top. Root, over the past couple of years, has made a strong case for himself as the greatest English batter. With more than 2500 runs to his name since 2023, he has gone past Alastair Cook's tally of 12472 Test runs. He's now only 120 runs away from leapfrogging Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the format, which will leave only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him. 'Everybody wants to be number one, don't they?" Brook said about the rankings and comparisons in a press conference. 'Him probably more than anybody else. He's a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him, so I'll happily let him have it. He's played for 12-13 years or however long he's played. In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time, so I'll let him have that one for now," he added. Brook and Root have been among England's best batters in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far, helping the hosts take a 2-1 lead. However, their biggest examination would be the fourth Test on a Manchester surface, which is likely to be of most help for bowlers so far. Meanwhile, England have included bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson in their playing 11 for the injured Shoaib Bashir. Brook seemed pleased with the 35-year-old's return to Test cricket after eight years. 'He's a wily old fox, very experienced. He's a very skillful cricketer as well. He's played everywhere, played against everyone. . . Hopefully he can land it in the foot-holes and create a bit of spice out of there and some opportunities to take wickets. He's obviously a very good batter as well, he's got nearly 20 First-Class hundreds. That's adding to our strength in batting. He's a good bloke, he's willing to always fight for the team. He's very competitive and it's good to have him here," Brook said. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 23:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
