LJP's Chirag Paswan ends suspense, makes big announcement ahead of Bihar assembly election: ‘For better future'

Hindustan Times06-07-2025
Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday announced that he will contest the upcoming Bihar assembly election, saying that he was doing so for the state's "better future" and to realise his father Ram Vilas Paswan's dreams. Chirag Paswan also expressed support for the domicile policy "for the sake of the youth" of Bihar. (Sanchit Khanna/Hindustan Times)
The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief also expressed support for the introduction of a domicile policy for government jobs in Bihar, the only NDA leader to endorse it.
Addressing a rally in Saran district that borders his Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency, Paswan said, "People have been asking me whether Chirag Paswan will contest the assembly elections. I want to announce from Saran that yes, Chirag Paswan will contest the elections for the sake of a better future of Bihar."
"I will contest the election for the people of Bihar, for my brothers, mothers, for my sisters. We will build a system in Bihar that will truly take the state forward on the path of development. I will realise the dreams of my father and work for 'Bihar first, Bihari first'. I will live and die for Bihar and its people," he added.
He clarified that he supported the domicile policy "for the sake of the youth" of the state, adding that it has been a long-standing demand of job seekers.
Leader of the Opposition and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav has promised a 100 per cent implementation of the domicile policy if the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan comes to power in the state this year.
Chirag Paswan further noted that the domicile policy was introduced in 2006, but was withdrawn by the opposition parties after they came to power. "The RJD and Congress never think about the betterment of the youth of the state. They always mislead people. If they come to power, they will snatch over half of your wealth via inheritance tax," he stated.
The current Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in the state has ruled out the possibility of introducing a domicile policy, saying that such a move would be against the Constitution.
Paswan slammed the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and alleged that the people talking about Bihar's development are the ones who have now ruined the state in the 90s.
The Union minister also reacted to the murder of businessman Gopal Khema, who was allegedly shot dead near his residence in the southern area of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Paswan expressed concerns over the "rising crime" and the "collapse of law and order" in the state, calling for pressure on the state government to bring the perpetrators to justice.
"It is a matter of worry the way crime has risen and law and order has collapsed in Bihar. If such an incident has happened in a posh locality of Patna, then we can only imagine what is happening in villages. It is worrying to see such incidents occur under a government that was known for good governance; then the opposition will have a chance to speak up. Strict action needs to be taken to set a precedent so that such a thing is not repeated," Paswan told reporters.
Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party is part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, along with the Janata Dal (United). While LJP is likely to keep its alliance with the NDA for the upcoming Bihar elections, Paswan has not confirmed anything on the matter.

Delhi High Court denies bail to TRF accused Arsalan Ahenger

The Delhi High Court has declined to grant bail to an alleged operative of The Resistance Front (TRF) terror outfit, citing his 'influence' and a high possibility of tampering with evidence. The court found sufficient material against the accused, Arsalan Feroze Ahenger, stated to be in his early twenties, observing that he posted photos of terrorists and incited people to commit terrorist acts. 'It cannot be said that there is no evidence against the appellant [Mr. Ahenger] that he was closely associated with slain terrorist Mehran Yaseen Shalla or that he has actively participated in the terrorist activities himself,' the court said in its order dated July 7. The court, accordingly, dismissed his appeal against a trial court order from September 2024 that had also denied him bail in the case. Mr. Ahenger was arrested on December 30, 2021. The National Investigation Agency has alleged that, in the backdrop of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, conspiracies were being hatched by various terrorist organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and TRF for targeted attacks on minorities, security forces, political leaders, and other key individuals. Some of these conspiracies were allegedly planned and executed to create unrest, instability, and fear in the Kashmir region and other parts of the country, the agency has said. Mr. Ahenger is alleged to have been associated with Mehran Yaseen Shalla, a TRF/LeT operative who, along with two others, was killed in an encounter on November 24, 2021. Under Shalla's influence, the agency has claimed, Mr. Ahenger became digitally active on various social media platforms, where radical content was disseminated. He is also alleged to have created certain social media groups such as Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind and Shaikoo Naikoo, and multiple Gmail IDs through which radical views were expressed, thereby motivating and radicalising vulnerable youth to join terrorist groups like TRF.

'Dangerous': Supreme Court On Political Parties Seeking Votes On Religion, Caste

Last Updated: The court noted that identity-based politics is practised not only by communal parties but also by regional and caste-based parties The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to hear a petition seeking the de-registration of the Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Musalimeen (AIMIM), and instead advised the petitioner to file a fresh writ raising broader issues concerning electoral reforms and the functioning of political parties. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said the matter should not be limited to any one party or religious group. It noted that identity-based politics is practised not only by communal parties but also by regional and caste-based parties. 'File a petition that doesn't name any particular person/party," Justice Kant told the petitioner's lawyer. 'Let's not confine it to the question of some communal parties. Regional Parties also sometimes do such things. They bank upon caste considerations. That is equally dangerous," he observed. The case was brought by Telangana Shiv Sena President Tirupati Narasimha, who argued that AIMIM's stated goals focus only on the Muslim community and that this violates the principle of secularism. His counsel, Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, said that the party's constitution included aims like promoting Islamic education and teaching Sharia law, which should disqualify it under the Representation of the People Act. 'If you read all OBCs including Muslims are a part. That is what the Constitution also envisages. There are certain rights guaranteed to minorities. So parties manifesto says they will work of rights granted under the Constitution," the Court remarked. Justice Kant further added that there is no bar on religious education or reading religious texts such as the Vedas or the Quran. 'If the ECI raises objection against the teaching of Vedas, Puranas, Shastras, or any granth, please go to the appropriate forum. Law will take care of that. There's nothing wrong in the reading of our old treatise, books or literature or history. Absolutely no prohibition under law," he said. The court made it clear that only acts or declarations that go against the Constitution—such as promoting untouchability—would be grounds for banning a party. 'What is only within the framework of the Constitution may not be objectionable," the judge said. While the plea was withdrawn, Justice Kant acknowledged that the law in this area remains unclear: 'You may be right, there is some grey area." He advised that the new petition should avoid targeting any one party, and instead highlight the need for electoral reforms that apply to all. 'Without indulging any party, you can raise general issues… If need be, Court will take care," he said. Government issues order for the premature release of Sherin Karanavar

The government on Tuesday issued orders for the premature release of Sherin Karanavar, the convict in the high-profile 2009 murder of her father-in-law Bhaskara Karanavar in Chengannur. The Cabinet decision for sentence remission had earlier drawn flak with various quarters accusing the government of having succumbed to external pressures. Sherin, who has been lodged at the Women Prison and Correctional Home in Kannur, was recommended for premature release by the Jail Advisory Committee. Having served over 14 years of her life sentence, she was deemed eligible for premature release. Subsequently, the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services referred the matter to the government, paving the way for her release. The decision was made under Article 161 of the Constitution, which grants the Governor the power to remit sentences. An official order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Bishwanath Sinha, has been forwarded to the State Police Chief, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, and the Superintendent of the Women's Prison in Kannur. Her release is part of a broader recommendation involving 11 inmates proposed for sentence remission. Sherin's prison record has not been without controversy. Her tenure in jail included multiple paroles and disciplinary issues. In February, she was accused of assaulting a fellow inmate, and she had previously been transferred from Poojappura and Viyyur prisons.
