New driving licence rule kicks in for millions of Brits TODAY – are you impacted?

The Sun10-06-2025

A NEW driving licence rule has officially been brought in, changing what a standard permit can legally cover.
British motorist who hold a standard Category B licence will now be allowed to drive zero-emission vehicles weighing up to 4,250kg.
Under this update, millions of UK drivers will now be able to legally drive an electric van or small truck with a standard vehicle licence.
Previously, motorists would have been required to provide a higher licence category.
The rule change is aimed at making it easier to switch to greener vehicles, which often weigh more due to large battery packs or hydrogen fuel systems.
A typical medium-sized electric delivery van or passenger minibus can weigh close to 4,250kg, especially when fitted with extra equipment.
This is a significant increase from the 3,500kg limit which was previously in place.
The licence update is expected to support the growing shift towards greener transport options.
Use of zero emission vehicles has grown significantly in recent years as drivers embrace cleaner motoring.
Beginning today, motorists with a Category B driving licence can drive an electric or hydrogen-powered vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 4,250kg.
In order to be eligible, the vehicle must be a zero emission vehicle.
Meanwhile, the MAM limit for petrol and diesel vehicles remains at 3,500kg when driving with a category B licence.

To fall in within the category, the vehicle must be classified as a van or a light commercial vehicle.
The rule applies to standard vehicles that can be used with a Category B licence, including cars, SUVs, vans, and small trucks.
Vehicles which use specialist equipment to support disabled passengers can have a MAM of up to 5,000kg, however, the extra 750kg must be attributable to the equipment.
Category B licence holders can also tow a trailer with a MAM up to 3,500kg wit a petrol, diesel, electric, or hydrogen vehicle.
However, the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer must not exceed 7,000kg.
Top 10 most common driving licence codes and what they mean
EVER turned your driving licence over and wondered what the random collection of numbers mean?
If not, you should because the codes could land you with a fine and penalty points if you don't understand what they're there for.
Here are the ten most common codes and what they mean:
01 - eyesight correction, for example glasses or contact lenses
02 - hearing/communication aid
40 - modified steering
101 - not for hire or reward (that is, not to make a profit)
105 - vehicle not more than 5.5metres long
106 - restricted to vehicles with automatic transmissions
107 - not more than 8,250 kilograms
111 - limited to 16 passenger seats
115 - organ donor
122 - valid on successful completion: Basic Moped Training Course 125 - tricycles only (for licences issued before June 29, 2014)
For a full list visit the DVLA website.
And if someone with a Category B licence passed their test before January 1, 1997, they can drive a vehicle and trailer combination as heavy as 8,250kg.
The UK Government reports that zero emission vehicles are constructed to the "same high standards" as equivalent internal combustion engine vehicles.
However, they still advised drivers to ensure they are familiar with using the controls, as the zero emissions vehicles can "handle differently".
Motorists are advised to practice driving the vehicle in a safe and controlled environment, especially before towing a trailer.
'When driving, you should understand how to safely manoeuvre the vehicle and trailer," the DVSA said.
"If the trailer starts to snake or swerve, ease off the accelerator and reduce your speed gently.
"Do not brake harshly on a bend, as it makes the trailer unstable.'
While there won't be any physical changes made to the Category B licence, the entitlement will apply to all motorists who hold it.
The Government offers an online service for checking your driving entitlements and what restrictions may apply.
It's especially important for anyone unsure about their rights, particularly if they passed their driving test before licensing rules changed in 1997.
Drivers in Northern Ireland should note that licence categories may differ slightly and should check regional guidance.
The changes come at a time when the UK is encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles to meet its net zero targets.

Volkswagen GTI Edition 50 Revealed With Golf R-Rivaling Horsepower

Introducing the new king of FWD hatchbacks A few days after confirming that it's the quickest production Volkswagen around the Nurburgring, the brand has officially taken the covers off the Golf GTI Edition 50. It arrives at the perfect time for the iconic Golf nameplate, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. With this reveal, we have more insight into how VW managed to get a front-wheel-drive GTI around the famous Green Hell more quickly than the all-wheel-drive Golf R, which is quite an achievement. Thanks to a Performance Package and even more power than we were expecting, this hottest Golf GTI achieved a Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds. Nearly As Powerful As Golf R The final specs are in, and this is clearly no ordinary GTI. Whereas the standard GTI produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque (making it slightly less powerful than the European GTI), the GTI Edition 50 gets achingly close to the Golf R with outputs of 321 hp and 310 lb-ft. That's only 7 hp less than the R, and torque is exactly the same. This GTI is also more powerful than the Civic Type R (315 hp), often considered the king of FWD hot hatchbacks. Riding on a special Performance chassis, VW used half a century of experience in developing the GTI to perfect this model. The Golf VIII GTI Clubsport was used as a starting point, before the team added semi-slick tires and more precise steering. The front differential lock was also tuned for this application. Source: Volkswagen Go for the GTI Performance package, and the car gets higher spring rates, a further lowering of the ride height, special suspension mounts, lighter forged wheels, a weight-saving Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, and 235 Potenza Race semi-slick tires from Bridgestone. The cumulative effect of these changes left racing driver Benjamin Leuchter deeply impressed. 'For me, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is the most precise and sporty Volkswagen I've ever driven,' says Leuchter. 'It reminds me a lot of the Golf GTI Clubsport S from 2016. However, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 has been systematically enhanced once again. Because it's so intuitive and precise, I have a lot of confidence in the car and can really push it to the limit.' Sporty Looks Match Record Pace Outside, the GTI Edition 50 gets a choice of five exterior colors: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Tornado Red, and Dark Moss Green. The red is especially closely tied to various VW performance cars from the past, including the Golf VR6 Mk3. GTI 50 logos, a black roof and mirrors, and a distinctive side stripe combine to visually differentiate this special Golf. Inside, the nostalgic check pattern has been applied to the supportive seats, which has red detailing. The GTI 50 logo can be found on the steering wheel, which also houses paddles for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. 'The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is our fastest and most powerful GTI to date. With the optional Performance package, we have taken the GTI concept to a whole new level,' explains Sebastian Willmann, Head of the Chassis Development and Driving Dynamics Department at VW. There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but we expect a figure far above the $32,445 starting price of the normal GTI. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

2026 BMW M3 Pricing Revealed

2026 M3 Gets Away With Relatively Small Increase The current tensions surrounding the ongoing tariff deliberations and revisions are causing German automakers to sweat. Although BMW has been doing its best to keep consequent price adjustments from impacting its customers' wallets, there's only so much that can be done while still keeping shareholders happy. After all, BMW is a business and needs to turn a profit. And when shoppers are already forking out over $100k with all the options for the current M3, a $2,380 increase across the range (compared to the launch price) isn't anything to loosen one's collar over. If you're one of those individuals, the configurator for the 2026 model year will soon go live, and it's always plenty of fun to play with. If not, read on, and we'll break the new pricing down. The 2026 BMW M3 Still Sneaks In Below $80k That's right. For the new model year, that $2,380 price bump means a base MSRP of $78,400, according to a pricing guide obtained by Bimmer Post. If you want the added bragging rights that come with the M3 Competition, however, you'll pay at least $82,600. And if you want the extra power that is now offered by the M xDrive-fitted M3 Competition, you'll be forking over a minimum of $87,700. Before you even think about options, you need to add the automaker's destination and handling fee of $1,175 to the equation. That's actually come down from the 2025 model, which was set at $1,195. Here's the overall difference with respective destination charges applied: Model 2024 Price 2025 Price Difference M3 $77,195 $79,575 +$2,380 M3 Competition $81,395 $83,775 +$2,380 M3 Competition w/ M xDrive $86,495 $88,875 +$2,380 Optional Packages Can Push Final Price Near $120K To complete the aggressive look, you may want to take a look at the Carbon Package, adding another $15,300 for the regular M3 and $14,300 for Competition variants. That does not include the carbon bucket seats you get as standard in a CS-badged Bimmer, so set aside another $4,500. If you really want to impress BMW fanatics, consider the gold brake calipers, because those indicate $8,500 carbon-ceramics. To unlock the full capabilities of your new M3, tick the box marked 'M Driver's Package' for $2,500, moving the speed limiter's needle from 155 mph to 180. Tick all those boxes (and choose a plain color inside and out), and you'll just sneak in below $120,000. 2026 BMW M3 Production Begins Very Soon So why isn't the configurator live just yet if pricing guides are becoming available? Well, BMW is only expected to begin production of U.S.-bound 2026 M3 sedans in July, and the pricing guide gives its dealers a heads-up, allowing them to plan their pricing strategies for the coming month. In the meantime, Bimmer Post has full pdf documents of both the new pricing guide and the ordering guide, so if you intend on reserving a special optional extra that will add to your build time, head over to your nearest BMW dealer soon and put your name down. Alternatively, wait until the 2026 models hit the lots and take advantage of deals and incentives on low-mileage and unsold 2025 models. Those should come in considerably cheaper, and any opportunity to get over 500 horsepower and an iconic badge is worth considering. Oops! We're unable to load this content right now.
