Rugby-S.Africa taking it one game at a time ahead of Women's Rugby World Cup

The Stara day ago
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -South Africa head to the Women's Rugby World Cup in England this month without the same aura about them as the men's team but with renewed belief having shown rapid improvement in the last 12 months under coach Swys de Bruin.
The Springbok men have a record four World Cup titles, including the last two, with the famous green and gold jerseys entrenched in the everyday lives of many South Africans, who live and breathe every kick, pass and try.
The women's team have traditionally not enjoyed the same popularity, but under De Bruin results have picked up markedly, including a 41-24 victory against a New Zealand Black Ferns XV in Cape Town earlier this month.
South Africa are in a World Cup pool with powerhouse France, Italy and Brazil. The game against the Italians at York Community Stadium on August 31 is likely to be key with two teams advancing from Pool D to the quarter-finals.
"You see the girls and it's the biggest occasion in most of their lives," De Bruin, who has previously been part of Rassie Erasmus' coaching team with the men's Springboks, told Reuters.
"I think the last game took us to where we want to be to see what we can do. So that was the one we needed. Now it's just to get on the plane and make South Africa proud.
"We've got to focus completely on (first opponents) Brazil. We can't get ahead of ourselves. If we can make the knockout rounds, anything can happen, that's the aim."
South Africa face the Brazilians on August 24 at Franklin's Gardens in Northampton.
Babalwa Latsha, who captained the side against the Black Ferns XV and became the first female from Africa to play professionally in 2020, believes the looming World Cup will be a turning point for the women's game.
"Personally, to be part of this phenomenal squad, at what will probably be the best World Cup in women's rugby history, is a massive honour for me," she said. "It's a turning point for women's rugby as a whole.
"The success of the (men's) Springboks side is a success for us all. What they have done for rugby has been incredible and we take motivation from that. However, the Springbok women are on a unique journey."

Soccer-Rodri to make careful return as Man City look to rebound from trophy-less season

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Group G - Juventus v Manchester City - Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida, U.S. - June 26, 2025 Manchester City's Rodri celebrates after the match REUTERS/Amanda Perobelli/File Photo (Reuters) -Manchester City plan to manage midfielder Rodri's return from injury with regular but limited playing time, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The anticipated return of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, who missed almost the entire 2024-2025 season after suffering an ACL injury, has lifted City fans as they look to bury memories of last season's disappointment. City finished third in the league, ending the campaign without a trophy for the first time since 2016-17. Guardiola confirmed Rodri will travel to Wolverhampton, but defender Josko Gvardiol, midfielder Mateo Kovacic and winger Savinho are sidelined with injury, while goalkeeper Ederson is also out amid reports linking him with a move away. "Rodri is so soon to come back, and importantly, his knee is perfect. He played Juventus (at the Club World Cup in June) and then had to be out with injury for six weeks. We'll try to avoid that," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "Now he needs to bring in the minutes in training sessions and especially a few minutes in the games. Because what we want for him is not to come back and step back and come back and step back again... That would not be good. "In this dynamic you can't get rhythm. And the competition? It is so demanding. He has had good training and tomorrow he's travelling. We will decide how many minutes. If not, then hopefully he can play minutes in next games." City are without Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker, who joined Napoli and Burnley respectively after their contracts expired, while Jack Grealish was loaned to Everton after falling out of favour with Guardiola. Brazilians Ederson and Savinho have been linked with transfers, though Guardiola said the goalkeeper, whose contract expires next year, has not asked to leave. "I don't know how many (will leave) but I know the market in Saudi Arabia runs a little bit longer... All the managers like to work with the right number of players because they deserve to play all the players," Guardiola said. "If any club want a player (they) should call the club, like we do... The only thing I'm concerned about today is that Savinho will be with us ... hopefully for many, many years, at 21-years-old with the potential he has. "But at the end, as always, the desire of the player prevails above everything, and after that there has to be an agreement with the club." Athletics-Start-up Grand Slam Track struggling to compensate athletes

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images/File Photo NEW YORK (Reuters) -Grand Slam Track is struggling to compensate its athletes after pulling its final meet of the year in Los Angeles, CEO Michael Johnson said on Friday, adding that the start-up did not receive funding that had been committed to it. The track circuit lured in top talent with promises of massive paydays in its debut year but was forced to cancel the fourth and final meet on the calendar after trimming back another event in Philadelphia from three to two days. Last month, Front Office Sports reported that Grand Slam Track owed around $13 million to athletes who had participated. "It is incredibly difficult to live with the reality that you've built something bigger than yourself while simultaneously feeling like you've let down the very people you set out to help," Johnson said in a statement. "We promised that athletes would be fairly and quickly compensated. Yet, here we are struggling with our ability to compensate them." The four-time Olympic gold medallist said the start-up was unable to meet dated payment timelines after it did not receive funding committed to it: "We saw circumstances change in ways beyond our control." Despite this, Johnson said Grand Slam Track has no plans to shut down and would move forward with a 2026 season after its athletes have been paid. The 21-year-old all-rounder has represented England in 29 matches across all formats and will lead the team in the absence of the regular test players, who have been rested for the three-match series in Dublin, the ECB said on Friday. 'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England selector Luke Wright said in a statement. The series in Ireland will kick off after England's tour of South Africa for three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three T20 matches, starting September 2. Right-arm fast bowler Sonny Baker has earned his first national team call-up for the ODIs against South Africa after the 22-year-old impressed selectors with his performance for England Lions and in domestic cricket. England will travel to New Zealand in October for a white-ball tour, followed by five tests in Australia from November.
