Brighton's Tom McGill signs new two-year contract

New York Times08-05-2025

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Tom McGill has signed a new two-year contract.
The 25-year-old back-up has been with the club since the age of 14. He spent the first half of the campaign on loan to League Two side MK Dons, making 25 appearances before returning to understudy first choice Bart Verbruggen and No 2 Jason Steele.

'Tom has been an important part of our goalkeeping team for a long time, and we're pleased to see that continue,' head coach Fabian Hurzeler said. 'He gained some valuable experience with MK Dons this season and we're confident that Tom will continue to improve with us.'
McGill received his first call-up to the Canada senior squad in March 2023 and he was part of his country's Copa America squad last year.
His new contract until June 2027 comes after Carl Rushworth indicated he wants to leave Brighton unless his chances of game time improve. The 23-year-old returned from an injury-hit loan spell with Hull City in the Championship in the first half of the season to sit on the bench for 12 Premier League games in succession from January while Steele recovered from shoulder surgery.

NBA Team Sponsorship Revenue Hits $1.6 Billion In 2024-2025 Season

NBA franchises secured $1.62 billion in team sponsorship revenue for the 2024-25 season, an 8% uptick year-over-year. That's also a 91% increase over the past five years, according to a new report released by SponsorUnited, a sports and entertainment sponsorship intelligence and data firm. The three team sponsorship categories which grew the most year-over-year included technology ($22 million), followed by healthcare ($8.2 million) and auto ($8 million). The NBA report, which was authored by SponsorUnited's marketing, business, intelligence and analytics groups, incorporated data via its SaaS platform from September 2021 to April 2025. SponsorUnited found that jersey patch revenue contributed, in large part, to NBA teams' business success off the court in 2024-25. Patches first debuted during the 2017-18 campaign to bolster teams' sponsorship offerings to current and prospective partners. This season, there were 11 new jersey patch deals featuring six brands — such as Amica Insurance (Boston Celtics), Reviver (Sacramento Kings) and Brightside Windows (Portland Trail Blazers) — who were also first-time NBA partners. The new agreements reached over $80 million in total spending across the NBA, which will see its new media rights deals with ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock and Amazon Prime Video begin in 2025-26. Meanwhile, almost 450 brands partnered with the NBA for the first time during this recent season. Sponsorship categories that saw the most growth in terms of new brand partners included construction (37%), alcohol (35%), technology (31%), hotel, restaurant and leisure (31%) and government (30%). The Golden State Warriors' jersey patch partner, Rakuten, and naming rights sponsor, JPMorgan Chase, were the two biggest-spending brands, according to the report. AB InBev, Toyota and Bibigo, a Korean food company featured on the Los Angeles Lakers jersey, rounded out the top five spenders. Toyota is a sponsor with more than half of the league's 30 teams. Among the major U.S. men's professional sports leagues, the NBA sits in third behind the NFL and MLB, whose teams secured nearly $2.5 billion and $1.9 billion, respectively, in overall team sponsorship revenue. From a player perspective, Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Jared McCain had the most endorsement deals (30) of any NBA player, per SponsorUnited. New York Knicks forward Karl Anthony Towns (23), shooting guard Josh Hart (19) and point guard Jalen Brunson (18) were also among the top endorsed NBA athletes.

Berklee College of Music graduates create Boston's theme song for FIFA World Cup

Two recent Berklee College of Music graduates created Boston's Sonic ID, ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup. FIFA invited each of the 16 World Cup host cities in North America to create their own sound, before the eyes of the soccer world turned to them. But Boston was the only city to partner with a college to create its soundscape. Boston's FIFA theme song for World Cup Roommates Deven Kamra Lyons and Ben Zakharenko didn't know exactly what they were in for when their professor told them about an opportunity that could potentially change their lives. "The project was initially introduced to us as a remix competition that Berklee was holding," says Kamra Lyons. Zakharenko adds, "We both were like, OK let's try and apply for this opportunity and just see what happens. We both end up getting in and hearing the initial brief, and then we're like, whoa, this is a really big thing." Kareem Clarke, a member of the professor advisor team says, "From the beginning, Deven and Ben really stood out," Clarke said. "I believe they were the number one from all the options that we had picked." Another member of the advisory team, Professor Jason Petrin, agrees. "Theirs really captured everything we were looking for," Petrin said. "It had the Boston elements that FIFA put forth in the brief. The quality was there, so you know one of the big things is just the quality of the production, the quality of the writing. And theirs really stood out as sounding professional." FIFA wanted each host city to remix its official theme, adding distinct cultural aspects of the region. "There were a couple of things that we saw that they wanted that we really dialed in on," says Kamra Lyons. "One was the Celtic music influence, one was the more rock influence, and one was just getting the city of Boston to be communicated in the work." Zakharenko explains, "I focused a lot more on the acoustic elements, because a lot of our ideas for the remix involved recording flutes, recording guitars, things like that which are instruments that I play." An opportunity to change their lives For the roommates, the decision to work together was an easy one. Kamra Lyons says, "I realized that I wasn't going to be able to do everything by myself." "We were like, well, if we're going to hear what each other are working on anyway, why not just combine our efforts and do something better than either of us could do individually?" adds Zakharenko. A combined 20 to 30 hours of work went into the final winning product. Hundreds of tracks combined to create a distinctive sound. Kamra Lyons tells us, "The true nature and the true scale of this opportunity doesn't really dawn on me yet." Clarke says, "It's really a great opportunity to just see them, their music and their ideas blossom in a nice way, and being given a prompt and being able to execute on a high level is something that's really, really important." "This is why we teach here," explains Petrin. "Students get these amazing opportunities, and they get to share their music with millions of people." Zakharenko adds, "It will open a lot of doors. It already has. And I also just think it's pretty cool to say that we work with FIFA." Gillette Stadium will host seven matches, including one quarter-final, during next year's FIFA World Cup. Deven and Ben's sonic sound will be played at all of them. Click here to listen to Deven and Ben's sonic sound.
