Welcome to the Week in Review: a Monday feature that looks back at the week that was for the San Antonio Spurs, takes a look at the week ahead, and more. Enjoy!
Week 23: The Spurs went winless against a tough schedule featuring four playoff-bound teams, beginning with a blowout loss in Detroit as their league-leading March offense came back to earth and ending with a horrific showing at home against the Warriors, where they gave up a season-high 148 points. It between those games, they put up two admirable showings against the East's two leaders, making both the Cavs and Celtics work until the buzzer for their victories.
Week 24: 1-3 (32-46, 13th in West)
105-116 loss vs. Orlando Magic (rescheduled)
Recap: In a game where the Spurs should have had a rare rest night but instead were making a up a rescheduled game, they looked much better than the Warriors game and even led by double-figures late in the third quarter, but mistakes took over from there, and the Magic and their 2nd ranked defense inserted their will to pull away in the fourth quarter.

What we learned
113-106 win at Denver Nuggets
Recap: Aided by the Nuggets resting their entire starting lineup after a 2OT loss the night before, the similarly shorthanded Spurs — who added Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson to their injury list — used their depth, with seven players scored in double figures, to outlast Denver, leading most of the way despite being on a SEGABABA themselves. (The Spurs sure do love to play April spoilers for the Nuggets.)
What we learned
113-114 loss vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
Recap: After a rough first half in which the Cavs couldn't miss from three and the Spurs were down by as much as 23, they came roaring back in the second half. Led by the two 'Uncs' of the roster, they went on a huge 14-2 run in the final minutes to get within a point and had a chance to steal a win at the buzzer. Unfortunately, Harrison Barnes' floater bounced off the back iron for the heartbreaking loss, but it was still an admirable effort.

What we learned
109-120 loss at Portland Trail Blazers
Recap: As has often been the case this season, a slow start against the severely shorthanded Trail Blazers put the Spurs in too deep of a whole to dig out of. While they fought back and got close several times, they could never quite get out of their own way and over the hump (for example, the Blazers got three buckets off their own makes when the Spurs turned over the inbound pass). The loss officially eliminated the Spurs from play-in contention.

Power Rankings
John Schuhmann, NBA.com — 23 (last week: 23)
OffRtg: 113.4 (18) DefRtg: 116.2 (25) NetRtg: -2.8 (22) Pace: 100.1 (13)
It was a tough season in San Antonio, with coach Gregg Popovich suffering a stroke in November and Victor Wembanyama's season being cut short at the All-Star break by deep vein thrombosis. The Spurs' playoff drought has reached six years (second-longest active drought), but they've been the league's sixth most improved team regarding winning percentage and seventh most improved statistically (+3.6 points per 100 possessions). They were 21-25 in the games that Wembanyama played after going 19-52 with him in uniform last season.
One takeaway
With Wembanyama out for the last seven weeks and De'Aaron Fox also getting shut down in mid-March, the focus has been on the development of Stephon Castle. Three-point shooting (28.3%) has been an issue for the rookie all season, but he's been attacking more since the break (15.2 drives per 36 minutes) than he did prior (10.9 per 36) and ranks 13th in free throw rate (33.4 attempts per 100 shots from the field) among 92 players 6-6 or shorter with at least 500 field goal attempts. If the perimeter shot (and finishing in the paint) improves in the next few years, Castle will be very tough to defend.
What to watch for this summer
Three of the league's biggest summer storylines will originate from San Antonio. There's the continued recovery of Popovich and Wembanyama, along with the future of Chris Paul (one of the best point guards in NBA history). If the Spurs stay where they are (eighth) in the upside-down standings, they'll have a 26% chance at another top-four pick. It's more likely that they land at No. 8 or 9 in the Draft, with the Hawks' pick (likely No. 10-16) also coming their way.
Brett Siegel, Clutch Points — 23 (last week: 24)
Not much has gone right for the San Antonio Spurs this season, with their stars being out and Gregg Popovich suffering his mild stroke near the start of the year. The good news is that Stephon Castle appears to be in line to win the Rookie of the Year award, marking the second straight season that this organization has had the best first-year player in the NBA. Could the Spurs do it again and hit the nail on the head with their spot in the NBA Draft Lottery?
Coming up: Tues. 4/8 at Los Angeles Clippers; Wed. 4/9 at Golden State Warriors; Fri. 4/11 at Phoenix Suns; Sun 4/13 vs. Toronto Raptors

Prediction: 2-2 — It's the end of the season, so why not dream 'big'? I wholeheartedly believe the Spurs will win their season finale at home against a Raptors team they thoroughly beat just a few weeks ago, and Phoenix, who is two games behind the Mavs for the 10th seed with four games remaining, could very well be checked out and playing for nothing by the time the Spurs arrive. As for the two games before that? The Clippers and Warriors are in the battle of their lives for the playoffs, currently sitting in the 5th and 6th seeds respectively but in a four-way tie record-wise for 5th-8th, so every single game matters. The odds are slim they'll blow home games to the shorthanded Spurs with so much at stake.

Celtics Given Big Update on Kristaps Porzingis Future

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics are in a strange place as the NBA offseason gets started. Boston has one of the best rosters in the entire league, but due to heavy financial problems, the Celtics are likely to break up the core. Many insiders around the NBA believe that the Celtics will look to shed salary this summer, and it could cause major hits to the roster. Star center Kristaps Porzingis and guard Jrue Holiday are among the biggest names being talked about, and it could see them both be moved. More NBA news: Celtics' Jrue Holiday Gets Big Update Amid Trade Rumors Holiday still has three years left on his deal, and due to his age, his contract could be tough to move. But Porzingis may be easier, and the Celtics could elect to move the All-Star big man. However, according to NBA contributor Evan Sidery of Forbes, there is a thought around the league that Boston will need to increase draft capital to part with Porzingis. The star center is owed $30.7 million next year, but is on an expiring deal. The prevailing thought among league executives is the Celtics will need to include draft capital in a trade offloading Kristaps Porzingis' $30.7 million expiring contract. Boston is very open to moving Porzingis as their top goal will be to dodge the second apron this offseason. — Evan Sidery (@esidery) June 9, 2025 If the Celtics do have to move extra draft capital to move Porzingis, it could limit any potential trades. Even on an expiring deal, Porzingis may be seen as a negative asset. More NBA news: Rockets, Spurs Linked to Draft Trade Amid Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant Rumors When he is healthy, Porzingis is among the best centers in the NBA. But his inability to stay on the court has cost the Celtics, and opposing teams could be wary of trading for him. Last season, Porzingis was limited to jsut 42 games during the regular season. However, Porzingis averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 41.2 percent from beyond the 3-point line in those games. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - JUNE 09: Kristaps Porzingis #8 of the Boston Celtics looks on during the first quarter against the Dallas Mavericks in Game Two of the 2024 NBA Finals at TD Garden on June 09, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. Porzingis has suffered a major injury in his leg. MoreBut in the playoffs, his availability hindered the Celtics once again. The big man missed time due to a mysterious illness, and he was hardly effective for Boston. The Celtics likely don't want to give up on Porzingis, but his injury history remains concerning. Boston has to avoid going over the second apron tax line again this season, and it could cause a star like Porzingis to be traded. Rays' Wander Franco charged for illegal gun possession amid sexual abuse trial

The post Rays' Wander Franco charged for illegal gun possession amid sexual abuse trial appeared first on ClutchPoints. Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who was placed on administrative leave in August of 2023 before being moved to the restricted list last July, is now officially facing another legal case. He is currently standing trial in his native Dominican Republic for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking. If convicted, Franco could serve up to 30 years in prison. Prosecutors are also charging him for a separate arrest that took place in November. As of Sunday, the former All-Star is accused of illegal possession of a handgun, via ESPN. The alleged crime is said to have taken place in a parking lot altercation in San Juan de la Maguana. Police found the firearm, which is registered in the name of Franco's uncle, in the 24-year-old's vehicle and arrested him. His attorneys claim that there is no legal issue since the gun is licensed. He could find himself back in court at a future date. Franco is already facing extremely serious charges as we speak. Prosecutors state that he 'kidnapped' a then-14-year-old girl for 'sexual purposes' and paid the minor's mother thousands of dollars in order to gain her consent. They claimed to have conclusive evidence against the athlete before his trial started on June 2. The Rays signed Wander Franco to an 11-year, $182 million deal in 2021, which remains the biggest contract they have ever committed to a player. Obviously, they considered him to be a transformative talent who could lead the franchise through the 2020s. Because he is on the restricted list, Tampa Bay is not presently on the hook for its investment. Prosecutors intend to take Franco to trial for his gun charge. His current trial continues in Puerto Plata. He maintains his innocence and called for justice before the proceedings began. Apparently, there is a possibility the public has to wait approximately eight months for a verdict. Knicks Suggested to Hire Head Coach ‘Responsible For Building' Warriors

Knicks Suggested to Hire Head Coach 'Responsible For Building' Warriors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau was fired after five seasons with the organization, fresh off leading the club to its first Eastern Conference Finals in 25 seasons. Advertisement This leaves pressure on the front office to make a home run of a hire. Instead of giving Thibodeau another season with this squad, to see if he could take them further, they decided they need someone they are confident can take them to the promised land. Jason Kidd, Ime Udoka and Chris Finch -- all three active coaches -- have been linked to the vacancy early in the process. They've all got conference finals experience, with Udoka and Kidd both coaching in the NBA Finals in the past few years. Stephen A. Smith, ESPN pundit and known Knicks superfan, had a clear head coaching suggestion for New York. He wants the team to consider hiring Mark Jackson, a former head coach of the Golden State Warriors. © Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports "I'm gonna always mention the name Mark man was responsible for building Golden State before Steve Kerr was brought in and took over and piggybacked off of that," Smith explained. The logic is interesting here. Did Jackson do a solid job with the Warriors before the dynasty? Absolutely. He won 23 games in year one before winning 51 games in year three. Advertisement In the final two years of his three-year stint, he coached in the playoffs, with a total record of 9-10 in postseason play. However, there was a reason Steve Kerr was brought in to architect the dynasty years. He found success in the playoffs. Of course, Jackson was early to the party, and Kerr struck at the right time -- as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green were entering their prime years. The New York native being linked to the Knicks makes sense. He's got limited coaching experience, though. While he is attached to the Warriors' dynasty, New York might opt to aim for a bench boss with more experience -- particularly deep in the playoffs. Advertisement Led by Jalen Brunson, the Knicks' title window is seemingly open. New York needs to strike while they can, taking no chances to bolster their ability to raise a banner.
