Churchill Bros appeal CAG order before Swiss Federal Tribunal, decision awaited
Panaji:
Churchill Brothers FC have clarified that the Swiss Federal Tribunal has rejected their request for a stay on the Court of Arbitration (CAS) operative award but there is no decision yet on their appeal.
Churchill have moved the Swiss Federal Tribunal against the Switzerland-based CAS order that set aside the AIFF appeals committee decision, which had adjudged that the re-registration of Mario Barco by the Varanasi-based club made him an ineligible player. Points were forfeited following a protest by three clubs – Churchill, Namdhari and RKFC -- leaving them lower in the table.
The CAS panel, an independent international body that settles disputes related to sport through arbitration, also ordered the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to 'adjust the points table of the I-League and declare Inter Kashi as champions.'
Churchill were previously declared as champions with the AIFF having a trophy presentation ceremony in Goa.
'After having been notified of the CAS award in the procedure concerning the eligibility of Mario Barco for Inter Kashi, our club filed an appeal before the Swiss Federal Tribunal. As a first step, we requested the Swiss Federal Tribunal for the stay of execution of the CAS Operative Award. Unfortunately, the Swiss Federal Tribunal rejected our request for a stay on the Operative Award.

'Nonetheless, and contrary to what has been wrongly reported by certain media, the Swiss Federal Tribunal did not reject our appeal. In fact, the procedure before the Swiss Federal Tribunal is still ongoing, waiting for notification of the motivated award by CAS and therefore the matter is sub-judice before the Swiss Federal Tribunal,' Churchill said in a statement on Tuesday.
The club said they are 'fully committed to use all legal remedies at its disposal to seek justice and ensure its participation in the coming ISL season.'
According to reports, Churchill had requested the Swiss top court to issue super-provisional and provisional measures, including a suspension of the CAS ruling and, alternatively, permission for the club to participate in the upcoming ISL 2025–26 season.
Reports said the court in its ruling noted that 'it is not possible to conclude, on the basis of the explanations provided by the appellant, that the latter's interests clearly outweigh those of Inter Kashi FC, given that both clubs are at risk of not being able to play in the Indian first division.'
On its website under the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section, CAS said 'judicial recourse to the Swiss Federal Tribunal is allowed on a very limited number of grounds, such as lack of jurisdiction, violation of elementary procedural rules (e.g. violation of the right to a fair hearing) or incompatibility with public policy.'

Angad Cheema emerges leader in round three
Last Updated: Ahmedabad, Aug 7 (PTI) Chandigarh golfer Angad Cheema remained steadfast in his approach, returning a three-under 69, to move into the lead in round three of the Rs 1 crore India Open here on Thursday. Angad, who had rounds of 69 and 67 on the first two days at the Kensville Golf & Country Club, has a three-day aggregate of 11-under 205 going into the final day. Noida golfer Amardeep Malik (69-65-72) carded an even-par 72 in the penultimate round to occupy second position at a total of 10-under 206. Another Chandigarh golfer Karandeep Kochhar (69-70-69), carded a 69 to be placed third. Pune's Udayan Mane, who began the week with a 78, fired a 66 for the second straight day to make a brilliant comeback on the leaderboard. He gained 11 spots on Thursday to be placed tied-fourth at six-under 210 along with Delhi's Arjun Prasad (69). Delhi-based Rakshit Dahiya, the only amateur to make the cut, ended the day in 10th position at two-under 214 following a round of 71. Local golfer Varun Parikh came up with a 72 to be tied 13th at even-par 216. Angad Cheema, who was overnight second being two shots off the lead, made a solid start making pars all through the front-nine. The 35-year-old, winner of the last PGTI event in April this year, began the back-nine with a bogey on the 10th but came roaring back with four birdies, including three from a range of 10 to 15 feet. 'I played a steady round today hitting all greens in regulation. My putter got hot on the back-nine that helped me sink a lot of long putts. That was the big difference between my front-nine and back-nine," said Cheema. 'Playing the qualifying event of The Open in the UK this summer, was a memorable experience and gave me great international exposure as I competed in a strong field at a links course in conditions totally different from what we're used to here in India. I would say it benefitted my game a lot. 'Taking a break from golf during the off-season has also helped me come back fresh and eager to perform well," he added. Amardeep Malik, the overnight leader by two shots, made three birdies and three bogeys on Thursday to drop to second position. Malik is still within touching distance of the lead being just one shot back. Gukesh, Pragg's Alma Mater Vellamal Vidyalaya Wins Gold At FIDE World Schools Team Championship
Last Updated: Velammal Vidyalaya, Chennai, won gold at the 2025 FIDE World Schools Team Chess Championship in Virginia, scoring a perfect 16 points. The school is known for chess prodigies. Velammal Vidyalaya, the Chennai-based school that nurtured chess prodigies like reigning World Champion D Gukesh and Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa, has added another feather to its cap by winning the gold medal at the 2025 FIDE World Schools Team Chess Championship in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. The Mogappair-based institution, long hailed as the heartbeat of Chennai's chess revolution, dominated the eight-round tournament to finish with a perfect score—16 points from eight matches—cementing its reputation as a global chess powerhouse. 'After eight exciting rounds, the 2025 World Schools Team Championship wrapped up today in Alexandria, Virginia," announced FIDE, the international chess federation, in a press release on Thursday. Velammal's team turned in a flawless performance, with all players contributing to the gold-winning campaign. 'Rising above the rest with a perfect score, Velammal MHS School from India claimed the gold medal, winning all eight of their matches," FIDE said. 'They also have a champion like Anand to look up to," said S Velavan, the school's chess coordinator, in a previous interview with PTI. 'Since most children here have a genuine interest in chess, we don't need to push them. They combine their academics and chess extremely well. In fact, chess-playing students tend to excel in academics too," he added. The school follows the '7 to 17' programme—an initiative introduced in 2013 by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa—to train young chess players intensively from early childhood through their teenage years. This systematic approach has paid rich dividends. The school had previously won the FIDE World Schools Team Championship five years in a row and continues to serve as a model for chess education in India. 'Velammal MHS is no stranger to success… so it came as little surprise when the team entered the final round with the top spot already secured," FIDE noted. Sanju Samson Asks RR To Release Him After Serious Differences With Management: Report
Samson is Rajasthan Royals' most capped player in IPL history. He has played 149 matches for the Jaipur-based franchise and scored a total of 4027 runs. Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has formally requested Rajasthan Royals to release him. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Thursday (August 7), there are serious differences between Samson and RR's management, and the cricketer from Kerala, who has played 149 matches in the world's richest franchise cricket league for the Jaipur-based franchise, has formally requested to be traded or released into the auction. 'It is a fact that serious differences have cropped up between Sanju Samson and the Royals management – so much so that the designated captain has formally requested to be traded or released into the auction," the report read. 'Members of Samson's family openly say that he no longer wishes to continue with the Royals. Some current IPL and international players close to him also indicate that his relationship with the franchise has not exactly been the way it used to be," the report added. Samson, who was retained for Rs 18 crore by RR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, played nine matches in the cash-rich league earlier this year and, with the help of one half-century, scored 285 runs. Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported by Times of India that RR is not planning to trade Samson or for that matter any of their players. The franchise reportedly wants Samson to be their 'undisputed" captain. 'RR have decided not to trade Samson or any of their players for now. Samson is very much a part of the Royals set-up and the undisputed captain of the team," a source was quoted as saying by The Times Of India. Samson was first signed by KKR in 2012 but was unused and was subsequently released. He then joined RR and made his IPL debut against Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab). He stayed with the team for four seasons before joining Delhi Capitals with RR suspended for two seasons. At the IPL 2018 auction, RR again picked him at his base price of Rs 18 crore and three years later, he was named as their captain. He celebrated the promotion with a century in his first match as their skipper. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
