At TD Garden, Katy Perry floats like a butterfly, stings like a B-lister

The days of unwavering support for Perry have dissolved like the cotton candy she once wrapped herself in during her seismic 'Teenage Dream' era — the sweet spot around 2010 that transformed her from a fresh face into an artist who could tie Michael Jackson for the most chart-topping songs from a single album. (Yes, by that metric, 'Teenage Dream' rivals 'Bad'). Carrying the combined weight of her diamond singles and myriad public criticisms at TD Garden Friday night, Perry insulated herself from the vitriol of the Internet, and performed her first show in Boston Advertisement The children and teens who attended Friday's show in droves felt like the target audience for Perry's current 'Lifetimes' tour. The kid-free adult fans? Not so much. Katy Perry performed in Boston for the first time in eight years on Friday. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff Children do not know the difference between a campy performance and an outright cheap one. They do not view an artist being strapped into a harness for multiple in-air tricks as someone falling back on distracting, often underwhelming gimmicks. They do not notice lackluster choreography or if an artist seems a little too reliant on her backing track. Advertisement And they do not question if a set is bloated with material from a poorly-received album — in Perry's case, last year's effort, '143' — while fan favorites like 'California Gurls' and 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' get clipped short. They do lend their high-pitched voices to thunderous singalongs, which often threatened to overpower Perry's pipes when she performed her biggest smashes, 'Dark Horse' and 'Firework.' To be clear, Perry's hearty soprano still slices through her hits with incredible clarity, and certain moments from Friday's show felt ripe with bravado and vulnerability — a winning formula for staying power. When singing her breakthrough hit, 'I Kissed A Girl,' Perry put on an impressive Cirque du Soleil-esque display that involved spinning upside-down while suspended from the ceiling in a cage (quite the contrast to riding a giant, gaudy butterfly around the arena for 'Roar'). Her stripped-down rendition of 'Not Like The Movies' recreated a bittersweet unraveling that felt as fresh as it did in 2010, mid-split from first husband Russell Brand. But it's hard to imagine anyone who came of age during Perry's rise to fame (reader, that's me) could be satiated by Friday night's performance, where baffling creative choices often dimmed the brilliance of Perry's peak years. This is an artist who once cooked up confectionary hits by the batch; a woman who was the winking face of pop for an entire decade. Advertisement Perry's legacy deserves to be upheld with concerts that cement, not chip away at, her place in pop history. Until the legacy feels better preserved, Perry's career will continue to look like it's already jumped the (left) shark. KATY PERRY With Rebecca Black. Bride-to-Be Suggests Guests Wear Their Own Bridal Gowns to Wedding. One Attendee Says It 'Feels Like a Trap'

A Reddit user revealed that she was worried she'd be the "only one" to attend in a wedding dress, per the bride's requestNEED TO KNOW A woman is looking for outside perspectives after getting invited to a wedding where the bride suggested guests wear their own bridal gowns for the occasion The anonymous woman shared her story on Reddit, revealing that she didn't want to be the "only one" who attended in a wedding dress "My friends say I should just do it and if anyone has a problem with it, that's their issue not mine," she wroteA wedding guest asked for the internet's advice after a bride-to-be suggested she and other attendees wear their own bridal gowns to her upcoming ceremony. The anonymous guest recently shared her story on Reddit's "Wedding Attire Approval" subreddit, revealing that a wedding website suggested guests throw on their own wedding dress for good measure. She also shared a screenshot of the suggestion, made by the soon-to-be bride of her husband's good friend. "How about, if you have one, and if you want to, and if you fit in it, your own wedding dress! Go on, it will be fun," a screenshot of the website read. "If not, then as fabulous a costume as you feel up for, whether it's an 80s prom number or your sequinnest onesie. OR.. just your favorite party attire, or chinos, or pretty much anything, just not formal. Extra points for medieval feasting finest." While the gown mention was only a suggestion, the Reddit user had some reservations. As she explained, her wedding dress "fits," it's "comfy and perfect" and she doesn't have many other options for dresses in her "limited wardrobe." "I worry I would be the only one to do this and get looks from the (very large) crowd, so it kinda feels like a trap," the original poster wrote. "But it's also literally in the wedding website sooo I kinda wanna do it to honor the request as also it's the comfiest public-facing garment I own." For added context, the attendee shared that her husband and the groom have been friends for over 25 years and, while she has "never met bride or groom" herself, she could have her husband double check with the groom on if the gown is a good move. "I dunno I want to but I worry people could be kinda brutal about it if I do," the woman wrote on Reddit. "Am I too in my head about this? My friends say I should just do it and if anyone has a problem with it, that's their issue not mine. What do you guys think?" The post's top commenters seemed to agree that, if the website encouraged wedding dresses, wedding dresses are totally fair game. "If the bride is suggesting it and you want an excuse to wear it again then do it!! All the guests will have read the same instructions as you and therefore will understand," one user wrote. "It's quite clear the bride isn't going to be wearing a typical white wedding dress so you'll be fine!!" "I want an invite to this wedding," another Reddit user wrote. "Sounds awesome. Wear your dress. There will definitely be other women that do. I would 💯 love to wear my dress again. The brides outfit will be incredible I bet. Please share it with us (with her permission obviously)." The OP later confirmed that, after the many "affirming comments" from her fellow Redditors, she decided to go with the bridal gown. And she had a game plan to dial it down a little, too. "I plan to check charity shops in my area for some sort of cosy and cute cardigan/shawl/wrap situation to break up the white, and give me a cover. Otherwise I plan to wear this with my hair down in waves, with a wavy brimmed straw hat and summery t-strap flat sandals," she wrote. "Maybe a cute belt if I can find one to help dress it down a bit more? I'm hoping this is a solid summer solstice/celebration lewk I will also bring a backup change of some fun casual street clothes just in case I feel overdressed." Ahead of the wedding, which she wrote would be taking place on a farm, the woman added that her "anxiety has decreased a lot with all your input." "I'll try to remember to come back in a couple weeks after the wedding to tell y'all all about it," she wrote. Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Former Googlers AI startup OpenArt now creates ‘brainrot' videos in just one click

AI-generated 'brainrot' videos are popping up all over the internet and getting a lot of attention. Currently gaining traction among younger users, these clips feature wild characters, like a shark wearing sneakers and a ballerina with a cappuccino for a head. One startup driving this trend is OpenArt, founded by two former Google employees in 2022. It touts around 3 million monthly active users. The company recently launched a new 'one-click story' feature in open beta, which allows users to input a single sentence, a script, or even a song and turn it into a one-minute video with a story arc. This can include anything from a light-hearted story for TikTok to more serious content like explainer videos or music videos for YouTube. OpenArt even envisions this feature being used for advertising. With One-Click Story, there are three templates to choose from: Character Vlog, Music Video, or Explainer. For a character vlog, users start by uploading an image of their character and entering a prompt. If a song is uploaded, the software understands the lyrics and creates an animation that aligns with the song's themes, like illustrating flowers blooming in a garden. Users can edit individual clips by revisiting the editor's storyboard mode and tweaking prompts for a more refined result. The platform aggregates over 50 AI models, allowing users to choose their preferred tools, such as DALLE-3, GPT, Imagen, Flux Kontext, and Stable Diffusion. Image Credits:OpenArt The goal of the new feature is to further lower the barrier for becoming an AI creator, a medium that remains immensely popular despite ongoing controversy. While these tools can be beneficial—like using video generators to quickly produce content with original characters and narratives—there are numerous ethical issues to address. These include imitating other artists' styles, intellectual property rights, and the dangers of misuse and creating misinformation. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW During testing, we noticed that the Character Vlog option may tread into a grey legal area due to the types of characters it offers—such as Pikachu, SpongeBob, and Super Mario—which could pose risks of intellectual property (IP) infringement. In June, Disney and Universal sued AI firm Midjourney over AI-generated images. Users should be aware that if their videos are found to infringe another's copyright, the video may be taken off social media platforms, and if the user is found to have contributed to the infringement, they can potentially be held liable under copyright law, which can result in legal action from the copyright holder. 'We try to be cautious around the IP infringement,' Coco Mao, co-founder and CEO, told TechCrunch. 'When you upload some IP characters, by default, the models we use will reject them, and it's not able to produce the IP character, but sometimes it slips.' Mao added that the company is open to talking to major IP holders to get licensing for characters. Image Credits:OpenArt One aspect that OpenArt believes sets it apart is its ability to maintain character consistency. It argues that, unlike the average video model that often relies on simple, standalone clips that users have to piece together into a cohesive story, OpenArt aims to ensure that both the visuals and the narrative remain consistent. 'A problem that a lot of AI couldn't really handle well is to have the character consistent in the same video…If you don't have the same character, then it's hard to get immersed in the story,' Mao said. Looking ahead, the company plans to iterate on the one-click feature by allowing users to create videos featuring conversations between two different characters. Another plan on the roadmap is developing a mobile app. OpenArt operates on a credit-based system. It offers four plans, with the most basic costing $14 per month for 4,000 credits, which include up to 4 One-Click stories, 40 videos, 4,000 images, and 4 characters. The advanced plan costs $30 per month for 12,000 credits and includes up to 12 One-Click stories. The Infinite plan is priced at $56 per month for 24,000 credits, and there is also a team plan available for $35/month per member. OpenArt has raised $5 million in funding to date from Basis Set Ventures and DCM Ventures, and it boasts a positive cash flow. Additionally, the company said it's on track to achieve an annual revenue rate of over $20 million.
