What to expect from South Africa-bound new Toyota RAV4
Named the world's best selling vehicle of 2024 with global sales, including those of its Chinese sibling, the Wildlander, of 1 187 000 units, the current fifth generation Toyota RAV4 will officially bow-out next year in South Africa after what will be seven years.
On-sale, globally, since 2018, the internally named XA50 will make way for the XA60 at an undisclosed time in 2026, with the exact powertrain and model line-up still to be revealed.
The first generation RAV4 to be powered solely by hybrid powertrains, XA60 rides on a heavily revised of its predecessor's TNGA-K platform with not only uprated suspension joints, but also upgraded frame mounts and, in the case of the new off-road focused variant, 13 mm more ground clearance.
Said to be more practical than the XA50, the XA60's interior has also been dramatically to include the same steering wheel as the North American Tacoma bakkie, a centre console seemingly derived from the Land Cruiser Prado and a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Based on the US-variant, the RAV4 also gains a new freestanding infotainment system in two sizes; 10.5-inches and 12.9-inches, both equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In terms of specification, notable items, which will vary depending on the eventual trim level, comprise a Head-Up Display, heated front seats, a nine-speaker JBL sound system and the first-time inclusion of Toyota'a Safety Sense array of safety and driver assistance systems.
As mentioned, the RAV4's biggest difference from previous generations involves the solitary availability of hybrid powertrains as Toyota has opted to drop all 'conventional' combustion engine options.
Modelled around the stalwart 2.5-litre petrol engine, outputs, again based on those of the Stateside model, amount to 166 kW or 174 kW with the inclusion of a second electric motor on E-Four all-wheel-drive models.
At the range's summit, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines the same petrol engine with a 22.7-kWh battery pack powering two electric motors.
The result is a combined system output of 235 kW, more than not only the outgoing RAV4 PHEV, but also than all of Toyota's current GR models excluding the GR Supra.
What's more, the PHEV will the sole option for the new GR Sport, which finally becomes an export variant having previously be marketed solely in Europe and Japan.
Reported to have a starting price tag of $35 000 in the States, which amount to R when directly converted and without taxes, the RAV4's market arrival, as mentioned, will take place next year at a still undisclosed time.
As a reminder, the current line-up spans five models priced from R719 800 for the entry-level all-wheel-drive 2.0 GX-R to R858 500 for the flagship Hybrid VX E-Four.
Thus, expect a considerable premium to be applicable once sales of the XA60 start next year.

A surprise reveal at its annual State of the Motor Industry (SOMI) conference at the end of January, Toyota has released official pricing of the eagerly awaited Hilux Legend 55 on its website. Ahead of its formal launch next month, the traditional commemorative special edition 55 debuts five years after the Legend 50, and marks 55 years since the first Hilux went on-sale in South Africa. Based on the standard Legend, and therefore positioned between it and the Legend RS, the 55's unique aesthetic comprises model specific 18-inch alloy wheels, a Legend 55 branded sports bar, a standard rubberised loadbin and manual roller shutter, silver bashplate underneath the front bumper, and Legend 55 badges. Eschewing the widebody design as the variant shown at SOMI, the Legend 55's exterior additions conclude with a Legend 55 animation projected onto the doors, and the option of the Dark Green Metallic paint option the former came decked-out in. Besides the latter, nine other hues can be selected from; Glacier White, Oxide Bronze, Chromium Silver, Arizona Red, Inferno Metallic, Platinum White Pearl and Graphite Grey Metallic. Available in limited quantity is Sand Beige, with Attitude Black being a similar limited run option. Inside, the revisions are more subtle by including black leather seats with Legend 55 embroidery work on the front headrests, Legend 55 branded treadplates, a Legend 55 plaque behind the gear lever on the centre console, and the JBL sound system from the Legend RS. Standard specification is, otherwise unchanged from the standard Hilux Legend, although up front, Toyota has opted not to include the 48-volt mild-hybrid version of the 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesel engine. As such, the Legend 55 is motivated by the non-electrically assisted unit that still pushes-out 150kW/500Nm. Drive is again routed to the rear or all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. Price Available in Xtra and double cab bodystyles, the Legend 55's sticker prices include a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a nine-service/90 000 km service plan. Robots race, play football, crash and collapse at China's ‘robot Olympics'
China kicked off the three-day long World Humanoid Robot Games on Friday, looking to showcase its advances in artificial intelligence and robotics with 280 teams from 16 countries. Robots competed in sports such as track and field and table tennis and tackled robot-specific challenges from sorting medicines and handling materials to cleaning services. Teams came from countries including the US, Germany and Brazil, with 192 representing universities and 88 from private enterprises such as China's Unitree and Fourier Intelligence. Competing teams used robots from Chinese manufacturers such as Booster Robotics. "We come here to play and win, but we are also interested in research," said Max Polter, a member of the HTWK Robots football team from Germany, affiliated with Leipzig University of Applied Sciences. "You can test a lot of interesting new and exciting approaches in the contest. If we try something and it doesn't work, we lose the game. That's sad but it is better than investing a lot of money into a product which failed." At the robot games in Beijing, which charged 128 to 580 yuan (R313.19 to R1,419) for tickets, humanoids crashed into each other and toppled over repeatedly during football matches, while others collapsed mid-sprint during running events. During one football match, four robots crashed into each other and fell in a tangled heap. In the 1,500m running event, one robot collapsed while running at full speed, drawing gasps and cheers from spectators. Despite frequent tumbles requiring human assistance to help robots stand, many managed to right themselves independently, earning applause from audiences. Organisers said the games provide valuable data collection opportunities for developing robots for practical applications such as factory work. Football matches help train robots' coordination abilities, which could prove useful for assembly line operations requiring collaboration between many units, commentators said. China is investing billions in humanoids and robotics as the country grapples with an ageing population and growing competition with the US over advanced technologies. It has staged high-profile robotics events in recent months, including what it called the world's first humanoid robot marathon in Beijing, a robot conference and the opening of retail stores dedicated to humanoid robots. Morgan Stanley analysts in a report last week noted a surge in attendance at a recent robot conference from the general public compared to years before, saying this showed "how China, not only top government officials, has embraced the concept of embodied intelligence".
