Atlanta Braves Make Major Coaching Move on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Atlanta Braves currently hold a 27-31 record, placing them in fourth within the division and well behind the red-hot New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, who were both hovering around .620 winning percentages.

Contributing to Atlanta's uneven start of the 2025 season has been the loss of rookie right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver, who was recently diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and is expected to miss the remainder of 2025.
Amid the turbulence on the field, a significant change has transpired on the coaching front.
On Monday, the club announced the return of Fredi González as third base coach.
Simultaneously, longtime Braves coach Matt Tuiasosopo has accepted a new role as the organization's Minor League Infield Coordinator.
González, a Cuban-born coach and manager now 61 years old, is a familiar face in Atlanta.

He began his Major League coaching career with the Braves as a third base coach from 2003-2006 before being hired to manage the Florida Marlins in October 2006.
Over four seasons in Miami, González guided the Marlins to back-to-back winning records in 2008 and 2009 and was honored as Sporting News Manager of the Year in 2008 after leading the Marlins to an 84-77 record.
Atlanta lured González back in October 2010, naming him the successor to legendary skipper Bobby Cox.

In his five-year tenure (2011-2016), González took the Braves to the playoffs in both 2012 and 2013, compiling an overall managerial record of 434-413.

After parting ways with the Braves in May 2016, González spent stints with the Miami Marlins (third base coach, 2017-18) and Baltimore Orioles (bench coach, 2019-21).
His return to Atlanta reunites him with a front office overseen by Alex Anthopoulos and a managerial staff led by Brian Snitker.

With a current record of 38-22, the Mets sit atop the NL East, boasting a +68 run differential and a 96.9% chance of making the postseason (via Baseball Reference). Advertisement The month of May presented challenges for the Mets, who finished the month with a 15-12 record. That said, despite facing formidable opponents and dealing with injuries to key players, the Mets still maintained a winning record. A main figure in the Mets' success has been closer Edwin Díaz. New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz (39)Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images An exceptional performance from the 31-year-old in May has now earned him the National League Reliever of the Month award. MLB announced this news on Tuesday. Díaz recorded a 0.00 ERA over 11.1 innings, allowing only three hits, striking out 14 batters, and securing five saves. His dominance in high-leverage situations has been instrumental in the Mets' ability to close out tight games. Following the news, the Mets took to social media to celebrate this milestone with a 30-second clip, highlighting some of Díaz's big plays. Advertisement "Sound the trumpets!" the team wrote. "@SugarDiaz39 has been named National League Reliever of the Month!" Overall, Díaz has been a cornerstone of the Mets' bullpen, contributing significantly to their league-best 2.85 ERA . His reliability and consistency have provided the team with a sense of security in late-game scenarios. As the Mets continue their series against the Dodgers, they aim to build on their recent successes. With Tylor Megill (4-4, 3.52 ERA) set to face Clayton Kershaw (0-0, 4.91 ERA) in the upcoming game, the team looks to clinch the series and maintain their momentum into June. Francisco Lindor Had Strong Words for Mets Teammate After Dodgers Game
Francisco Lindor Had Strong Words for Mets Teammate After Dodgers Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Paul Blackburn made a triumphant return to the mound Monday night, helping lead the New York Mets to a gritty 4-3 win over the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. It was Blackburn's first major league start in over nine months, his last appearance coming on Aug. 23, 2024. The 31-year-old right-hander showed no signs of rust, delivering one of the most impactful outings of his nine-year career. Advertisement Working with precision and poise, Blackburn threw 77 pitches—49 for strikes—while allowing just three hits and one walk. He leaned heavily on his cutter against a lefty-stacked Dodgers lineup, opting not to throw a single fastball. 'I can't really rely on a single pitch,' Blackburn explained postgame (via SNY). New York Mets starting pitcher Paul Blackburn (58)Denis Poroy-Imagn Images He struck out Shohei Ohtani twice and ended a fifth-inning threat by inducing a groundout with the tying runs on base—an exclamation point on a comeback performance that energized the Mets clubhouse. One of Blackburn's biggest supporters was shortstop Francisco Lindor, who continued his own streak of excellence. Lindor homered in the win, extending the Mets' record to 27 straight victories when he leaves the yard. Advertisement 'I was super happy,' Lindor told SNY after the game. 'He's been going through a lot and grinding. Just because he hasn't played doesn't mean he hasn't been working hard. To see him come out today and execute his game plan—it was huge. Not only for him, but for the team.' Blackburn, whose career numbers include 87 games, a 22-28 record, 4.80 ERA, 433.1 innings pitched, 332 strikeouts, and a 1.40 WHIP, reminded fans and teammates alike of what he can bring to the mound when healthy. With starters like left-hander Sean Manaea and right-hander Frankie Montas working their way back—Montas already impressing in rehab starts with the Brooklyn Cyclones—the Mets rotation is inching toward full strength. If Blackburn's performance is any indication, help is not only on the way—it's already here. Brandon Nimmo Sends Message After Mets' Loss to Dodgers
Brandon Nimmo Sends Message After Mets' Loss to Dodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday night, New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo misjudged a slicing fly ball off the bat of Freddie Freeman. What should have been a routine out became a nightmare, as Nimmo lost track of the ball near the left-field wall. The ball dropped on the warning track and bounced high as Tommy Edman raced home, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-5 walk-off win at Dodger Stadium. Advertisement Nimmo, who had shifted from center to left field in late innings, appeared to be thrown off by the angle and trajectory of Freeman's drive. It was a cruel ending for a Mets team that had battled back from an early 4-1 deficit. A clutch rally tied the game in the eighth, only for Los Angeles to notch its MLB-leading 20th comeback victory of the season. Freeman's game-winning hit wasn't scorched, but its slicing movement and the pressure-packed moment combined to undo Nimmo's read. Initially drifting toward the wall, Nimmo took a glance over his shoulder to track the ball. When he looked back up, it had veered dramatically to his right. His attempt to recover came too late. By the time the ball landed inches from his glove, the Dodgers were already celebrating. Advertisement 'It acted a little bit differently than what I am used to,' Nimmo said afterward. 'Sometimes that happens in a game. It was unfortunate. Would have loved to make that player... Unfortunately, sometimes that happens." It was a tough-luck moment for a player known for his on-base prowess and hustle combined with his outfield instincts in left. The miscue wasn't officially ruled an error, but its impact was undeniable. For a Mets team clawing for consistency and identity, it was the kind of gut punch that lingers. And for Nimmo, the play served as a frustrating reminder of baseball's cruel unpredictability—especially when the game is quite literally in the air.
