2-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova gets a wild card for this year's tournament

LONDON (AP) — Petra Kvitova is returning to Wimbledon after the 2011 and 2014 champion was awarded a wild card Wednesday for this year's tournament.
Kvitova last played at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2023, and became a mother for the first time when her son was born during last year's Wimbledon tournament.
Kvitova made her return to the WTA Tour in Austin, Texas, in February after 17 months away from the court and is currently ranked 572nd.
Kvitova, from the Czech Republic, was the only non-British player to get a singles wild card to the main draw on Wednesday.
The other seven players with wild cards for the women's draw include British players Heather Watson, Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage, while Dan Evans is among seven British players given a wild card for the men's draw. One more men's wild card is due to be announced 'in due course,' organizers said.

(AP) — Some top Florida Panthers players gutted through significant injuries to help them repeat as Stanley Cup champions, most notably Matthew Tkachuk dealing with a sports hernia and torn adductor muscle on the same side. 'He was a mess," coach Paul Maurice said. "That's the medical term: He was a mess.' Advertisement Maurice said Aleksander Barkov's point production in the final was affected by one of the captain's hands being cut open and that Sam Reinhart returned from a Grade 2 MCL sprain in the Eastern Conference final. 'In Game 1, Sasha split the palm of his hand open,' Maurice said. "He had those sutures torn out twice 'til he just glued it together." Reinhart came back to score four goals in the clinching Game 6 against Edmonton. No player has done that since Maurice 'Rocket Richard' in 1957. Tkachuk scored what turned out to be the Cup-winning goal, four months after getting injured playing for the U.S. in the 4 Nations Face-Off. He missed the second half of the regular season. South Africa's Kyalami circuit says the FIA has approved upgrades which would let it host Formula 1
MIDRAND, South Africa (AP) — Formula 1 could be a step closer to holding a race in Africa again after the owner of the Kyalami circuit in South Africa said Wednesday that the sport's governing body had approved upgrades to the track. A statement from the circuit said that the FIA had 'accepted final design proposals' for work which would upgrade Kyalami from the FIA's Grade 2 to the Grade 1 status required for F1. It added that Kyalami has been given three years to complete the upgrades and that 'selected works' will be carried out only once Kyalami has been selected to host F1. 'Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil,' circuit owner Toby Venter said. Kyalami hosted the most recent F1 race in Africa in 1993 but other countries are also interested in bringing the series back to the continent.
