Pressure is mounting on a Welsh Reform Councillor after he made comments about the Pakistani community in a voicemail he left on an ITV journalist's phone.
Councillor Andrew Barry, of Merthyr Tydfil Council, became a Reform councillor two weeks ago having previously served as an independent.
In his short stint in the party the councillor has already come under fire after Nation.Cymru revealed offensive Facebook posts where the Reform member called Puerto Rico a "third world s**t hole" in 2013.
The seemingly inadvertent voicemail was left on a journalist's phone on Wednesday, June 18, ITV Wales reported. In the voicemail Cllr Barry can be heard speaking to an unknown individual about housing and the benefits system.
He said: "They're putting the immigrants in the HMOs. They're everywhere.
"The problem we've got, no-one's interested… (Inaudible).
"Years ago, when there weren't that many Pakistanis…. They were just turned a blind eye to innit… (Inaudible).
"The problem we've got now is tens of thousands of them in cities.
"And their culture is different, like you and me, we're… (Inaudible).... got to protect them (Inaudible).
"Those Pakistanis are tribal. They don't just dislike us, they dislike Sikhs…"
A spokesman from Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council condemned the comments and announced that an investigation would take place.
They said: "As a local authority we are supportive of an inclusive and diverse culture and do not condone any comments that could be deemed offensive to any group.
"Following election all members receive mandatory training on the Councillor Code of Conduct which sets out the expectations of them and includes guidance on equality and respect. A formal investigation process will now commence."
However Reform are supporting their new councillor, claiming that the conversation "has been taken out of context".
A Reform UK spokesman told ITV: "The private conversation involving Councillor Andrew Barry has been taken out of context with the recording only picking up snippets of the discussion.
"They were discussing the failure of multiculturalism and recent warnings about the India-Pakistan conflict spilling onto British streets.
"Past riots in cities like Leicester and Birmingham show these are serious and legitimate concerns.
"Reform UK supports open and honest discussions about integration, community cohesion, and the impact of current policies.
We reject hate or discrimination in any form but will not shy away from addressing difficult issues affecting communities across the UK."
During Nigel Farage's keynote speech in Port Talbot earlier this month he announced that Cllr Barry and fellow Merthyr Tydfil Councillor David Hughes had joined the party.
Cllr Barry said his decision to join Mr Farage's party was because he saw it as "the only opposition in Wales".
He added: "The people making the decisions on those hundreds of thousands of pounds are unelected members of the council."

Last week Reform topped their first Senedd election poll suggesting they'll win 29% of the vote next May. The poll, by Find Out Now, placed Plaid Cymru second with 27% of the vote share and Labour third with 18%.

Former Scots Tory MP Ross Thomson joins Reform UK
Ross Thomson is the latest former Tory to join Nigel Farage's Reform UK. A former Scots Tory MP who has switched to Nigel Farage's anti-immigration party Reform UK has revealed his reasons for joining. Ross Thomson had been a Tory MSP and MP but did not seek re-election in the Aberdeen South seat in 2019. He is now joined Reform UK after being spotted chatting to Reform chair David Bull in the party's latest Scottish promotional video less than a year after backing Russell Findlay for the Conservative leadership in Scotland. Thomson has since explained why he has joined Reform UK. He said: 'I'm pleased to confirm I have joined Reform UK. I did so because only Reform have the courage and answers to the issues facing Scotland and the United Kingdom and Reform are best placed to beat the SNP and sort a Holyrood system that's in desperate need of Reform. ' Nigel Farage leads with conviction, courage, and above all, he listens. He is the only national leader who understands the serious challenges facing the north-east of Scotland — and what it will take to make our region thrive again.' Speculation that Thomson would be the latest Tory to jump ship to Nigel Farage 's right wing party was fueled after appearing in a Reform UK's video of David Bull's trip to Perth. A conversation between the two was captured after Bull said he was in Scotland because Reform is doing 'so well' north of the border. This comes after Thomson vocally backed Russell Findlay in last year's Scottish Tory leadership contest. He wrote on X: "After the hustings in Aberdeen, it's clear that @RussellFindlay1 is the best candidate to lead the @ScotTories. He'll champion our vital oil & gas sector and offer a real, common sense, conservative alternative to the socialist parties at Holyrood. He's also a really nice guy!' Thomson ran into controversy in 2018 after reportedly posting himself sitting on the throne of Saddam Hussein. He was accused of 'trivialising" the dictator's bloody reign after writing: "Another terrific day in Iraq. I was able to channel my inner dictator with a visit to Sadam's [sic] military parade ground The Swords of Qadisiyah (Victory Arch) and then sitting on Saddam 's throne at the British embassy." Thomson is notably a big supporter of Donald Trump and previously dined with the President at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. In April, it was reported that he had secured a new job with one of Trump 's golf resorts. Separately, Trump came into controversy over opening a second golf course in Aberdeen named after his Lewis-born mother, Mary - the 18-hole links MacLeod Course. Farage's £250k 'Robin Hood tax' is a free ride for non-doms, says reader
Do you agree with our readers? Have your say on these MetroTalk topics and more in the comments. Nigel Farage's so-called 'Robin Hood Tax' is an outrageous, Sheriff of Nottingham-style con (Metro, Tue). The Reform UK 'Britannia Card' idea is that non-doms, instead of paying tax annually like the rest of us, make a one-off payment of £250,000, which 'Hood' Farage promises will be used to benefit 'the poor'. According to the Chartered Institute of Taxation (using figures from HMRC) the tax yield from non-doms for the year ending April 5, 2022, averaged out at £120,000 each. So Farage's one-off payment amounts to just over two years of tax at 2021-2022 rates followed by a permanent free ride at the expense of other taxpayers. Public services, already cut to the bone, will get even worse and the poor will suffer to support the wealthy. Paul Johnson, Ilford Sir Keir Starmer has described Palestine Action group throwing paint over fighter planes at RAF Brize Norton (Metro, Tue) as 'disgraceful'. He is right, the lack of security that allowed it to happen is indeed appalling and, as the leader of the government that takes responsibility for it, the buck clearly stops with him. With his new-found humility, the prime minister could perhaps now thank the organisation that exposed the weakness. What if they had been terrorists? Former Tory MP Ross Thomson joins Reform
His move comes after Thomas Kerr, the former leader of the Scottish Tories on Glasgow City Council, defected to Reform in January. On the move to Reform, Mr Thomson, who was MP for Aberdeen South from 2017 to 2019, said: "I am pleased to confirm that I have joined Reform UK. "Only Reform UK have the courage to take on, and the answers to, the big issues facing the North East, Scotland and the United Kingdom. READ MORE: "Nigel Farage leads with conviction, courage, and above all, he listens. He is the only national leader who understands the serious challenges facing the North East of Scotland — and what it will take to make our region thrive again. "Only Reform UK is standing up for our oil and gas industry that has been betrayed by all the establishment parties. The Conservatives introduced the Windfall Tax. Now Labour are doubling down and the SNP cheered them on. "The fishing industry has been similarly sold out. Fishermen have been treated as expendable by Labour, Conservative and the SNP politicians for too long. Only Reform will fight to ensure our waters remain ours — and our fishermen get the support they need to thrive. "In the North East, as in the rest of Scotland, it is now Reform UK that is best placed, and strong enough, to defeat the SNP and finally rid us of this rotten, divisive SNP government that has failed us all. "Reform UK is the no nonsense, common sense, voice Scotland needs. To sort a broken Holyrood system that's in desperate need of change. Scotland needs Reform. That is why I am proud to be part of it."
