BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV) — The Lowcountry is coming together for another year of fundraising to honor the spirit, love and legacy of a local teen who was killed in 2021.
Dwon 'D.J.' Fields, Jr., was killed on March 5, 2021, in an alleged mistaken identity murder. The 18-year-old Bluffton High football player had just made his college decision days before his death, his family said.
Since then, his family has been having a day to honor his legacy of helping others. This Friday, Feb. 22, more than 50 local businesses are donating 10% of their sales to the scholarship named after the teen: Live Like D.J.
Their goal is to help send a class of 'D.J. Scholars' to college each year and to help support community projects like tradesmen education and supporting first responders. His family said that D.J. was training to become a volunteer paramedic at the time of his passing and had dreams of being a welder.
There will also be drop-off: Bluffton Family Chiropractic, Riverwalk Animal Hospital and the New Balance Factory Store in Tanger 1.
