Nagarjuna gets real about Telugu cinema's changing phase: ‘Audience taste is evolving'
Veteran actor Nagarjuna Akkineni, known for introducing several talented directors to Telugu cinema, has shared a candid perspective on the industry's current challenges. While promoting his upcoming film Kuberaa, Nagarjuna addressed concerns surrounding the perceived decline in theatrical footfalls and the growing dominance of OTT platforms. Amid widespread talk that Telugu audiences are avoiding cinemas and that Bollywood is lagging behind South cinema, Nagarjuna offered a balanced view. 'It is quite natural for the industry to go through ups and downs. Just because an actor or director doesn't deliver hits for a few years, it doesn't mean the industry is failing,' he explained. He highlighted how films like Tourist Family, Court, and Anaganaga have recently resonated with viewers, especially on OTT platforms. Nagarjuna emphasized that the changing preferences of audiences must be respected and reflected in the films being made. 'More films should come with audience tastes in mind,' he stated, pointing out the need for adaptability. While many in the industry continue to focus on box office struggles, Nagarjuna believes the narrative needs to shift. He reminded stakeholders that good cinema is still being appreciated — just in different ways and platforms. After wrapping up Na Saami Ranga, the actor found direction again with Kuberaa and Coolie, both of which he's optimistic about. As someone with experience as both an actor and a producer, Nagarjuna's clarity and practical approach could serve as a much-needed guide for Tollywood. His grounded take offers a reality check — instead of blaming circumstances, it's time to evolve with the audience.

Thug Life box office collection day 10: Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam's film barely earns a crore on second Saturday, makes less than what Indian 2 did in two days
Mani Ratnam's crime thriller Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan in the lead, has slipped down to lakhs in its daily domestic earnings for the past two days. After earning barely Rs 75 lakh on its second Friday and ninth day at the box office, it could barely amass Rs 90 lakh on its second Saturday and 10th day at the box office. Prior to that, Thug Life at least hovered right above the Rs 1 crore mark through its opening week. After opening at Rs 15 crore across all languages on June 5, it dipped down to less than half on the second day when it earned only Rs 7.15 crore. Even the opening weekend couldn't help increase its earnings significantly. As per Sacnilk, the current box office collection of Thug Life in India stands at Rs 45.65 crore. The major chunk comes from the native Tamil version, followed by the dubbed Telugu and Hindi versions respectively. Even after 10 days, Thug Life is struggling to cross even the Rs 50 crore mark, which even Haasan's critically panned vigilante drama Indian 2 amassed in just its first two days last year. In the Hindi market, Thug Life is facing stiff competition from Tarun Mansukhani's ensemble whodunit comedy Housefull 5, headlined by Akshay Kumar, which has earned almost Rs 100 crore more than Thug Life in just nine days since its release on June 6. Also starring Simbu and Trisha, Thug Life reunites Haasan and Ratnam 38 years after their cult classic Nayakan. Thug Life could not be released in Karnataka after Haasan's comments about Kannada language sparked a major controversy. On Friday, the Supreme Court on Friday sought the Karnataka government's response on a plea seeking protection against alleged threats over the screening of Thug Life in Karnataka theatres. The bench recorded the counsel's argument that the so-called ban under threat of violence stems not from any lawful process but from a deliberate campaign of terror, including explicit threat of arson against cinema halls, incitement of large-scale violence targeting linguistic minorities. It added that the Karnataka government through its authorities concerned has become a silent party to this undermining of the Constitution and its failure to use the full force of the law against those openly issuing threats of death, arson, and communal warfare is not just negligence; it is a surrender that effectively hands control to violent non-state actors. 'This constitutes a profound and flagrant failure of the law and order machinery in the state, signifying a dangerous weakening of the constitutional machinery's ability to function and protect its citizens,' the SC said. Also Read — Kamal Haasan continues to fight against Karnataka govt for banning Thug Life despite its box office failure: 'It violates constitutional rights' On June 9, the top court refused to grant an urgent hearing on a plea filed by a theatre association seeking protection against alleged threats over the screening of the film in Karnataka theatres. It had asked the theatre association from Karnataka to approach the Karnataka High Court instead.
