Welcome to our weekly music post, where we spotlight our favorite new songs and albums. Hop in the comments and tell us: What new music are you listening to?
Since the release of Laura Stevenson's last album, which came out in 2021, the singer-songwriter has earned a master's degree in music therapy. She's putting those skills into practice with her upcoming album, Late Great (out June 27). 'When I started this [music therapy] career path a few years ago, I kind of quieted my own healing relationship to music, because I honestly didn't have time, but this record is me getting back to it. This is me processing, and reconnecting with that part of myself, and it carried me through,' Stevenson explained in a press release. On 'Honey,' Late Great's first single, Stevenson turns her focus inward, vulnerably assessing the damage of a break-up.
'Elderberry Wine,' the new track from Wednesday (released, appropriately, on a Wednesday), leans more heavily into the band's alt-country side than their occasional dalliances with shoegaze. Singer and guitarist Karly Hartzman's gorgeous vocals are a Trojan horse hiding a deep pain at the center of the lyrics. ''Elderberry Wine' is about the potential for sweet things in life (love, family, success) to become poison if not prepared for and attended to correctly,' Hartzman explained in a press release. Earlier this year, guitarist MJ Lenderman announced that he would no longer tour with the band, though he'd continue to record with them in the studio.
Suede frontman Brett Anderson doesn't want listeners to have any illusions about the Britpop band's upcoming tenth album, Antidepressants (out September 5). 'This is broken music for broken people,' Anderson said in a press release. 'Disintegrate' is the first single, and it's also the album's opening track. 'Come down and disintegrate with me,' Anderson sings in the arena-ready chorus, and it's so catchy that he almost makes the bleak lyrics sound appealing.
Quit To Play Chess is a posthumous album from Cola Boyy, a musician, community organizer, and disability activist who died in 2024. Cola Boyy's disco-inspired sound (he called himself a 'disabled disco innovator') permeates Quit To Play Chess, which pairs his passion for bringing people together with groovy beats. 'Tell me, is there Hennessy in heaven? / If not, I'm gonna nosedive straight to hell,' he sings on 'Babylon,' giving listeners a good idea of what made him such a magnetic presence both on stage and in real life. Bandcamp put together an excellent tribute to Cola Boyy that features interviews with his friends and musical collaborators like Mac DeMarco and Juan Wauters, and it highlights how special and unique he was as an artist, and what a loss it is that he's no longer with us.
Good news: Stereolab is back, and they're just as weird and hard-to-define as ever. It's been 15 years since Stereolab's last album, 2010's Not Music, after which the band disbanded to work on other projects. Now, they've returned with a new album, Instant Holograms On Film. If song titles like 'Electrified Teenybop!' and 'Esemplastic Creeping Eruption' are any indication, Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier haven't lost a bit of their cerebral spark in their time apart.
Edgar Wright's 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers shined a long-overdue light on the relentlessly innovative band Sparks, who have been consistently releasing music since 1971. MAD! is the 25th album from the duo, which consists of brothers Ron and Russell Mael. The Maels' uncanny ability to reflect the current moment has always been one of their best magic tricks, and it's present here on songs like 'A Little Bit Of Light Banter,' in which a couple pointedly refuses to talk about any difficult topical issues in favor of putting their heads down and not making a fuss. MAD! reflects a world that's out of alignment, filtered through an absurdist lens. It's everything you could want from a Sparks album.

Oasis tribute band to headline city music event

A music event in Wolverhampton part-funded by the government will be headlined by an Oasis tribute act. Oasis Forever will bring Britpop to Market Square as part of WonderWolves on 13 September. The day is partly supported by a share of £11,200 given to City of Wolverhampton Council by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Chris Burden, cabinet member for city development, jobs and skills, said it was "really exciting to be able to put events such as these on in the city centre". The tribute band will perform many of Oasis' biggest hits such as Wonderwall, Live Forever and Champagne Supernova, the council said. The announcement comes on the heels of Noel and Liam Gallagher's Oasis Live '25 reunion tour, which began in July and marked the end of an almost 16-year split. The Wolverhampton gig will start at 16:00 BST and feature supporting acts. Burden said he would encourage "everyone to get your tickets fast as this is set to be a popular event". Jessica Alba was just spotted in Miami — her new boyfriend's hometown

The plot involving Jessica Alba's love life thickens. The 44-year-old actress has been linked for the last few months to 'Top Gun: Maverick' actor Danny Ramirez. On Monday, Alba was spotted by paparazzi at 1 Hotel in Miami Beach. In the Daily Mail pics, the 'Honey' star is strolling in the sand holding her 7-year-old son Hayes' hand. Coincidence? Ramirez is originally from Miami, and apparently still has family here. The 32-year-old wasn't seen in any of the snaps, but we can't help but wonder if he wasn't far off. Though born in Chicago, Ramirez was raised in the Magic City, attending Pitbull's alma mater Coral Park Senior High School in the Westchester area. He is a big Hurricanes fan, telling UM's website he went to his first game vs. Boston College at the old Orange Bowl when he was still in second grade, and painting a huge 'U' on his chest. And anyone curious for clues on Alba's Instagram was out of luck. Though she did confirm (sort of) that she was in town, posting a picture of her on the beach drinking out of a coconut. The simple, one-word caption: 'Sunshine.' Alba filed for divorce from movie producer Cash Warren in February. Besides Hayes they also share two teen daughters Honor, 17, and Haven, who turns 14 on Aug. 14. Warren seems cool with his ex's current situation. 'I'm happy for her,' Warren told TMZ last month. 'I don't know him, but he seems like a good guy.' Attention, Danny: If you weren't in town for this outing, the first Hurricanes game of the season is Aug. 31 at Hard Rock Stadium vs. Notre Dame. We fully expect you in attendance — and bring your boo, too.

Fans head to Murrayfield as Oasis play in Scotland for first time in 16 years

Britpop fans are gearing up for the three highly anticipated Oasis shows at Murrayfield as the first is set to begin later on Friday. The Mancunian rockers will return to Scotland for the first time in 16 years for three sold-out shows – held on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday. While their exact set-list has not been revealed as yet, on previous dates the band has performed classics such as Wonderwall, which propelled the rockers into stardom, as well as Morning Glory, Talk Tonight, D'you Know What I Mean? and Don't Look Back in Anger. ScotRail has announced a number of extra services operating to and from Edinburgh to cater for the vast number of fans travelling to the concert. The railway operator also says it is increasing capacity on its services, ensuring no-one is stuck for transportation before and after the show. In a short message posted on X ahead of the concert, the band, led by Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel, said: 'Edinburgh. Are you ready?' The post gained more than 10,000 likes and legions of fans responded in turn, stating they cannot wait to see them perform at the stadium. The band has recently performed in a number of cities including Cardiff and London. The group will next head to Ireland, before moving on to Canada, the US, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and South America.
