PCMC's proposal to build STP on part of Chikhali cemetery land gets state nod

Time of India2 days ago

Pune: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal submitted by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to use 1.75 hectares of land — part of a plot originally reserved for a cemetery in Chikhali — for the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP).
A senior PCMC official stated that the cabinet's approval will enable the civic body to commence work on the STP immediately, which is crucial to prevent untreated sewage from entering the Indrayani River.
According to civic officials, approximately 40% of the land originally designated for the cemetery will now be utilised for the STP, while the remaining portion will be reserved for burial purposes. The proposed STP will have a treatment capacity of 20 million litres per day (MLD).
PCMC has planned four such STPs in the Chikhali area, all along the banks of the Indrayani River.

An official from PCMC's environment department said the proposal was submitted to the state govt earlier this year, and a reservation for the plant was also included in the draft of the revised Development Plan (DP).
"However, now that we have received the state's approval, we will not wait for the DP's final clearance and will start the work immediately," the official said.

The Indrayani River holds religious significance among warkaris (devotees), as it flows past the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Temple in Dehu and the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Temple in Alandi — both major pilgrim sites. Religious groups and devotees have frequently raised concerns about increasing pollution in the river. Environmental activists have also highlighted whenever thick layers of white foam appeared on the river's surface, a sight that has become increasingly common.
During a recent visit to Alandi, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis acknowledged these concerns and stressed the need for a strong network of STPs along the Indrayani River. He assured the state govt is working closely with local bodies to address the issue.

Long-awaited FYJC merit list will now be out on Monday

Pune: The first merit list for admissions to First Year Junior College (FYJC) across the state, expected on Thursday, will now be out on June 30 and students can confirm admissions in the allotted colleges from July 1 to July 7. Apart from problems with the display matrix on the website, the centralised admission process (CAP) committee said that the June 23 govt resolution stating that SC, ST, and OBC reservations would not apply to minority colleges led to last-minute changes and the delay. Mahesh Palkar, director of secondary and higher secondary education, said that after the merit list is generated, the cut-off marks must be on display which was not getting generated. More time sought to clear 194 houses from lake in Avadi

Chennai: Tiruvallur district administration has sought more time from National Green Tribunal (NGT) to complete the eviction of 194 residential encroachments on Vilinjiyambakkam lake in Avadi, citing ongoing resettlement processes. In a detailed status report filed before Southern Zone bench, district collector M Prathap said while 79 encroachments — including 30 commercial structures and 49 houses — were already removed, full eviction is pending as authorities are working on rehabilitating remaining families either in TNUHDB tenements or through allocation of alternative land. The collector's report was filed in response to earlier NGT directions in Aug 2024 and March 2025, when the tribunal took stock of encroachments identified and notices issued to 350 individuals under the Tamil Nadu Protection of Tanks and Eviction of Encroachment Act, 2007. This is the latest development in a case that dates back to 2021, when the NGT first intervened after receiving complaints about the steady shrinkage of the 100-acre lake, once a key groundwater source for Avadi and surrounding areas. The lake, located along the Chennai–Tiruvallur High Road, saw widespread encroachment and poor maintenance by the PWD. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A joint committee formed by the tribunal confirmed sewage discharge into the surplus channel from adjacent residential colonies. Despite directions issued as early as Feb 2022 to fix illegal sewage discharge from the encroachments, action was slow due to resistance from residents and delay by revenue officials in issuing Form III notices. With state elections approaching, little headway is likely in the coming months.

UK F-35B fighter jet to be moved to maintenance hangar

Thiruvananthapuram: British High Commission has said grounded UK F-35B fighter jet will be moved to an MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) hangar after specialist equipment and a team arrive from the UK. In a statement on Thursday, high commission spokesperson said, "We are working to repair UK F-35B at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport as quickly as possible." The aircraft was unable to return to HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier due to adverse weather conditions. Prioritizing safety, the aircraft diverted to Thiruvananthapuram airport, where it landed safely. It subsequently developed an engineering issue whilst on the ground, which precluded its return to the carrier. Engineers from HMS Prince of Wales assessed the aircraft and decided that support of a UK-based engineering team was needed. The statement also said they do not have a forecast for the aircraft being repaired. Throughout this diversion incident, we have worked closely with all Indian authorities, including Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Thiruvananthapuram airport, and are extremely grateful for their support, the statement said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không?
