IRELAND'S BEN HEALY was pipped to second by France's Valentin Paret-Peintre in a sensational sprint finish to stage 16 of the Tour de France.
After a gruelling four hours from Montpellier, Paret-Peintre beat Healy up the final hill of the Mont Ventoux stage to become the first French stage winner at this year's Tour.
Healy, who won the sixth stage and previously wore the overall leader's yellow jersey, made his final charge with 350 metres remaining and led around the hairpin.
But it was home hero Paret-Peintre who rounded him on the last slope to win the stage by a couple of bike lengths, sending the French fans atop the 1910m altitude mountain ecstatic.

Behind Paret-Peintre and Healy, Jonas Vingegaard attacked overall leader Tadej Pogacar relentlessly but the defending champion tracked the Dane all the way up the 15km ascent to extend his lead by two seconds.
Trailing by four minutes and 13 seconds at the start of this stage, Vingegaard attacked with 9 kilometres to climb on Mont Ventoux, whose eery upper reaches resemble a lunar landscape.

He and Pogacar were eclipsed, however, by a frantic fight for the line and the stage win between EF's Healy and Soudal Quick-Step's Paret-Peintre who relieved home hopes on a Tour raced entirely on French soil.
Vingegaard and his Visma team did everything they could to hurt the Team UAE leader Pogacar, but the 26-year-old resisted all they threw at him despite being isolated from his teammates early in the climb which is already etched into Tour folklore after epic past battles.
Chris Froome ran part of the way up during a frantic wait for mechanical assistance, while even the great Eddy Merckx once needed oxygen at the summit.
Tom Simpson died here in 1967 after collapsing on a baking climb but asking to be helped back onto the saddle.
Stage 17 should be one for the sprinters as Tim Merlier hopes to add to his two stage wins and current green jersey Jonathan Milan also targets a second win at the 700m straight run to the finish line at Valence.
The weather however could rewrite the script with 50kph winds forecast along the 170km run.

Irishman told he'd never cycle again after spine injury takes on 640km challenge
Eight years after a life-changing spinal injury, Conor O'Dea is proving what's possible one kilometre at a time as he embarks on a massive cycle - all in the name of charity. When Limerick man Conor was seriously injured in a cycling accident in 2017, he never imagined he'd one day return to one of Ireland's toughest charity bike events. But this August, alongside his carer Paula and a custom-built trike, he's doing precisely that, taking on the Tour de Munster Challenge to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland. 'They told me I wouldn't cycle again, but that was never going to be the end of the story,' says Conor. 'Life didn't end. It just changed.' Now in its 25th year, the Tour de Munster is a four-day, 640km charity cycle through all six counties of Munster. Conor has taken part both before and after his injury and says the event holds deep personal meaning. 'After the accident, getting back on the road with a trike and feeling the wind in my face, it was nearly emotional,' he recalls. 'Tour de Munster was always a goal for me. The camaraderie, the people, the welcome in every town, it's a family.' Since his injury, Conor has raised close to €200,000 for charities including Spinal Injuries Ireland, Millimetre 2 Mountains, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Greenmount Cycling Academy, Down Syndrome Limerick and the Tour de Munster Charitable Foundation. Joining him on the Tour this year will be his Care team, headed by Paula O'Keeffe, Bluebird Care Limerick, who first met Conor at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. 'He was lying in a hospital bed, saying, 'I'm going to get out of this bed. I'm going to walk.' And I just thought, okay, let's try,' she says. Paula hadn't cycled a bike in 15 years, but after meeting Conor, she signed up for her first triathlon. 'He even inspired me to do that,' she laughs. 'We push each other on. I get just as much out of it as he does.' Shels boss hail ‘aggressive' signing as champs raid Premier Division strugglers
Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien has hailed the signing of 'one of the standout players' in the Premier Division this season. The League of Ireland champions have raided Cork City, who are rock bottom of the Premier Division, for their French defender Milan Mbeng. Shels, who are in Champions League action on Wednesday night in Azerbaijan, have now made two signings in a matter of days, with Mbeng joining Ireland Under-21 international Sean Moore. He arrived on Sunday from West Ham on a 'multi-year deal', similar to their latest recruit. The Reds will pay Cork City a fee for the 23-year-old, although neither side disclosed the amount. Mbeng has played 19 times in all competitions during the first half of the 2025 season, and has registered two assists. He said: 'I'm really happy and proud to join this great club. From the first moment I heard about the opportunity from Joey (O'Brien) and Luke (Byrne, technical director), I knew it was something I wanted. 'I can't wait to wear the colours, meet the fans, and give everything I have for the team. I'm ready to work hard and help the club as much as I can at an important time in the season.' He was at Belgian side Charleroi before his move last January to Cork City, where he signed a one-year contract. Shels boss O'Brien had been eager to add to his defence and the arrival of the versatile youngster - Mbeng can play at centre-back or right-back - will strengthen his hand. O'Brien said: 'We're delighted to bring Milan in. He's been one of the standout players in the league since coming in at the start of the season and has shown real quality throughout. 'He's young, ambitious, and fits exactly what we're trying to build here. We're really pleased he's committed to us, and we're looking forward to helping him continue his development. 'He's versatile, exciting, and will bring real quality to the squad as we push into the second half of the season. Credit to everyone behind the scenes for getting it over the line.' And technical director Byrne added: 'We have been watching him for a long time and really think he suits how we play. He's aggressive, athletic and a composed footballer who plays different positions in different systems. 'He's a great age profile and we see massive potential in him.
