Bale part of group to have Cardiff City takeover bid rejected

BBC News3 hours ago

Former Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale was part of a bid launched in May to buy hometown club Cardiff City. The 35-year-old former Wales captain, who retired from playing in January 2023, is understood to have been part of a group that made direct contact with Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan with a proposal to take a controlling share at the League One club. The offer was rejected, with the Malaysian businessman thought to have little interest in selling at the moment. However, interest in buying the Bluebirds is understood to still be high and the assumption is that the group will try again.Cardiff are not commenting on the reports that emerged late on Friday afternoon concerning a bid for the club newly relegated from the Championship. But it is understood the proposal did not reach boardroom discussion stage.Bale - who won the Champions League five times with Real Madrid - had been linked with a move to Cardiff as a player in the build-up to the 2022 World Cup, before opting to join Major League Soccer side (MLS) side Los Angeles FC.It was reported earlier in June that Bale was part of a US-based consortium's attempt to take over Cardiff's fellow League One club Plymouth Argyle.

Charles shares affectionate moment with Duchess of York as race win hopes dashed

The King shared an affectionate moment with Sarah, Duchess of York during a day his hopes of a Royal Ascot winner were dashed. Charles kissed Sarah's hand when the pair met in the famous racecourse's parade ring, as the duchess' daughter Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank watched. The King has known Sarah for decades but she appeared out of the royal fold until invited to spend Christmas Day with the King and Queen at Sandringham in 2023. Among the famous racegoers was Harry Potter author JK Rowling who was spotted in a box at the grounds with her husband Neil Murray, former defence secretary Ben Wallace and the King's niece Zara Tindall. On the track the King and Queen's racing pot of gold failed to materialise when their horse Purple Rainbow was well beaten in the aptly named Sandringham Stakes. The royal couple watched the fast-paced race from the royal box and were glued to monitors, with the King animated in the closing stages of the mile-long sprint. He bobbed on the spot as if willing on his jockey Warren Fentiman but Purple Rainbow, who was not fancied by the bookies, did not challenge the front runners. The couple looked up in the closing stages to watch the race as it came past the stands but Never Let Go crossed the line first and the King and his wife were left opened-mouthed. The touching greeting between the King and his former sister-in-law, who still remains close to ex-husband the Duke of York, may be in part due to their cancer journeys. The head of state is receiving ongoing cancer care while Sarah has spoken publicly about her own treatment for skin and breast cancer, undergoing a mastectomy. At the start of the day racegoers were given a respite from this week's sweltering conditions but the hazy cloud over the Berkshire racecourse burned away by late afternoon pushing up temperatures. Staff were handing out free bottles of water and Will Aitkenhead, head of corporate and industry affairs at the track, said they had worked hard overnight to provide more shaded areas. The King and Queen were joined in the royal box by Camilla's old school friend Lady Cavendish and her husband Lord Cavendish, the former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad, the Queen's Companion the Marchioness of Lansdowne and musical maestro Lord Lloyd-Webber. Charles and Camilla will have another chance at racing success – after two of their horses were well beaten earlier this week – when The King's Falcon runs in the Golden Gate Stakes, during Royal Ascot's final day on Saturday. The late Queen was a passionate owner and breeder of thoroughbreds and had more than 20 Royal Ascot winners during her 70-year reign. Charles and Camilla have taken on her stable of horses and enjoyed their first Royal Ascot winner in 2023 when their horse Desert Hero triumphed in the King George V Stakes. Royal Ascot is as much a social occasion as a sporting event and towards the end of the day an online video emerged of two men apparently fighting at the grounds where tens of thousands had enjoyed the day without incident.

Gareth Bale consortium in bid to buy Cardiff

The 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was understood to be part of a consortium that had conversations regarding a takeover of Plymouth earlier this week, along with several other clubs, but it appears they have now turned their attention to south Wales. The Athletic reports that the consortium sent current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan a letter of intent last month, which included financial figures, but it was rejected. Bale is seeking to be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. His former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor in and co-owner of Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Cardiff declined to comment on Friday night. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. He was linked with an emotional move to Cardiff, his hometown club, after leaving Madrid in 2022 but instead joined MLS side LAFC. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020. Cardiff were relegated to League One last season and appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as their new manager this week.

Former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll ‘returning home' to England early as Bordeaux pay gushing tribute to striker who earned just €2,500-a-month

Former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has left Bordeaux after one season as he looks to 'return home' to England to be closer to his children. The 36-year-old was a fan favourite in his single campaign at the club after dropping down the divisions and taking a huge pay cut, even revealing that he was losing money by playing for them. Carroll scored 11 goals in 23 matches last season as Bordeaux finished fourth in the National 2, France's fourth divison. It was second season in France having netted four times in 35 appearances for second tier Amiens the previous season. Bordeaux on Friday confirmed the former England international had departed to 'return home' and be closer to his five children. The six-time Ligue 1 champions issued a gushing statement thanking him for his 'generous personality' and for 'showing total commitment'. 'FC Girondins de Bordeaux would like to warmly thank Andy Carroll for his time at the club this season,' they said. 'Having arrived last summer with a desire to take on a new challenge, Andy did not hesitate to join the Gironde to try the Bordeaux adventure, showing total commitment from his first days. 'On the pitch, the English striker scored 11 goals in 21 league matches. But beyond the statistics, Andy brought his experience, physical impact, and professionalism to his role on a daily basis, both in the locker room and during important matches. Off the pitch, he is an exceptional and generous personality that the Club's fans and employees have enjoyed working alongside. 'Today, to be closer to his children, Andy has chosen to return home. We fully understand and respect this personal decision. 'Thanks for everything, Andy. You'll always be home here. Safe travels and see you soon!' Carroll responded with a simple message to the club's Twitter account, writing 'Je t'aime [I love you]'. The forward's next move is uncertain but is unlikely to retire after admitting that he would like to continue playing into his 40s. Bordeaux are one of France's most succesful teams, last winning Ligue 1 in 2009, and boast a 42,000-seater stadium. Carroll made nine appearances for England and scored in the 2012 Euros against Sweden But they were forced down the divisions due to severe financial struggles. They were relegated from Ligue 1 in the 2021/22 season before being banished to the fourth division last year, after filing for administration and losing their professional licence. Carroll was said to earn less than €2,500 (£2,140) a month at the cash strapped club - a far cry from the £80,000-a-week he raked it at Anfield. 'I'm actually spending more money to be at Bordeaux than I am earning, basically,' Carroll told The Athletic in October. 'My rent is more than what I'm taking in. That's before eating, driving, flying. It was the same at Reading, where my apartment was more than my wages. I don't care about the money.' The ex-Liverpool star started his career at Newcastle before earning a £35m switch to the Reds in 2011. He played for England nine times, scoring at the 2012 Euros. The forward revealed that he was losing money by playing for Bordeaux during his time there The striker had spells at West Ham, West Brom, Reading and returned to Newcastle before moving to Amiens in September 2023. Carroll had three children with ex-partner Billi Mucklow during an 11 year relationship with the former The Only Way Is Essex star. The 36-year-old also has two children from a past relationship.
