Piastri shines bright, as Red Bull turn the page and Mercedes lose grip

Oscar Piastri continues to prove that his form in the 2025 season is no fluke, cementing his status as a legitimate championship contender in only his second year with McLaren.
The ex-Alpine driver clinched victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, stretching his lead in the drivers' championship to 16 points ahead of teammate Lando Norris, who followed him home in second at Spa.
The battle between the two McLaren drivers has been fierce and free of team orders, with both pushing each other to the limit. So far, Piastri has landed the more decisive blows, but with such a slim margin separating them, any slip-up could become the defining moment in a season that's fast shaping into a thriller between teammates driving arguably the best car on the grid.
While McLaren have surged ahead with unrivalled pace, the rest of the paddock continues to chase shadows. And with the Hungarian Grand Prix looming just a few days away, there's little time for reflection.
Here are three key takeaways from a dramatic weekend in Spa.

Max Verstappen confirms he is staying at Red Bull next year

BUDAPEST - Max Verstappen ended weeks of speculation about his future on Thursday when the reigning Formula One world champion said he would be staying with Red Bull in 2026. Verstappen said it was time to "stop all the rumours". "I've never really said anything about it because I was just focused on talking to the team about how we can improve our performance," the Dutchman explained at the Hungaroring circuit ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "And that's why I had nothing really to add, but I think it's time to basically stop all the rumours. "For me, it's always been quite clear that I was staying anyway." Four-time world champion Verstappen's future became a subject of speculation after rival driver George Russell revealed his Mercedes team were talking to the Dutchman's management about his future plans. It emerged that there was a performance clause in Verstappen's contract that offered him a chance to leave Red Bull if he was not in the top three at the end of July. But that clause has now elapsed and he will stay with Red Bull next year, the first season following a sweeping change of technical regulations. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028 and a similar scrutiny of his contract is expected next year once it becomes clear which teams have adapted and progressed best under the new regulations. Verstappen has fallen 81 points behind series leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren into third place in the drivers' championship this year. Red Bull are in a state of flux, after sacking their team principal Christian Horner this month and replacing the Briton with Laurent Mekies, the boss of their 'B' team Racing Bulls.

Verstappen ends speculation, confirms Red Bull stay for next season

Max Verstappen confirmed he will be racing for Red Bull next season, ending speculation that the four-time Formula One world champion could join Mercedes for the start of a new era in the sport. 'I think it's time to stop all the rumours. For me, it was always quite clear that I was staying,' he told reporters at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Thursday. 'And that was the general feeling in the team because we are always in discussion about what we could do with the car and when you're not staying you stop talking about these kind of things. And I never did.' Formula One starts a new engine era next year in a major shake-up that could change the pecking order, with Mercedes expected to be strong while Red Bull are making their own power unit after a split with Honda.

Atarah, who has been playing football for the past two years with the Rising Stars Football Club in her hometown, was handed the cheque during a youth-focused touch rugby exhibition match at the Western Province Cricket Club. The event, which placed the spotlight on education, sport and development, featured sporting legends and celebrities including former All Blacks fly-half Carlos Spencer, ex-Springboks Juan de Jongh and Rudy Paige, and actor-comedian Siv Ngesi. The sponsorship was made possible through Kensio House and former Proteas cricketer Steven Palframan. Atarah's proud mother, Lynzia Goodheart, beaming with joy, said: 'She's been kicking ball since she could start walking. Overwhelming, unexplainable, unbelievable. I see she won't be staying in South Africa very long – her path looks very bright. It's already starting at eight.' Goodheart added that she envisions her daughter heading abroad to sharpen her skills under the Real Madrid banner- her ultimate dream. 'I know my child has a very bright future ahead of her, that is why I am so thankful the sponsors could also see what I can, I know she will make everyone proud.' I can't wait to welcome Atarah to our campus. It provides a pretty unique education solution.' 'She will be well looked after,' Garner added, referring to the Generation Schools group. At the handover Sekhukhune United Football Club (F.C.) also announced a ground-breaking partnership with Generation Schools to establish a fully integrated youth football academy in Gauteng. The academy will combine elite-level football training with private school education for up to 144 talented young athletes, all on fully funded scholarships. It was a day filled with sporting fun Image: Armand Hough Sekhukhune United F.C. Head of Marketing and Communication, Tebogo Mapinga, said: 'We're building a footballing legacy that starts with meaningful investment in our youth. But our ambition isn't just about producing the next generation of professional players, it's about nurturing responsible, empowered young leaders. Too often, our brightest talents are lured abroad. This academy is designed to give them world-class opportunities right here at home. This collaboration will change the lives of the youth from the Sekhukhune region along with the rest of South Africa.' Jevron Epstein, CEO of Generation Schools, added, 'This partnership challenges the status quo. It represents a major shift in how professional clubs engage with youth development. We're creating a pipeline that grows talent from the grassroots up, while ensuring that each learner receives a quality education and access to diverse opportunities both on and off the field.'
