Goa Tourism Board to Hire Consultant for Enhanced Private Sector Investment and Project Monitoring
The tourism department plans to appoint a consultant to assist the
Goa Tourism Board
(GTB) with funding from the Centre and international financing agencies. The tourism department hopes that the consultant can also promote private sector investments in Goa's tourism sector.
Along the lines of the consultant appointed by the Goa Investment Promotion and Facilitation Board, the tourism department will count on the consultant to provide advisory services along with monitoring support for ongoing projects.
'The consultant will help go
Goa's beaches are its crown jewels, drawing travelers from all over the world. From the bustling sands of Baga and Calangute to the serene shores of Palolem and Agonda, there's a beach for every vibe. The golden sands, swaying palms, and warm Arabian Sea offer a perfect escape from the daily grind.
vt conduct pre-feasibility studies and track the progress of all the projects being implemented in the state for the tourism sector. This will help in deciding the best use of funds and also help identify underutilised or idle department assets,' said a department official.
The consultant will be appointed for a five-year contract. The Goa Tourism Board is headed by chief minister Pramod Sawant, with tourism minister Rohan Khaunte serving as co-chairman.
As part of the contract, the consultant will be required to conduct feasibility studies, identify and recommend new schemes and potential funding sources under which new tourism projects of the state can be undertaken. The department said the consultant will also suggest new policies, guidelines, and regulatory measures, if required, for tourist operators.
Given the recent claims of a drop in tourism footfalls, it is not surprising that the tourism department wants the consultant to track performance indicators—annual
tourist footfalls
and revenue generated—and then compare it with national and other international tourism destinations.
'The consultant will coordinate with the Goa Investment Promotion and Facilitation Board in promoting private sector investments in Goa's tourism sector. The board requires assistance in framing investor-friendly policies that can promote investment opportunities and attract private investors to Goa. If we want to bring in new activities and businesses, we need new policies,' said a department official.
The department also hopes that the consultant can keep a watch on issues and concerns faced by tourists in the state. In 2014, the department decided to formulate a Tourism Master Plan and Policy along with the formation of a Goa Tourism Board to streamline the initiatives taken up for the tourism sector.

Engg & diploma colleges get 90% placement rate
Panaji: Goa's engineering and diploma colleges recorded a placement rate of 90% in engineering and over 89% in diploma institutions, said the department of information technology, electronics and communications. The department said that more than 500 eligible IT engineers were recruited through a mix of on-campus and off-campus drives, reflecting strong recruiter confidence. Another 300 graduates chose to pursue higher education, while many others are exploring self-employment, entrepreneurship, or alternative career paths, said the department. The department officials said that engineering students are not just seeking jobs, but actively reskilling and upskilling themselves to ensure that they remain employable. 'The state is building a skilling ecosystem that evolves with industry needs — where students are not just graduates, but also contributors to innovation,' said Rohan Khaunte, minister for it, electronics and communications. Initiatives like the Startup Yatra Bootcamp, masterclasses, the Goa AI Mission, and industry programs like BridgeAura '25 are playing a vital role in this shift, exposing students to real-world innovation, applied learning, and hands-on problem-solving, said the department. It also said that it wants to encourage students to apply their learning to real-world challenges. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). LDA denies map approval for houses in illegal colonies
Lucknow: The Lucknow Development Authority has ruled out approving building maps for houses on 7.5-mt-wide roads in 241 illegal colonies, even if mapping norms are eased. The decision, taken at the recent LDA board meeting, is part of the enforcement of the Master Plan 2021. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under the new rule, approval will be given only if a 7.5-mt road is at least 200 mt long and built with govt funds. Roads of the same width developed by private builders in unapproved colonies will not qualify. The restriction applies to colonies listed as "bad colonies" in the Avadh region's master plan. The clarification came after people turned out over the map approval queries from various illegal colonies identified in the master plan survey at the LDA office. LDA officials said these colonies were identified in the 2021 Master Plan as being developed without meeting LDA standards. Many were first flagged 24 years ago and still lack basic amenities such as proper roads, drainage, parks and community spaces. While the actual number of such colonies has grown, the official count will stay frozen at 241 for policy purposes. The LDA has been working for years to regularise illegal colonies, but strict norms on road width, drainage and open space have kept many from qualifying. Even proposals to relax mapping rules will not benefit these areas. An LDA official said, "The move is meant to prevent unplanned growth. If we approve maps in colonies without basic infrastructure, we will only be encouraging unplanned urbanisation in the city, which will affect the residents in the future."

In no-Uber Goa, FIR against aggregator; airport drop matter reaches assembly
Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Friday govt would act against the illegal operation of Uber in the state after an opposition MLA said in the House that somebody in South Goa successfully booked a cab via the aggregator's app in Goa, a state that doesn't permit major app-based aggregators. North Goa SP Rahul Gupta said that an FIR has been registered against the Uber management and the driver, Devendra Satardekar, for allegedly illegally operating app-based taxi business. AAP MLA Venzy Viegas told the House on Friday that on Thursday night, a taxi was booked on the Uber app from Benaulim to Mopa (home to the Manohar International Airport). The Benaulim MLA said that some taxi operators download the app from the play store, register themselves, and start operating under the Uber app. The CM immediately responded saying govt has not given permission to Uber to operate in Goa. 'We will act against them,' he said. In a separate case, assistant director of transport filed a complaint against the management of Uber and a taxi driver Gupta said that the driver, allegedly in connivance with the Uber management, was found operating and picking up passengers via the app without the necessary state transport permit or licence. 'Such operations allegedly violate the transport laws of Goa, pose safety and security risks to passengers, and cause loss of revenue to the state exchequer,' he said. Recently, taxi unions in both North and South Goa voiced their firm opposition to the newly-drafted Goa transport aggregator guidelines, 2025, arguing that govt's push for app-based services would affect their livelihoods. The draft guidelines speak of regulating ride-hailing services and allowing taxi drivers to operate through any aggregator app of their choice using govt-notified rates. State govt received around 4,000 objections and suggestions for the guidelines. Coastal belt MLAs supported the demands of the taxi operators. Following pressure from them, Sawant said in June that cab aggregators like Ola and Uber would not be allowed in Goa. The entry of app-based taxis is a highly controversial issue in Goa, where local cabbies vigorously oppose any plan to introduce them, stating that this would eat into their earnings. Goa has witnessed several agitations, and taxis have even gone off the roads to stop govt from allowing app-based taxi aggregators in the state. Currently, two app-based aggregators supported by state govt are operating in the state, but there has been confrontation between app-based taxi drivers (who show up to pick up customers) and regular taxi operators. Goa police has in the past filed FIRs against taxi operators for assaulting app-based taxi drivers in Goa. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
