Oakland Ballers to transform BART legacy car rejected by A's into concession stand
BART said the Athletics had plans to bring the legacy car with them to their new Las Vegas stadium to commemorate their long history in Oakland. But in 2023, BART received an email from the Athletics that stated the team would no longer accept it.
So, instead, the BART car was delivered to Raimondi Park, home of the Ballers, as part of BART's legacy car decommissioning program.
The Ballers plan to transform the car into a concession stand at the park and have plans to unveil it next season.
"Adding this BART legacy car is one of many examples of how our ballpark is going to continue to grow with us," said Ballers Co-Founder Paul Freedman. "We want Raimondi Park to be a living museum full of tributes to Bay Area culture. We can't wait to repurpose and creatively feature our BART legacy car in the near future."
The Ballers and BART have worked together before. They entered a partnership ahead of the team's
inaugural season
, even hosting a BART Night at the Park in 2024.
"It was disappointing when the Athletics notified us by email that they no longer wanted this car," said BART Chief Communications Officer Alicia Trost. "So, we asked Oakland's newest professional sports team if they'd like to have it, and they responded with an immediate, 'Yes!' We are grateful to the team for saving this piece of Bay Area history so that Oakland baseball fans will be able to enjoy it."
In April of last year, BART retired its
legacy fleet
after serving the Bay Area for more than 50 years.
Eight recipients were then selected to transform the legacy cars.

Abrams hits walk-off single and Nationals end 6-game skid with 2-1 win over Athletics
WASHINGTON (AP) — CJ Abrams singled home Robert Hassell III with the winning run in the ninth inning, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Athletics 2-1 on Wednesday night to stop a six-game losing streak. Athletics starter Jeffrey Springs retired his first 15 batters before Riley Adams tied the score 1-all with a leadoff homer in the sixth. Hassell doubled off Michael Kelly (2-1) to begin the ninth and scored on Adams' one-out single when left fielder Tyler Soderstrom's throw was off line. Soderstrom opened the top of the sixth with his 20th home run. Nearly three years after his major league debut, Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli finally returned from Tommy John surgery to make his second career start. He pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings and left to a standing ovation. Jose A. Ferrer (3-3) worked a perfect inning for the win. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Wizards' Tre Johnson threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Nationals
Washington Wizards rookie Tre Johnson threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Wednesday as the Washington Nationals continued a three-game series against the Athletics. Johnson was joined by fellow first-year teammates Will Riley (No. 21 pick) and Jamir Watkins (No. 43 pick) at Nationals Park for the occasion. He took the mound, delivered the pitch and posed for photos afterward with right fielder Daylen Lile and Screech, the team mascot. The Nationals were looking to even the series against the Athletics after suffering a 16-7 loss on Tuesday, falling to 44-68 on the season. They are in last place in the NL East. Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season at Texas, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year. The sixth pick in the NBA draft debuted with the Wizards in the NBA Summer League, averaging 19.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in two appearances. He finished with 21 points on July 13. Johnson is among a crowded draft class for the Wizards as the organization continues to build toward the future. The team was excited to add the trio and is eager to watch the players take the court.
