Hong Kong have finally made it to the Rugby World Cup – now the real work begins

A 70-22 victory over South Korea sealed a sixth consecutive Asia Rugby Emirates Men's Championship title and booked a spot at the global tournament in Australia in 2027.
Hong Kong will be only the second team from Asia to play in the World Cup after ever-present qualifiers Japan, who have already qualified for 2027 after finishing third in their pool at the 2023 tournament in France.
The 10 tries Hong Kong scored at the Incheon Namdong Asiad Rugby Stadium, after they ran in 12 against Sri Lanka two weeks ago, took the team's total to 28 for the championship, underscoring the gulf that exists between the side and their regional rivals.
Once again they came from forwards and backs, with the former having the upper hand in the rout. Alex Post, the hooker, and Josh Hrstich, who started the game at No 8, scored a brace each, while James Sawyer and Luke van der Smit also crossed.

In the backs, Matt Worley's individual score – created by man of the match Nathan de Thierry, who kicked nine conversions as well as pulling the strings from fly half – got things moving with just two minutes gone, and he was followed across the line by Paul Altier, Harry Sayers and Max Denmark.

Hong Kong's hard-won spot in Rugby World Cup is a dream come true
Hong Kong is famous for rugby because of the enduring appeal of the iconic Sevens tournament , which attracted more than 110,000 fans this year. But excitement is now being generated by the city's performance in the more traditional 15-a-side game. Hong Kong has qualified for the men's Rugby World Cup for the first time . It is a big achievement. Advertisement Hong Kong produced an impressive display in the Asia Rugby Championship, winning all three matches comfortably. Qualification for the World Cup in 2027 was sealed this month with a 70-22 victory over South Korea. The team narrowly missed out on reaching the Rugby World Cup, the pinnacle of the sport, in 2018 and 2022 . This time, with the tournament expanded to 24 teams, the long-awaited objective has been reached. Hong Kong does not often feature in major global tournaments for team sports. The women's rugby team made the World Cup in 2017 and the men's cricket team has twice progressed to the T20 World Cup. Preparations must now begin for the Men's Rugby World Cup to be held in Australia in October and November 2027. Hong Kong's players, ranked 23rd globally, will need to be at their best. They will be performing on rugby's biggest stage. The last world cup in France in 2023 drew 2.5 million spectators and 1.3 billion viewing hours for broadcasts around the world. There were 425,000 international visitors. Hong Kong's presence among the elite at the world tournament should give a substantial lift to the game locally, encouraging more to take up the sport and attend matches. There is much potential to draw visitors to the city. It comes as the shorter – sevens – form of rugby has seen a disappointing reduction in the number of top teams competing in the elite global series, although it will feature in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The Hong Kong 15s team and all those involved in helping it qualify for the Men's Rugby World Cup deserve credit and congratulations. They have worked extremely hard to make the dream come true. Now, they should receive full support as they look to do the city proud in 2027. Advertisement

HK's National Games merch blends spirit and city icons
HK's National Games merch blends spirit and city icons Rosanna Law said the products embody the spirit of the Games, while incorporating elements of the city. Photo: RTHK Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law on Saturday said that official merchandise for Hong Kong's participation in this year's National Games will uniquely blend the spirit of the event with iconic elements of the city. Hong Kong is set to co-host the Games for the first time in November alongside Guangdong and Macau. Speaking at the launch ceremony for the Hong Kong competition region's official franchised products, Law emphasised the local character of the merchandise. "These products embody the spirit of the Games while incorporating elements like the scenery of Victoria Harbour, city landmarks and local cuisine, showcasing the unique charm of the Hong Kong competition region," she said. The merchandise, featuring the National Games mascots "Xiyangyang" and "Lerongrong" alongside Hong Kong-specific imagery such as Tai O and the Star Ferry, will go on sale starting Monday. Law said initial purchase locations include the Kai Tak Mall, West Kowloon Station and Wan Chai Immigration Tower. "In the future, we will gradually expand to more locations across Hong Kong for the convenience of citizens and tourists. The licensed merchandise retailers will also introduce products from the Guangdong competition zone for sale in Hong Kong," she said. Product offerings range from plush toys and pins to cups and other commemorative items. Regarding the Games themselves, Law said that preparations were progressing smoothly, and she encouraged the public to support the SAR delegation during the competition.
