Kulsuma Akter: Inquest opens into death of woman murdered by husband
Bradford Crown Court heard during the trial of 27-year-old Masum that Ms Akter had been living at a refuge since January after he held a knife to her throat at their home in Oldham.
Following sentencing, Marie Walsh from the Crown Prosecution Service said: "Habibur Masum is a violent and dangerous man who subjected his estranged wife to violence and domestic abuse causing her to flee their home to live in a safehouse in Bradford."Unable to accept the relationship was over, he managed to track her down and then stabbed her multiple times."

Man, 76, charged with child cruelty offences over summer camp
A 76-year-old man has been charged with child cruelty offences after children became unwell at a summer camp in Leicestershire. Leicestershire Police said it received a report on Sunday that children at a summer camp at Stathern Lodge in Canal Lane, Stathern, had become unwell. Eight children, all boys aged between eight and 11, and an adult, who were taken to hospital as a precaution, have all since been discharged. Jonathon Ruben, of Landmere Lane, Ruddington, Nottingham, will be charged with three counts of wilful ill treatment relating to three boys at the summer camp between July 25 and July 29, the Crown Prosecution Service said on Friday. He was remanded into custody and will appear at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Saturday. Leicestershire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over its handling of the incident. The force originally said the incident happened on Monday, before amending it to Sunday, and it is still unclear whether officers only responded on Monday, and whether that is why the force has referred itself to the IOPC. Janine McKinney, chief crown prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, said: 'The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the prosecution of a 76-year-old man with child cruelty offences following a police investigation into a summer camp held at Stathern Lodge, Leicestershire. 'This decision has been made after reviewing a file of evidence from Leicestershire Police. 'Jonathon Ruben will be charged with three offences of wilful ill treatment of a child relating to three boys. 'This has been an extremely upsetting and shocking moment for the community, and especially for the children and parents most directly affected. 'We would like to remind all concerned that there are now active criminal proceedings against Mr Ruben, and he has the right to a fair trial. 'There must be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online that may in any way prejudice these proceedings.' Leicestershire Police said the 'owners and operators of Stathern Lodge are independent from those people who use or hire the lodge and are not connected to the incident'. The IOPC said: 'Our assessment team has examined all available evidence and concluded the matter should be independently investigated by the IOPC. 'The investigation will look at whether there were any breaches of professional behaviour – namely a failure to carry out duties and responsibilities – that resulted in a delay in Leicestershire Police's response to what was later declared a critical incident.'

Alleged leader of Mexican kidnapping ring released after nearly 20 years in prison
The alleged leader of an infamous Mexican kidnapping ring walked out of a maximum security prison after nearly 20 years Friday, hours after a judge said there wasn't sufficient evidence to support the charges holding him. Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez on Friday rattled off a list of appeals, injunctions and complaints filed over the years of Israel Vallarta's imprisonment in a case that never arrived at a verdict. Vallarta had been charged with organized crime and kidnapping, but a judge tossed those out Thursday. The Attorney General's Office did not immediately respond as to whether it would appeal. Vallarta was arrested in 2005, along with his girlfriend French citizen Florence Cassez. Cassez was eventually convicted and sentenced to 60 years on charges of aiding a kidnapping ring, in a case that soured relations between Paris and Mexico City. She acknowledged living with Vallarta at a ranch where kidnap victims were being held, but professed her innocence, saying she was unaware of their presence. One victim identified her as a kidnapper, but by voice only rather than by sight. A day after Cassez was arrested, police had forced her to take part in a staged raid on the ranch purportedly to rescue hostages and arrest suspects. It was covered by the media and broadcast on television. In January 2013 the Supreme Court overturned Cassez's conviction due to procedural and rights violations. She was released and became a cause celebre in France.

Pensioner charged after Christian summer camp poisoning
Jon Ruben, 76, has been charged with poisoning children at a Christian summer camp after eight youngsters and an adult were taken to hospital after falling unwell A man has been charged with the alleged poisoning of children at a Christian summer camp. Jon Ruben, 76, was arrested on Monday after eight children and an adult were hospitalised after falling ill. The pensioner, from Nottingham, is accused of administering poison or a noxious substance to children staying at Stathern Lodge, a residential activity centre used by church groups near Melton Mowbray, Leics. He will face three counts of wilful ill treatment relating to three boys at a summer camp held at Stathern Lodge, according to the Crown Prosecution Service, reports the Mirror. The East Midlands Ambulance Service established a triage centre in nearby Plungar following the incident on Monday, before transporting the affected youngsters and one adult to hospital. They have all since been discharged. Local residents described witnessing panicked parents arriving. June Grant, 83, a former bookings secretary at the hall, said: "There were so many sirens. You could hear the ambulances and police cars whizzing around the village. It was scary but such good news that the children are OK." A 28 year old woman added: "We saw all the ambulances and police cars outside. All the kids were very guarded. They would not let anybody near it. Everybody was pretty stressed out." Local Tory MP Ed Argar, commented yesterday: "The reports are clearly shocking and deeply concerning. Our thoughts are with the young people affected." Leicestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable James Avery declined to disclose the ages of the children or their origins yesterday. Mr Avery added: "The investigation is being led by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit's Major Incident Team." Senior investigating officer Det Insp Neil Holden further stated: "We understand the concern this incident will have caused parents, guardians and the surrounding community. We are in contact with the parents and guardians of all children concerned."
