A 4-day workweek could boost productivity and wellbeing, says economist. But why won't we try it?

Time of India4 days ago
In a world still recovering from the psychological whiplash of the pandemic, the dream of a better
work-life balance
no longer feels like a utopia — it feels necessary.
Juliet Schor
, a Boston College economist and sociologist, has been advocating this shift for decades. Her latest work as lead researcher with 4 Day Week, a global initiative studying the impact of
reduced working hours
, suggests the idea may finally be catching on.
Speaking to CNBC Make It, Schor recounted how her 1992 bestseller The Overworked American first sparked debate about overemployment. But it wasn't until COVID-19 forced a radical reevaluation of daily life that serious momentum began building. 'People realized it was more important to be living the life they wanted… not one of overworking, stress, and burnout,' she said.

The 4-Day Formula: Less Stress, More Success
So what happens when companies trim the workweek to four days — without slashing pay? According to Schor's latest book Four Days a Week, which compiles insights from pilots across 245 organizations and 8,700+ employees globally, the results are not just promising — they're transformational.
Participants in the pilot reported better work-life balance, less stress, and improved mental and physical health. 'The big jump in self-reported productivity is striking,' Schor told CNBC Make It. 'People feel more on top of their work and their lives. They're not coming into Mondays drained — they're eager, focused, and satisfied.'
Even employers had reasons to cheer: productivity stayed stable or even rose, profits ticked upward, and employee turnover practically vanished.

So Why Isn't Everyone Doing It?
Despite the evidence, the five-day workweek remains stubbornly intact in most companies. Schor attributes this resistance to one key issue: control.
'Giving people more time back feels like a loss of control to some managements,' she explains. 'It's not about performance — it's about power.'
Add to that the fear of being seen as radical or deviating from the norm, and many businesses choose to stick with the status quo. However, Fridays, once sacrosanct, are already evolving. As Schor notes, most companies informally allow for 'Summer Fridays' or shorter hours at week's end. The four-day shift may simply be formalizing what's already happening.
Will AI Do What Policy Can't?
Enter Bill Gates — tech visionary and co-founder of Microsoft — who recently made waves on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon by predicting a two-day workweek within a decade, driven by the explosive rise of artificial intelligence.

Gates believes AI will soon be able to perform the bulk of tasks currently handled by humans. 'It's kind of profound,' he said. 'It brings so much change.' That change, he imagines, could free up time for creativity, caregiving, and rest — if managed ethically.
Schor echoes this possibility, suggesting that AI-induced productivity gains could justify shorter hours without sacrificing pay. 'We can either lay off people en masse or reduce hours per job,' she says. 'Giving people more free time, while preserving income, is the smarter path.'
Between burnout metrics that remain stubbornly high and rapid technological shifts, the traditional workweek may be on its last legs. But what replaces it — and who benefits — remains the central debate.
The vision is tantalizing: a world where AI supports rather than supplants, where a four-day week is the norm, not the exception, and where people work to live, not live to work.
As Juliet Schor reminds us, 'We're already on this path. The question now is, how fast can we walk it?'

India's revenue foregone in first year of trade pact with UK estimated at Rs 4,060 cr: GTRI

India is expected to forego customs revenue of Rs 4,060 crore in the first year of the free trade agreement with the UK, as tariffs are reduced or eliminated on a wide range of goods, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative ( GTRI ) said on Monday. The calculation is based on the current import figures from the UK. India imported USD 8.6 billion worth of goods from the UK in 2024-25. Live Events Industrial products make up the bulk of these imports and face a weighted average tariff of 9.2 per cent. Most agricultural products, subject to much higher average tariffs of 64.3 per cent, were excluded from tariff cuts, except for items like whisky and gin. It said that India has committed to eliminating tariffs on 64 per cent of the value of imports from the UK immediately as the implantation starts. Overall, India will eliminate tariffs on 85 per cent of tariff lines and reduce tariff on 5 per cent of tariff lines or product categories. "Based on these factors, India's revenue foregone in the first year of the agreement is estimated at Rs 4,060 crore," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. He added that the UK imported USD 14.5 billion worth of goods from India in the last fiscal year, with a weighted average import tariff of 3.3 per cent. Under the comprehensive economic and trade agreement (CETA), the UK has agreed to eliminate tariffs on 99 per cent of Indian imports. "This translates to an estimated annual revenue loss of British Pound 375 million (or USD 474 million or Rs 3,884 crore) for the UK, again based on FY2025 trade data. As Indian exports to the UK expand, the fiscal impact is likely to grow over time," it said. The implementation of the pact may take about a year as it requires approval from the UK parliament.

TCS stock on verge to break this 16-year-old trend; can crash another 16%

TCS stock slipped 1.7 per cent to a low of ₹3,082 in intra-day trade on Monday, a day after the company said it would l ay-off 2 per cent or 12,260 employees of its global workforce. The job cuts by India's largest IT services company highlights the extent of challenges faced by technology-sector amid a sluggish global economy, geopolitical tensions and tariff concerns. Globally, Microsoft, IBM, Intel and Meta too have reduced head counts in the calendar year 2025 thus far. READ MORE On the earnings front, earlier this month, TCS reported a 6 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in net profit at ₹12,760 crore for Q1FY26 as against ₹12,040 crore in Q1FY25. Revenue from operations increased by 1.3 per cent YoY to ₹63,437 crore. Post the earnings announcement, TCS management remained optimistic overall, but admitted that high single-digit growth in FY26 looks tough. TCS stock performance thus far in 2025 TCS stock has been an under-performer so far in the calendar year 2025. The stock has dropped 22 per cent in the first seven months of the year, slightly more than the sectoral Nifty IT index - which has declined 18.3 per cent. In comparison, the NSE Nifty 50 has gained nearly 5 per cent in the same period. ALSO READ | Will Nifty end July above or below 25,000? These 3 key factors to set trend In July alone, the stock has declined over 10 per cent; while the Nifty IT has shed 9 per cent, and the Nifty 50 index was down around 3 per cent. Technical outlook on TCS stock Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Current Price: ₹3,092 Likely Target: ₹2,590 Downside Risk: 16.2% Support: ₹3,100; ₹2,900; ₹2,750 Resistance: ₹3,212; ₹3,388 Following a sharp fall at the counter, TCS stock is now on verge of breaking a key 16-year bullish trend, as per the monthly scale. Historical chart shows that TCS stock has consistently traded above its super trend line support on the monthly scale since the breakout in July 2009. Even during the Covid-19 related panic sell-off, the stock briefly dipped below this key long-term trend line support, but eventually managed to close above the same on a monthly closing basis in March 2020. Today, July 28, 2025, for the first time since March 2020, TCS is once again trading below the monthly trend line support, which stands at ₹3,121. A monthly close below the same shall signal the end of the 16-year bullish run for the stock. The monthly chart further stocks presence of some support around ₹3,100 levels, which is the lower-end of the Bollinger Bands. Break and sustained trade below the same can accentuate the fall at the counter. The next key support for TCS, as per the monthly chart, stands around ₹2,590 levels - the 100-Month Moving Average (100-MMA). This implies a downside risk of around 16.2 per cent from present levels. Intermediate support for the stock can be anticipated around ₹2,900 and ₹2,750 levels. TCS stock is seen trading below the key moving averages on the daily and weekly charts; thus indicating presence of multiple overhead resistances. The near-term bias is likely to remain bearish as long as the stock trades below 3,212 levels; while the key medium-term hurdle stands at 3,388 levels.
