Farmers relieved as rain returns to Marathwada

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Many parts of Marathwada reported rainfall — after a brief hiatus -- in the past 48 hours until Saturday morning, offering benefits to kharif crops.
The region received an average of 12.5mm of rainfall in the past 48-hours, taking the tally of the rainfall since June 1 to 321 mm.
Official data showed that the the monsoon deficit for Marathwada has reduced to 15% after the latest showers.
While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall in several parts of Marathwada for a few days. Beed, Hingoli, Latur, Dharashiv, Nanded and Parbhani received a yellow alert with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy winds flowing at the speed of 30-40 km per hour.
As per official data from the state agriculture department, Marathwada has over 47 lakh hectare of agricultural land under kharif sowing, of which 90% of area has witnessed sowing so far.
Patel Parvez, a farmer from Beed district, said the monsoon run during the current kharif season was satisfactory so far despite considerable pauses.
"As compared to many other parts of the state, Marathwada has received lower rainfall this season. The rain received so far have occurred after considerable gaps. This caused stress in crops at times. At present, kharif crops are growing well," he said.
The disaster management department authorities have advised the public, especially from rural areas, to avoid shelter under trees and metal roofs during the rainy season in the wake of chances of lightning in parts of Marathwada.
