PCMC's proposal to build STP on part of Chikhali cemetery land gets state nod
Pune: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal submitted by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to use 1.75 hectares of land — part of a plot originally reserved for a cemetery in Chikhali — for the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP).
A senior PCMC official stated that the cabinet's approval will enable the civic body to commence work on the STP immediately, which is crucial to prevent untreated sewage from entering the Indrayani River.
According to civic officials, approximately 40% of the land originally designated for the cemetery will now be utilised for the STP, while the remaining portion will be reserved for burial purposes. The proposed STP will have a treatment capacity of 20 million litres per day (MLD).
PCMC has planned four such STPs in the Chikhali area, all along the banks of the Indrayani River.

An official from PCMC's environment department said the proposal was submitted to the state govt earlier this year, and a reservation for the plant was also included in the draft of the revised Development Plan (DP).
"However, now that we have received the state's approval, we will not wait for the DP's final clearance and will start the work immediately," the official said.

More time sought to clear 194 houses from lake in Avadi
Chennai: Tiruvallur district administration has sought more time from National Green Tribunal (NGT) to complete the eviction of 194 residential encroachments on Vilinjiyambakkam lake in Avadi, citing ongoing resettlement processes. In a detailed status report filed before Southern Zone bench, district collector M Prathap said while 79 encroachments — including 30 commercial structures and 49 houses — were already removed, full eviction is pending as authorities are working on rehabilitating remaining families either in TNUHDB tenements or through allocation of alternative land. The collector's report was filed in response to earlier NGT directions in Aug 2024 and March 2025, when the tribunal took stock of encroachments identified and notices issued to 350 individuals under the Tamil Nadu Protection of Tanks and Eviction of Encroachment Act, 2007. UK F-35B fighter jet to be moved to maintenance hangar
Thiruvananthapuram: British High Commission has said grounded UK F-35B fighter jet will be moved to an MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) hangar after specialist equipment and a team arrive from the UK. In a statement on Thursday, high commission spokesperson said, "We are working to repair UK F-35B at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport as quickly as possible." The aircraft was unable to return to HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier due to adverse weather conditions. Prioritizing safety, the aircraft diverted to Thiruvananthapuram airport, where it landed safely. It subsequently developed an engineering issue whilst on the ground, which precluded its return to the carrier. Engineers from HMS Prince of Wales assessed the aircraft and decided that support of a UK-based engineering team was needed. The statement also said they do not have a forecast for the aircraft being repaired.
