What is a tsunami?
TSUNAMIS are waves triggered by earthquakes, underwater volcanic eruptions and submarine landslides.
After an underwater earthquake, the seafloor rises and drops, which lifts water up and down. The energy from this pushes sea water that transfers to waves.
Many people think of tsunamis as one wave - but they are typically multiple waves that hit the shore like a fast-rising tide.
Many tsunamis are small and don't cause damage, but others can cause massive destruction.
In 2004, a 9.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia - causing waves that levelled remote villages, ports and tourist resorts along the Indian Ocean across Southeast and South Asia.

Irish households must shut windows for next 6 weeks or risk chaos

Irish households are being urged to keep their windows firmly shut for the next six weeks - and not just to block out the worsening weather, but to stop some unwanted visitors. After a stretch of heatwave conditions, Met Eireann says a major shift is coming, with unsettled, cooler and wetter weather expected from next week. But the damp evenings also mark the return of something else. Spider season is officially upon us, with these eight-legged, eight-eyed creatures making their way into Irish homes from mid-August until early October. As temperatures begin to drop, spiders become far more visible as they head inside Irish homes in search of warmth and breeding partners ahead of the winter months. Male spiders roam around the house in search of females, while female spiders usually stay in one spot and wait for males to find them. So if you spot one darting across the floor, it's almost certainly a male on the move. Spiders are experts at finding their way in. They can squeeze through tiny cracks in brickwork, gaps under doors or poorly sealed windows. And even if your home is well-sealed, there's still one weak point. Open windows are an open invitation for spiders, who can scale the side of your house and enter through them. With the weather still mild enough to tempt people to leave windows ajar, it's effectively an invitation for spiders to come inside. They also move around at night, so a window left open after dark for fresh air is a great opportunity for a spider to get in. The problem isn't just the shock of finding one or two on the walls - many common spider species lay around 100 eggs at a time and that's the real chaos households face if they don't keep their windows shut. Experts say the best way to prevent this is to simply close your windows 'at all times', day and night, until spider season passes. You will start to see more spiders coming into the home from mid August (Image: Getty) If you do get a spider, it's not the end of the world. While arachnophobia is the second most common phobia in Ireland, spiders are actually beneficial for your house. There are many different species of spiders in Ireland but most are not considered dangerous. Giant house spiders, measuring around 120mm, and common house spiders are the two most often spotted in Irish homes. They rarely bite and pose little threat to humans or pets. In fact, spiders are useful house guests. They gobble up flies and other insects, keeping it free of almost everything else. Ireland's leading pest control provider Rentokil has warned that many common spider species lay around 100 eggs at a time, which may be fixed to an indoor surface or hidden in a spider web. Spotting one of these could mean a larger infestation is on the way. Rentokil's top tips to prevent a spider infestations include: Vacuum regularly, high and low - particularly sheltered spots such as beneath worktops, backs of cupboards or under/behind large furniture. Remove noticeable webs - on a regular basis. Fill in gaps - in walls, around pipework and under doors to deter entry. Remove sheltering sites - like firewood piles, garden bags, compost piles and general clutter from near your property. Deter all insects - use lighting in a way that is less attractive to the insects (flies) that spiders feed on. A Rentokil spokesperson explained: "As the warm weather comes to end, you are more likely to see spiders indoors due to a variety factors, including the need to seek food and shelter. Insects, spider's main food source, also retreat indoors at this time of year, so while the presence of spiders may be unpleasant, they are also providing you with a form of free pest control. "House spiders actually have a generally positive impact on a household environment, as they eat other insects. However, if their presence is particularly unpleasant for some householders, the most effective way to control spiders is to limit their food sources and disturb potential hiding spots by cleaning." The UK beaches with the warmest seawater in Britain

Plus, find out the temperature of sea water that's actually pleasant to swim in - and the apps that can help you out SEA SWIMS The UK beaches with the warmest seawater in Britain WHEN summer temperatures soar, lots of Brits will flock to the beach, but dipping your toe into the sea is another story. The waters can still be chilly even though the sun is blazing, so where in the UK is actually warmest to swim? 4 The coastline in Essex also boasts some of the warmest waters for swimming Credit: Getty Win one of 8 incredible holidays to the Caribbean, Mexico and Greece by voting in The Sun's Travel Awards - enter to win here The temperature of the sea around the UK can vary significantly, with lows in the winter of 6C to highs of 20C in summer. Of course, tTwind, ocean currents and depth. Sea temperatures near the coast will be at their highest when there are clear, sunny skies with low winds - these factors allow the water to warm up quickly. The further you go in, the temperature will begin to drop as the depth increases. Generally, the south and west coasts of the UK will have the warmest sea waters, and this year, they are warmer than usual. In July 2025, the Met Office revealed that the waters to the south of the UK are experiencing a marine heatwave. Sea surface temperatures in the Celtic Sea, English Channel, and Southern North Sea are 1.5C to 3C above 1982-2012 average. The marine heatwave is predicted to last until the end of August. A recent BBC study also revealed that the surface temperature of UK waters has risen by 0.2C, from the start of the year up until the end of July in 2025. The English seaside town with no arcades or rides but named the best in the UK 4 Clacton-on-Sea and beaches along the Essex coast also have warm sea waters 4 Essex can be hotter because of its dry and sunny weather, and proximity to the European continent Credit: Alamy The two beaches that have the warmest waters are along the Channel coast, in Camber Sands and Hastings. The beaches along the southern coast of England tends to be warmer than Essex, especially in the winter months, due to its more southerly location. Both coastlines are influenced by the Gulf Stream - which is a powerful warm ocean current that carries heat from the tropics towards the North Atlantic. However, some of the warmest waters actually surround Essex including beaches like Clacton-on-Sea and those near Mersea Island. In the summertime, the Essex coast is warmer than most of the UK because of its proximity to mainland Europe. The drier and sunnier conditions that come with that causes water temperatures to rise. According to the current water temperature in Clacton-on-Sea, it's 18.7C. The data further reveals that the warmest sea temperatures today are in Thorpeness, Sizewell, Parkeston, Walton-on-the-Naze and Manningtree - which are all along the east coast of England and sit at 19C. Meanwhile in Sandwick, Scotland, sea temperatures are as low as 11.9C. While 19C does sound warm, it can still be a shock for your body, so be mindful before you dive in headfirst. A guide by The Outdoor Swimming Society has rankings of what various water temperatures mean - and how prepared for cold waters you should be. 0-6C is considered 'baltic', you'll need a wetsuit and it's unlikely you'll swim too far because it's so cold. 6-11C is 'freezing', still cold but a more manageable temperature. 12-16C is 'fresh' and quite enjoyable for open water lovers. 17-20C is considered 'summer swimming' and this will be the temperature of lakes and rivers rather than the sea itself. 21C is 'warm' and 30C is 'pool temperature'. When taking children to the beach, be aware that they are less tolerant of cold water than adults and struggle to regulate body temperature more. 4 Take care before swimming by looking up the temperature of the water Credit: Alamy So it's safer for them to stick to paddling and splashing in the shallows than swimming further out. You can check the temperature of the sea with apps like Magic Seaweed, Windy, Seaside Buoy and Sea Water Temperature. It's also worth considering taking a look at the quality of the waters before diving in. Here you can find out the 93 cleanest beaches in England and Wales where you can swim without worrying about sewage. Plus, here's the world's 50 best beaches, and two are in England.
