Form teams to verify property tax assessments in Madurai: Madurai Bench of Madras HC
A bench of justices S M Subramaniam and G Arul Murugan gave the direction on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by an AIADMK councillor of the 83rd Ward of the civic body, T Ravi, seeking CBI investigation into the alleged Rs 200-crore scam in which bribes are said to have been taken to lower the valuation of properties.
During the hearing on Tuesday, additional public prosecutor T Senthil Kumar submitted that as of August 9, 15 persons including an assistant commissioner and assistant revenue officer have been arrested.
The special investigation team of police personnel is in the process of obtaining data from the director of municipal administration about the valuation of the immovable properties in Madurai city corporation limits and the investigation is being done in all angles.
Since the petitioner submitted that the undervaluation of buildings for assessing the property tax also needs to be addressed while investigating the above scam, the judges directed the corporation commissioner to constitute special teams to verify the accuracy of the property tax assessments made by the staff and officials of Madurai Corporation and thereafter take appropriate action to ensure that correct assessment of property tax is made in respect of every immovable property in Madurai city limits in accordance with the relevant legal provisions.
Additional Advocate General Veera Kathiravan said he will get necessary instructions from the commissioner, form the required number of teams and submit a report to the court in the next hearing on Wednesday (August 20).

Cash, cellphones worth Rs 20 lakh stolen
Patna: Cash and goods worth around Rs 20 lakh were stolen from a cellphone shop at Mahadev Sthan locality in Patna's Khagaul police station area around 5am on Wednesday. Thieves broke into the shop by breaking the shutter and stole around 150 mobile phones of different brands worth approximately Rs 15 lakh. They also stole Rs 5 lakh cash from the shop's cash counter. Khagaul SHO Rajkumar Singh said shop owner Sanjeet Kumar alias Rishi reported that he closed at 10pm on Tuesday and the theft was discovered at 9.30am on Wednesday. "The CCTV camera footage show a thief breaking into the shop, while five or six others kept watch outside in the early hours. Cab unions protest exclusion from meet with aggregators
Panaji: Upset about being kept out of a meeting on Goa's transportation sector, Goa's taxi unions staged a silent protest outside the transport department on Wednesday. The unions' members questioned why they were not invited to govt's meeting with Ola and Uber. Given that representatives from app-based taxi aggregators were present at the meeting, taxi union leaders suspect that govt is in talks with Ola and Uber to commence operations in Goa. Transport minister Mauvin Godinho did not deny that app-based aggregators were present at the meeting. However, he said that the meeting was convened by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and public policy consultant, Chase Advisors. 'After deliberations, let's see what recommendations come from them. All industry bodies have supported taxi aggregators. The taxi operators don't want this. They want to go back to the old system, no aggregator, make one trip and sit at home. How long can this go on?' said Godinho. He mentioned that govt would be holding a meeting with local taxi unions in the coming days. The taxi operators questioned CM Pramod Sawant's assurance in the assembly that no app-based services would be granted approval to operate in Goa. 'The transport minister said that he would take strict action against Ola and Uber if they are found operating in the state. To date, no action has been taken against them, but instead, the minister has gone and sat with them for tea,' said one of the taxi operators. They criticised govt for charging hefty fees for the installation of digital taxi meters. 'Digital meters that are available for Rs 3,500 have been installed for Rs 11,500. The minister must publicly explain why this was done. A control room was supposed to be created to monitor the taxis that had installed digital meters. Where is this control room? Govt nod to raise 1,500 crore as loan for LIFE Mission housing
Thiruvananthapuram: State cabinet on Wednesday gave in-principle approval to raise Rs 1,500 crore as a loan with govt guarantee from Hudco through KURDFC for LIFE Mission housing scheme. Of the Rs 1,500 crore, Rs 1,100 crore will be used to provide funds for 1,27,601 houses under construction and Rs 400 crore will be earmarked for housing assistance to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries in gram panchayats where they form the majority of the LIFE list. The borrowing will be spread over two years, with Rs 750 crore each in 2025-26 and 2026-27. The loan repayment will be made over 15 years by deducting from the development fund of local bodies through KURDFC, while govt will bear the annual interest from the budget. Onam gift for Scheduled Tribes: A total of 52,864 Scheduled Tribe members aged above 60 years, excluding pensioners in central, state and semi-govt institutions, will be given Rs 1,000 each as Onam gift in 2025. For this, Rs 5.28 crore will be allocated from chief minister's distress relief fund.
