JBPM Records 76 Fire Cases In School Areas This Year
Its director-general, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said that 60 per cent of the total cases were identified as being caused by electrical-related factors.
"Whether due to wiring, the use of electrical equipment or 'resistance' to the electricity supply, these three elements contributed to approximately 60 per cent of the causes.
'We did not catergorise fire incidents as happening in classrooms, laboratories, stores or others. But we categorised them as the entire school area,' he told reporters after the JBPM's 'National Firefighter Drill 2025' closing ceremony at the parade ground, Fire and Rescue Academy (Eastern Region) in Wakaf Tapai near here today
In another development, Nor Hisham said the fire department had begun moving heavy machinery into locations of four current wildfires in Sarawak.
He said the entry of the heavy machinery was to enable 'cutting' of the fire line to be carried out to control the rapidly spreading fires.
'Our concern is that if the hot days continue, there will be a descent (of fires) into the peatland areas. So, we have to prepare ourselves to carry out a total flooding,' he said.
He said the fire department also received assistance from various parties who were working together to control the fires, such as large companies that have land in the affected areas.
A spokesperson for the Sarawak JBPM Operations Centre today announced that wildfires were still reported to be occurring in four locations in the state, involving a total area of more than 88 hectares.

Visitors at beaches and campgrounds should exercise caution and evacuate in advance, if needed," a local government official said. Last month, South Korea was hit by heavy rains and landslides, which took 23 lives and left five others unaccounted for nationwide. As the rain moves in, heat wave advisories are expected to be gradually lifted or eased. Forest fire near Felda Sungai Buaya in Rawang chars area the size of 34 football fields
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — A forest fire broke out along Jalan Kiambang Sari 1 near Felda Sungai Buaya in Rawang yesterday, affecting approximately 24.28 hectares of land — roughly the size of 34 football fields. According to Berita Harian, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received an emergency call at 6.36pm, and the first fire engine arrived at the scene at 6.47pm. The operation was led by the Bukit Sentosa Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the Rawang station. 'As of 7am today, firefighters had successfully extinguished 23.47 hectares of the blaze, with about 0.80 hectares still burning. 'Firefighting efforts are ongoing,' the department said.

Kuala Nerus relocates 100 graves at risk from coastal erosion
KUALA NERUS: The phased relocation of 100 graves at the Pengkalan Maras Muslim cemetery in Batu Rakit begins today, following severe coastal erosion that threatens to wash away numerous burial sites. Terengganu Mufti Datuk Dr Mohamad Sabri Haron said the relocation, approved by the Mufti's Office and carried out by the Kuala Nerus Islamic Affairs Department with support from the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM), the Kuala Nerus District Office, local village committees and residents, is essential to prevent greater problems. The graves will be moved to the new Hajar Muslim cemetery at Kampung Gong Awang Lib, approximately two kilometres inland, with efforts prioritised to complete the transfer before the upcoming monsoon season worsens the erosion. This action follows a November 2024 incident where the remains of five deceased, including three still wrapped in shrouds, were swept away by waves, forcing emergency reburials at Pengkalan Maras. Local residents welcomed the move, expressing relief and gratitude. Norhayati Sulaiman, 51, who feared visiting her father's grave located just two metres from the shoreline, described the relocation as a resolution to her long-standing worries. Meanwhile, Laila Othman, 57, found emotional comfort attending the transfer of her late husband's grave.
