"What Part Of Germany Is This?" Internet Reacts To Viral Video Of Robot Guide In Grocery Store

NDTV2 days ago

Technology has seeped into the culinary world, making our lives a lot easier. From AI-powered tools in smart kitchens to cashier-less checkouts in grocery stores, innovation is shaping the food market brilliantly. Recently, a video of a German grocery store equipped with an interesting tech-savvy tool has caught the internet's attention. Well, the apparatus in discussion is a robot guide. The clip, posted on Instagram by a woman residing in this European country, captures the robot assisting customers to the shelves where specific food items are located. Now, how cool is that?
The video begins with the woman introducing social media users to a little robot standing in front of the store. 'You can put in whatever you are looking for, and it will bring you right to that section. So, we are gonna go test it out,' she shares. The robot comes with a display screen offering a range of common grocery items, but in the German language. All you have to do is select one and the robot will take you to that section.
Some items mentioned on the screen were canned food, noodles, rice, red cabbage, ready-to-eat meals, pudding, flour, poultry, baking goods and whatnot. The woman selects the noodles option and the robot glides through the aisles as she follows it. With the robot's help, the woman arrives at the particular shelf stocked with different brands of noodles. 'After it's done, the robot just goes right back to the front of the store,' she reveals. The side note reads, 'So convenient for someone who doesn't speak German and needs to find something specific.'

The internet had much to say on the matter.
'What part of Germany is this? Clearly not the same as mine,' asked a surprised user.
'But the machine itself shows everything in German. What am I missing?' pointed out another.
'Do you say DANKE (thank you) to the robot?' asked another.
'What about walking through the Store and just finding it?' commented an individual sarcastically.
'This is great! I wonder how the robot does when it's crowded and people block the aisle?' read a remark.
'Also great for people with social anxiety who are scared/anxious to deal with humans,' noted one person.
So far, the video has amassed over 1 million views.

Microsoft says to step up AI-powered European cybersecurity

U.S. tech giant Microsoft said Wednesday (June 4, 2025) that it would step up its cooperation with European governments against cyber threats, including by deploying AI-powered intelligence gathering. Its new European Security Program 'puts AI at the center of our work as a tool to protect traditional cybersecurity needs,' Microsoft Vice Chairman Brad Smith wrote in a blog post. Aiming to deliver real-time intelligence about cyber threats to governments, the scheme will extend to the '27 EU member states, as well as EU accession countries, members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the UK, Monaco, and the Vatican,' he added. Microsoft accused the governments of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea of being behind infiltration of European computer networks for espionage and other purposes. Meanwhile cybercriminals are expanding attacks using tools such as ransomware, which encrypts data on victims' computers and demands they fork over cash to unlock it again. 'We see 600 million attacks on our customers every single day,' Smith told reporters in a briefing ahead of the blog post's release, calling cyberdefence a 'multi-billion-dollar expense for customers across Europe'. AI systems can help detect and identify new forms of attack, Mr. Smith wrote in his blog post. But Microsoft has seen malicious actors using the technology for everything from researching targets to writing code and 'social engineering' — or convincing human employees to facilitate access by hackers. And 'influence operations' by nation-states 'are increasingly using AI to mislead and deceive' including with convincing 'deepfake' images, audio and video, Smith added. The company itself 'tracks any malicious use of new AI models we release and proactively prevents known threat actors from using' them, he wrote. Microsoft last month helped police across Europe take down large swathes of digital infrastructure supporting an 'infostealing' network, Lumma, that had been gathering sensitive information like passwords and crypto wallets from victims' devices. In future, members of the company's Digital Crimes Unit will be embedded with Europol's cybercrime specialists in The Hague, Smith wrote, part of a broader increase in collaboration with European security forces. Microsoft's cybersecurity effort is part of a wider push to increase its operations in Europe. The drive comes as trade tensions simmer between the EU and the Trump administration in the U.S., with many voices questioning European firms' strategic dependence on American-made technology.

Meta upgrades online ad tools to let brands optimise for value and profit

Meta is making changes to its ads ecosystem to let advertisers share information about the types of outcomes they value and how they measure success. The company announced updates to its suite of advertising tools such as Value Optimization, Incremental Attribution, and Value Rules on Wednesday, June 4. It said that advertisers who were focused on maximising the value of conversions rather than the total number of conversions saw a 12 per cent higher return on ad spend (ROAS) on average. For example, a business using value optimisation with a $200 campaign budget would prefer $500 in revenue from three sales for a ROAS of 2.5 over $400 in revenue from four sales for a ROAS of 1.25. Hence, Meta said it has accordingly rolled out updates to its existing value optimisation solution. 'In an era of AI-enabled advertising where the best performing campaigns are those that have flexibility to find the most relevant customers, our goal is to help advertisers guide our ads system to optimize for the outcomes that are most important to their business,' Meta said in a statement. This comes just days after reports indicated that Meta plans to let brands fully create and target ads using its AI tools by the end of next year. A brand could provide a product image and a budget, and Meta's AI would generate the ad, including image, video and text, and then determine user targeting on Instagram and Facebook with budget suggestions, according to a Wall Street Journal report. While most advertisers consider purchase size or profit to be ROAS, some calculate the metric based on value associated with a custom event or a non-purchase standard event, such as getting someone to make their first purchase, or having someone sign up for a subscription. For such advertisers, Meta said it is testing the ability for them to share data through a Conversions API that highlights the profit driven from a sale. The company provided the example of Laura Geller, a beauty brand that was able to improve its ROAS through its ad campaigns on Meta after using the upgraded ad products. '. Compared to their business as usual campaigns focused on new purchasers, they were able to increase ROAS by 46 per cent,' Meta said. In addition, advertisers on Meta will also now be able to share more granular click-level attribution information, such as an individual click credited with a conversion, with the tech giant. Meta also supports Analytics integrations of Adobe Advertising, Northbeam, Rockerbox, Triple Whale, and other partners.
