Bernas, USM use barn owls to combat paddy field pests

ADIBERAS Nasional Bhd (Bernas) is collaborating with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in the 'Driving Sustainable Agriculture' project which uses barn owls (Tyto alba javanica) as a natural biological control agent to combat paddy field rats — one of the primary threats to the crop yields of smallholder farmers in Malaysia.
This collaborative project with USM is driven by the Barn Owl and Rodent Research Group (BORG) under the School of Biological Sciences, and is fully funded by GlobalGiving, an international organisation that supports sustainable development worldwide.
BORG coordinator and lead researcher Dr Hasber Salim said the project stands as evidence of how ecology-based approaches can replace toxic rat poisons, which pose significant risks to humans, wildlife and the environment.
'We are deeply grateful to GlobalGiving for its trust and full financial support for this project,' he said in a statement.

He added that the project is specifically focused on paddy-growing regions, particularly supporting bottom 40% income group (B40) farmers in adopting more environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices. Bernas plays a crucial role in on-ground implementation, including logistics, the distribution of 20 barn owl nest boxes to selected farmers and the management of community awareness campaigns.
Bernas head of the farm management department Mohd Zakri Zulkafli shared that the company is committed to supporting this innovative effort as it aligns with Bernas' role as a key stakeholder in the nation's rice industry.
'In addition to helping farmers reduce costs and the risks associated with chemical pesticides, this initiative also contributes towards a more sustainable and competitive agricultural ecosystem,' he said.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) exchange between Bernas and USM to conduct a pilot study on the use of barn owls as biological control agents is expected to bring significant benefits to paddy farmers.
Mohd Zakri added that this pilot programme has the potential to become an alternative eco-friendly and safe pest control model for paddy fields, in line with Bernas' agenda to ensure the sustainability of the nation's rice industry and the well-being of local farmers. — TMR

KOTA KINABALU: Jafli Latu owns a piece of land that he inherited from his parents deca­des ago. To the 63-year-old, the land is more than just a farm; it is a legacy, a symbol of resilience, a connection to his roots and a source of pride that carries the hopes of his family and community. Jafli has experienced it all – from using buffaloes to plough the soil to embracing technology- driven farming. 'Today, we plant with purpose. Not just to survive, but to grow and to build something lasting,' he said with a smile, brushing soil from his hands. This year's Kaamatan celebration, the harvest festival cherished by the Kadazandusun community, holds special meaning for Jafli and his fellow farmers. Traditionally, a time to honour the earth and give thanks, Kaa­ma­tan has come to symbolise more than just the end of a planting season. In Kota Belud, it now marks the triumph of a new agricultural approach that is transforming lives. Jafli recalls his late father's wisdom, who used to say that rice is more than food; it nourishes the soul. 'For many years, farming felt like a gamble. We barely harvested two tonnes per hectare, sometimes even less. It was all back- breaking work, done entirely by hand,' he recalled, adding that the high cost of fertilisers, unpredictable weather and uncertain yields made things worse. However, all that began to change when Jafli was introduced to the Large-Scale Smart Padi Field (SMART SBB) programme, a bold initiative that blends ­modern agricultural technology with tradi­tional knowledge. He was sceptical at first, just like the other 40 people who joined the programme, but when they saw yields increasing from 2.6 to more than four metric tonnes per hectare in just one season, they recognised the programme's potential. The SMART SBB initiative, a collaborative effort between the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry and Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas), aims to streng­then Malaysia's food security through strategic, field-level partnerships. Launched in June 2022 in Kampung Jawi-Jawi, Kota Belud, the programme delivered immediate impact. Not only did the yields rise by more than 60% in the first season alone, but there was greater interest from fellow farmers, and in 2024, the number of participants doubled to over 80 across nine areas. In addition to Jawi-Jawi, partici­pating areas now cover over 160ha of padi fields, including Tim­bang Dayang, Taun Gusi Keran­jangan, Sangkir and Kesa­pang. Under the programme, farmers are now using drones to survey their fields, planting TR8 seeds directly into water, and operating modern padi transplanters, all of which have made the process faster, more efficient and less physically demanding. For Terpilih Sunus from Kam­pung Kesapang, the most significant change was not only the improved yield, but the shift in how they farm. 'When we saw our yields rise by over 60% in the first season, I knew we could not return to the old ways. Now, with guidance from technical officers, we follow a more precise method. 'We use drones, plant the TR8 seeds more efficiently and operate machinery that saves us days of work,' she said. To Terpilih and many other participants, the combination of training, logistical support and struc­tured market access under this public-private partnership has set a new benchmark for the future of Malaysia's padi sector. Her sentiments were echoed by Noraini James, who recalled how tasks that once took weeks are now completed in just a few days. 'There is no more back-breaking seed carrying. Now, I refer to drone-generated soil data. Our yields have tripled,' she said with a laugh. Noraini explained that the programme had not only boosted production but also changed her outlook on agriculture. 'I used to work in the city, but I came back to help my parents. After seeing our yield triple, I now see a future in this field. We are no longer just planting padi, we are managing harvests like a business,' she said. For farmers in Kota Belud, this year's Kaamatan carries a deeper meaning. It is no longer just a cultural celebration but a reflection of resilience, renewal and progress. 'Kaamatan is about honouring the earth and its blessings. This year, I feel truly worthy of recei­ving the Kaamatan rice because our work has been more systema­tic and productive,' said Noraini. The SMART SBB programme has not only modernised traditional practices but also ensured that farmers have access to quality inputs, fair pricing and guaranteed purchase agreements. Consistent technical support and reliable procurement channels have lifted the burden of having to sell harvest at poor pri­ces or uncertain markets. As a strategic implementation partner, Bernas plays a key role in supporting Malaysia's food securi­ty through its direct involvement in field operations and market facilitation. 'Before this, our harvests often went unsold because we could not get them to the market ­quickly. 'Now, with dedicated buyers and structured channels, we have the confidence to keep planting,' said Jafli with a smile.

Besides the unpredictable weather, thousands of rats have been destroying his crop, slashing his income by nearly 50%. "These rats usually come out at night and feast on the matured padi. It gets worse during harvest time. "I have tried using pesticides and rat poison to try to eliminate the pests. "I spend thousands of ringgit each planting season just to protect my crops," the 43-year-old lamented. However, Abdul Aziz, who has been a farmer for about 20 years, now realises that the use of chemicals is harmful to the environment and health. "Pesticides do not only contaminate the padi fields but also pollute the surroundings and kill other animals," he said. Farmers like Abdul Aziz are now relieved that they can now consider a more friendly form of rat control: using Eastern barn owls to hunt the rats. Native to Peninsular Malaysia, the Eastern barn owl's voracious appetite for rats helps protect crops. This pilot project by Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) Barn Owl and Rodent Research Group (BORG) will see 20 barn owl nest boxes installed at fields belonging to farmers under the B40 group in Paya Keladi, Kepala Batas. The nest boxes are designed to attract owls to nest in them without additional human intervention, with Abdul Aziz saying the new method will help manage the rodent population effectively. "It will reduce the need for chemical poisons," he explained. "Although the use of barn owls was practised in the past by local farmers, there was little to no monitoring of rodent problems in the fields, which made it harder for farmers to protect their crops." USM's Assoc Prof Dr Hasber Salim said his team initiated the project to help farmers adopt environmentally friendly practices. "Rat damage can reduce yields by up to 60%. With barn owls present, farmers experience less crop loss, which translates to higher income and better quality harvests as one barn owl family can hunt up to 3,000 rats per year,' he said. Under this pilot project carried out in collaboration with Malaysia's national rice agency Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas), each nest box can serve an area of about 5ha to 10ha. Each nest setup costs about RM800, depending on location and logistics, with funding made possible through a RM42,671 (US$10,000) grant from GlobalGiving, a US-based non-­governmental organisation. The project will be monitored over a period of three years. Each week, BORG members will collect owl pellets – regurgitated remains of prey – to identify the species of rats consumed and estimate the number of pests removed. 'We will analyse the pellets to get actual data. 'That's how we estimate that a single owl family can eat up to 3,000 rats a year,' he said. Hasber added that the initiative draws on past experience of using barn owls in oil palm plantations under a similar conservation project with the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation. "Although barn owls have been used in padi fields since the 1970s, the practice has been largely neglected in recent years. 'We're bringing back a proven concept but with improved planning and monitoring,' he said. Hasber added that instead of using the outdated density of one nest per 40ha, his team is now using a high-density model of one nest per five to 10ha.

Aiming sky high with self-built rocket project

JOHOR BARU: Some 40 engineering students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have been working together for the past nine months, designing and building their own prototype rocket, which is expected to fly about 3,000m in the air. Their aim now is to make the nation proud as the rocket, named Rimau 1, is slated to be part of the International Rocket Engineering Competition 2025 (IREC 2025), which will be held in Texas, the United States, next month. Final year mechanical engineering student T. Arykummara, who is also the project director, said their 2.8m-long rocket, weighing 28kg, was made from scratch using locally sourced materials.'Only the propulsion for the rocket has been sourced from overseas. We have allocated a budget of about RM150,000 for the project. 'We hope to launch the rocket, which is expected to travel about 10,000ft or roughly a distance of 3km before two parachutes are deployed for it to safely land,' he said in an interview. Arykummara said this was a major feat for the students, mostly third and final year students from various engineering background, who are all members of the UTM Rocketry Team. 'We are the only Malaysian team selected for the competition. 'We went through four levels of judging since November last year with the final green light given earlier this month,' he said. Initially, about 400 teams from around the world submitted their designs but in the first round, that number was narrowed down to about 170 teams. 'Now, about 160 teams will be vying in the final round of the competition,' Arykummara said, adding that they divided themselves into seven teams to manage the project including structural, electronics, aerodynamics, propulsion, safety, recovery and payload. 'We also have a management team which is tasked mainly with sourcing for funding for the project,' he said. He also thanked the team's five UTM lecturers who are their advisers for the project, as well as the sponsors who helped with funding and materials for the rocket. In 2022 and 2023, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) took part in the competition. 'This year, we were supposed to collaborate with USM but they withdrew in the early stages, so we went in all the way,' Arykummara said. He added that their rocket is now 95% ready and only needs some minor finishing touches, including a coat of paint. Asked if they have tested the rocket, he said everything is good in theory as they do not have the propulsion system to test it yet. 'We cannot simply test the rocket because a propulsion system is something that is strictly controlled in Malaysia. 'So, we can only try it out once we are in the United States,' he said, adding that their rocket will be transported in four different components which can be assembled together. He also said their biggest challenge is lack of funding as they can only take 10 people, including a lecturer, for the competition. 'We started crowdfunding a few days ago as we hope to raise about RM86,000 to bring along six other students,' he said, hoping that individuals or companies will donate via the UTM Rocketry Team's social media accounts. Arykummara said if given a chance, they would like to bring everyone who played a role in the project as it would be a good place for them to meet and exchange ideas with other international teams and companies. Lecturers Dr Ahmad Humaizi Rozaini and Dr Muhammad Faruq Foong Mohamad Faiz Foong, who are among their advisers, said they were proud of their students' achievements. 'We were initially sceptical about the idea but once we saw their determination and passion, we encouraged them. 'Even the university assisted with some funding,' they said, hoping that the project would be a success and achieve the right altitude after lift-off. They also hoped that more engineering students would be inspired to come up with designs and join competitions to showcase their talent and creativity.
