Havoc filming locations: Where in Wales was Netflix thriller filmed?

BBC News26-04-2025

Although it is set in an unnamed US city, the whole of Netflix's new thriller Havoc - including shootouts and car chases - was filmed in Wales.Starring Tom Hardy as a "jaded" detective, the film tells the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong.Gareth Evans, the Welshman who directed the action film, said recreating the USA in south Wales was "challenging", but he wanted to bring work to the area."I started going around, like, Swansea, Port Talbot, Cardiff and Newport, looking for any little bit of architecture that I could find that might pass as a little bit Americana," he said.
"And so we took a look and we thought if we can get 30% or 40% real in camera then the VFX (visual effects) can take care of the rest."While many scenes were filmed in a studio in Cardiff, a number of real Welsh locations provided the backdrop for action scenes. The film's producer Ed Talfan said the idea of transforming south Wales into North America sounded "nuts" on paper, but said what was achieved was a testament to the talented crews working in Wales.
1. Brangwyn Hall, Swansea
Swansea's Brangwyn Hall doubled up as the exterior of a fictional city police station.Inside the concert venue, which was built in 1934, the stairwell was also used for filming as part of the film's gala hall.Evans revealed the film's interior police station scenes were actually shot at the Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay."I think we weren't popular when we did that because it was in the middle of half-term week," said Evans."So we had to shut down the fair for two days, so for any mums and dads and kids - I'm very sorry."
2. Bute Street, Cardiff
Cardiff's Bute Street was turned into a US boulevard with 30cm (12in) of fake snow for one of Havoc's night-time scenes.Neil Rayment, a goldsmith whose business on Bute Street became part of the set, described how the production team built a fake metal stairway in front of his shop before filming began."They came and constructed this amazing thing," said Mr Rayment. "I've been to New York and it looked like that very sort of iconic steel structure walkway... quite dark, quite industrial, and they'd literally built three storeys of that all up the outside of the front of a building."He said the front of his shop was also covered with the fake snow."Every time we'd bring down the shutter for the next three months after they'd wrapped we'd have like little bits of snowflakes falling at the front of the shutter."Mr Rayment also made some of the detective badges used as props in the show.
"They have certain pieces that have to be really authentic. They're called the hero pieces because they're in close-up," he said."Then we had some action ones that had to be quite flexible, to make sure they put up with a bit of fighting, because there's always action isn't there when Tom Hardy's involved."
3. Swansea University's Bay Campus
A key scene in the film is when Forest Whitaker's character is waiting in gridlocked traffic. This was shot at Swansea University's Bay Campus, with added visual effects applied after filming.
4. Trade Street, Cardiff
Trade Street, just behind Cardiff Central Station, was used for exterior shots of Chinatown, a fish market and Wong's Alley."We came up with a Chinatown and I didn't want it to feel like the Chinatowns you see in western cities like London," said Evans."Let's take a look at the old-walled city vibe. We went a little mythic in our world-build."
5. The fishing shack
The film's fishing shack location was filmed in multiple parts of Wales. Some interior shots were filmed at the Swansea University Bay Campus.Other exterior shots were filmed at Dragon Studios in Bridgend. But the third and final iteration of the shack, used for dramatic scenes, was built in Candleston Woods in Merthyr Mawr, Bridgend.
6. Baglan train station
There are no spoilers here but Havoc's climax - filmed on train tracks - was actually shot at Baglan railway station in Neath Port Talbot. The film's producer, Ed Talfan, said Evans had "always wanted this final, gigantic set piece in the fishing shack and on the railway sidings"."I don't think there's any limit to the scale of projects that can come to Wales and hopefully it's the first of many," he added.

Netflix on verge of dropping all 8 episodes of dark TV drama 'compared to Ozark'

The TV event of the summer might be just around the corner, with Netflix ready to drop all eight episodes of a new drama that's been compared to Ozark. The Waterfront, which has been created by Dawson's Creek and Scream writer Kevin Williamson, is set for release on June 19, with all episodes dropping at once. A story synopsis provided by Netflix says: 'Set against the backdrop of coastal North Carolina… [The Waterfront] centers on the fictional Buckley family and their crumbling fishing empire.' Starring 90s movie star Holt McCallany, Coyote Ugly actress Maria Bello, and Supergirl legend Mellisa Benoist, The Waterfront 'explores family dynamics and the lengths people will go to when their legacy is on the line'. The series has been in production since May 2024, with the majority of the cast announced later in the year – and now fans are ready to see the whole thing. This is definitely giving me the same vibes as Ozark did!' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video @AlexisD6575 said of the trailer: 'I was originally interested because Melissa Benoist is in it but the rest of the cast got me even more and honestly it looks like the show could be really fun too!' Fans were also shocked to see That 70s Show star Topher Grace in the trailer, with @Brent0034 saying: 'Did anyone else notice Eric Foreman finally grew up and is now running his own drug operation?' The series has been compared to Ozark not just because of the Netflix connection between them but because both shows depict an otherwise ordinary family pulled into drug crime. In Ozark, the Byrde family move to the titular region to continue laundering money for a large Mexican drug cartel, leading to several violent confrontations. The Waterfront creator Kevin Williamson told Netflix: 'We've never really seen a story about the commercial fisherman told before in any sort of dramatic way in a family drama. '[The fishing industry] is being taken away from them bit by bit. [The lead characters] will do anything to hold onto it – it represents their family. They also care about the town, and so many people depend on them.' He continued, talking about the plot, which sees the characters having to make millions of dollars very quickly: 'It's about a bunch of people who make mistakes, they do some bad things, and then they get in deeper and deeper and deeper. 'When you have all these people doing bad things, it's always nice when they do that one good thing that can bring hope back.' Kevin also revealed that the story behind the series is, in part, a personal and autobiographical one, with his father involved in the fishing industry once upon a time. More Trending 'The fishing industry upturned in the '80s – my dad couldn't feed his family. So, someone came along and said, 'Hey, if you do this one thing, you can make all this money' and it was hard to say no to. 'My dad – a very, very good man – got tempted to do some things that weren't so legal and got in some trouble. [But] it put food on the table and it helped me go to college.' Netflix fans keep watching 'amazing new take on a classic' despite low rating

Fans have been singing its praises despite initial reviews Netflix viewers can't stop watching a 'must see film' that offers a fresh spin on a classic tale. The 2018 release, Robin Hood, has surprisingly become one of the most viewed titles on the platform, despite a meagre 14% rating. ‌ At the time of writing, it currently sits in second place in the top ten films most watched by subscribers in the UK. It's sandwiched between recent releases Tyler Perry's Straw in the top spot and French action thriller K.O. in third. ‌ Robin Hood is a radical reinterpretation of the timeless story of the outlaw who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. In this version, Taron Egerton, known for his roles in Kingsman, Rocketman and Carry-On, portrays Lord Robin of Loxley. He seeks revenge after returning from the Third Crusade to discover that the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn, has declared him dead and seized all his property, reports Surrey Live. According to Empire's review of the film, Robin's journey mirrors that of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. Egerton's rendition of the character even starts being referred to as 'The Hood'. He is trained by Jamie Foxx's character Yahya or John. Meanwhile, Robin also attempts to win back his girlfriend Marian, played by Eve Hewson, who later starred in Netflix's The Perfect Couple. Marian is now with another man, Will Scarlet, portrayed by Jamie Dornan, who is actually a member of the Merry Men in the original tales. ‌ Despite the somewhat tepid critical reception of the film, Netflix audiences have found reasons to be entertained. One admirer took to the internet to express their thoughts, stating: "This is a must see movie. Its a new take and twist of the classic tale of Robin Hood and breathes life into the legend once again. It might not be the most historically accurate remake of the tale but that is part of its charm." They pressed on, saying: "Solid stunts and despite all the hate the movie has endured none can question the hard work and love the whole cast and crew put into it. Their extraordinary archery skills are way beyond just CGI. In fact they were trained by famous archer Lars Anderson and can more than handle themselves around a bow and arrow." ‌ Another enthusiast commented: "I thought this film was incredible. An amazing new take on a classic. The immense number of Robin Hood films were starting to repeat one another and it was frankly getting tired, but this brought the movies back alive for younger audiences that perhaps haven't been too engaged in the previous versions. With a brilliant cast, some of which are popular, well known actors, and others who are rising stars, I think the production is incredible." One person even suggested: "Outside of the legendary (Disney) cartoon, this is the best Robin Hood out there." Meanwhile, another voiced a congruent opinion: "It was so much better than expected. It was a different take on the old Robin Hood movies." However, not all viewers were impressed. One disgruntled film-goer echoed the critics' sentiments, stating: "Everything was just as bad as the trailer promised. Don't watch this unwatchable piece of garbage. It will haunt your eyes forever."
