Rai revealed in a recent interview that he had even shot with Sanjay and Raj Kiran. But he then changed the cast and reshot the film.
He said during a chat with Siddharth Kannan, ''Yudh' had Sanjay Dutt, I had shot 14 reels with him. He was my best friend and I still have the biggest regards for him. They were the best days of my life. My father was friends with Dutt Sahab. There were issues due to which I had to reshoot the film and then I had to shoot with Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff.'
He added, 'Sanju was not well, he needed a rehab in Florida. Raj Kiran was going through health issues and ended up putting on weight, but he was acting so well. I was concerned about Sanjay Dutt, he needed a rehab, I spoke to his father to get him out of it. I'm not sure how he took it but I think I changed his life. If I had not taken this drastic step, he would not have changed his life.'
When asked bluntly if he removed Sanjay from the film, he said, 'Nikaal diya is an ugly word.
Main kaun hota hu nikaalne wala? I spoke to him every day and asked him that please take care of your health and can I carry on with the film with your kind permission. Dutt sahab got the first cheque of his life from my father Gulshan Rai. We go a long way. When Nargis ji was ill, I was with Sanjay in New York. That film made on Sanju's life, I know what happened.
We've been close family friends. Unfortunately, things didn't work out well between me and Sanju.

He may love me for it, hate me for it. But I had to do it. But, I always wanted to work with him. In 'Tridev', I thought of giving him Naseer's role. I tried approaching him but I got this feeling that Sanjay and his father were not happy with me after what I did with him in 'Yudh'.'
He added further about how close he was to him. 'I have no bad word to speak about boy because he is my best friend. In your young days when you make best friends, you don't get it again.
And I've not managed to make a friend out of an actor. He was the only actor who was my friend. For me it was on my heart and soul. Mereko torture hua.'
Rai also revealed that he thought Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt were upset with him for changing the cast of 'Yudh'. He said, 'I think he was upset. I used to tell him ke yeh karoge toh jhatka lagega usko. Main wrong bhi ho sakta hu. I would be hurt if I was in Sanjay Dutt's place and my father would be hurt.
Woh kuch bole hi nahi. That's the greatness of that man. Dutt sahab ghar aate the, aakhri waqt tak hum baat karte the. Par kaam nahi kar sakte.
Aap ek baar kisi ke saath aadhi picture banaao aur phir change kardo. How do you reach out to that actor again?'
When asked if he will ever work with Sanjay again, he said, 'I met him in the plane, he said, we'll work, how are you' and he spoke well I would love to work with him but he's surrounded by so many directors.
Today he's a bigger man than I am. I'm nobody to go to him now. At that time, he was nobody. Today he's a big man. So, I'm shy to approach him and I don't think I have the right role to approach him. Today a lot of actors do work for money also at this age so you see him in many movies even in a smaller role and that's fine.
'
The director further admitted that he thinks Sanjay is a good actor. He said, 'There's a burning fire that what if we worked together.
Though, when he meets me, he's friendly to me. I was at the crossroads in my career when I was losing my patience. He is a sincere actor and really was serious about doing the film. But sometimes you go through that phase in your life where you are at that age. His mother passed away. He could be emotionally disturbed.
I don't know why he did what he did. He gave me no trouble. He's a gentleman. He's one of the best personalities we have in Bollywood, his walk, his style, his eyes. That's why Munnabhai and all these films happened. It was not by fluke. It happened because he's a good actor.'

After Tridev's blockbuster success, Madhuri Dixit and Sunny Deol never worked together again due to...
In Bollywood, when a pair clicks with audiences, filmmakers rush to recreate the magic. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt did it with Gully Boy and then Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. But not every hit Jodi gets a sequel on screen. Take Sunny Deol and Madhuri Dixit — their pairing in the 1989 blockbuster Tridev was a crowd favourite, yet they never acted together again. Tridev, directed by Rajiv Rai, was packed with star power — Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Sonam, and Sangeeta Bijlani. Its songs like Gali Gali Mein and Tirchi Topiwale became chartbusters. The film swept three Filmfare Awards in 1990 and cemented Sunny and Madhuri's status as a hit pair. But that was also where their on-screen journey ended. Different routes to stardom In the late '80s and early '90s, Sunny Deol was carving a niche as Bollywood's action powerhouse — the 'angry young man' of his era. His focus was on high-voltage action dramas that showcased his physical intensity. Madhuri Dixit, on the other hand, was Bollywood's dancing queen, excelling in romance, comedy, and family entertainers. Their career choices rarely overlapped. While Tridev worked because of its ensemble cast, finding another project that fit both their cinematic strengths proved difficult. Producers preferred to pair Sunny with action-oriented heroines and Madhuri with co-stars like Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt, who matched her romantic and musical style. Rising competition and new alliances The industry at that time was brimming with leading men vying for the top spot. Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt were gaining traction, and Madhuri was flooded with offers opposite them. Naturally, she took on projects that aligned with her career path, while Sunny's action persona drew him elsewhere. The friendship that remained Even if their on-screen pairing was short-lived, their off-screen camaraderie survived. Years later, Sunny and Madhuri appeared together on a dance reality show, where they recreated their Tridev magic by performing to one of its iconic tracks. Some Bollywood pairs leave behind a long filmography; others, just one unforgettable memory. Sunny Deol and Madhuri Dixit's Tridev remains firmly in the latter category.

Filmmaker Rajiv Rai Backs Dhanush On AI-Edited Raanjhanaa Ending: 'Don't Know If That's Legally…'
Dhanush and director Aanand L Rai criticised the AI-altered ending of Raanjhanaa. Filmmaker Rajiv Rai supported Dhanush, questioning the legality of the change. Raanjhanaa AI Ending Controversy: After filmmaker Aanand L Rai, Dhanush expressed his displeasure over the Raanjhanaa edit controversy. He said that the new version 'has stripped the film of its very soul". Amid the debate, Gupt director Rajiv Rai backed Dhanush and echoed his sentiments about the film's AI-altered ending. Expressing his concern, Rai admitted that he wasn't sure if the move was legally right. Rajiv Rai, who has helmed blockbusters such as Tridev, Mohra and Gupt, backed Dhanush. He said, 'Dhanush is right, if the actor is offended or doesn't agree with the script he okayed the end and you go and take an AI and do it that's unfair and I don't. Know if that's legally right I think I should be done in confidence with the actors or they should have shot with him so I don't know the story I think it's okay to change the end." He added, 'I don't know it's a professional thing to do I don't think that would have changed the fate of the film, why do it it's not going to change the fate of the film I mean they could but I don't think here because people have already watched the film." What did Dhanush say about Raanjhanaa ending? Speaking out across his social media on Sunday, Dhanush criticised the altered version and made it clear he was never on board. 'The re-release of 'Raanjhanaa' with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection." He added, 'This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future." What is the Raanjhanaa AI-edit controversy about? Dhanush and Sonam's Raanjhanaa ends on a melancholic note. His character, Kundan, dies after being shot, with Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) by his side. In the new AI version, Kundan survives and opens his eyes in the hospital as Bindiya (Swara Bhasker) and Murari (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) tear up in joy. Eros International, producers of Raanjhanaa, recently decided to alter the film's ending to a 'happier note' using AI. Recently, Eros explicitly rejected Aanand's allegations, calling the altered ending just a 'creative re-imagination" and not a replacement. This didn't sit well with director Aanand L Rai, and other who's who from the film industry, who has slammed Eros for the move. Rai mentioned that the makers didn't consult him before redoing the film's ending via AI. Previously, he had requested the producers to remove his name from the film's credits. Raanjhanaa also starred Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhasker in pivotal roles. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Karisma Kapoor And Sunjay Kapur Took A 'Patch-Up' Trip To Goa, Revealed Kareena: 'They Had Problems'
Last Updated: In 2005, Kareena Kapoor addressed rumours about her sister Karisma Kapoor's troubled marriage with Sunjay Kapur. Back in 2005, rumours were flying thick and fast about Karisma Kapoor's marriage with Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur hitting a rough patch. The couple, who had tied the knot in a high-profile ceremony in 2003, were suddenly the subject of relentless media speculation. At the time, Kareena Kapoor was busy filming a Priyadarshan movie in Chennai when she finally decided to address the whispers around her sister's marriage. Speaking candidly with Rediff, she called out the pressure that public scrutiny had placed on the couple, while insisting that things between Karisma and Sanjay were on the mend. 'So much has been written about it. So many of our well-wishers had predicted doomsday for the marriage. But we knew it can be sorted out, and it was. Come on, which marriage doesn't have problems? But if the entire crisis is up for public debate, it naturally becomes harder to solve the tangle." Kareena said her sister's marriage was 'back on track" and added that Karisma and Sanjay were making an effort to rebuild their relationship. The couple had apparently taken a trip to Goa to try and repair things away from the spotlight, but the media attention followed them even there. Kareena had also shared that their daughter Samaira, who was born in March 2005, played a crucial role in bringing them closer. The couple had moved to their Delhi home soon after. 'Of course it's going to work. My sister and Sanjay [Kapur] love each other. Sure, they had problems. But they were aggravated due to constant media attention. The prying became unbearable when cameras followed them to Goa where they had gone for a patch-up holiday." She added, 'Samaira is a great cementing force between them," says Kareena. 'In fact, Sanjay is playing a polo tournament soon, and the prize has been named after Samaira. It will be the Samaira Trophy. That's how much he loves his daughter." While Karisma and Sanjay eventually parted ways years later, this throwback to Kareena's fiercely protective and heartfelt support for her sister during a tough time offers a glimpse into the pressures celebrity families face behind the scenes. Sunjay) Kapur, the businessman and former husband of Karisma Kapoor, died on 12 June 2025 after a tragic incident during a polo match at Windsor's Guards Polo Club. While playing in the semi-final of the Queen's Cup, he accidentally swallowed a bee, which is believed to have stung him in the mouth or throat. The sting triggered a severe allergic reaction, leading to a fatal heart attack. He was 53 years old at the time.
