Nitish or Shardul? Who will make the cut for India against England

Nitish or Shardul? Who will make the cut for India against England

India Gazettea day ago

London [UK], June 11 (ANI): India faces a severe challenge while trying to figure out its playing combination for the upcoming high-stakes Tests in England. One of Nitish Rddy and Shardul Thakur will be up for a place in the final XI for the first test at Headingley on June 20.
Nitish and Shardul were thrown into the playing XI for India A during both unofficial Tests against England Lions, and both all-rounders reaped mixed results across the two contests.
Considering the way Nitish was used, his role revolved primarily around being a batting all-rounder. He thrived in this role during his maiden Test assignment in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where he played all five Tests.
However, after being exposed to English conditions, Nitish struggled to judge the bounce and often got beaten by the seam movement. On Canterbury's benign pitch, Nitish went to cut the ball too early and too hard in the first innings.
During his second turn, he struck a half-century on the fourth day; however, by that time, the fate of the game was decided, and part-time bowlers were out rolling their arms.
Apart from the bounce, Nitish's main struggle is the seam movement. In Northampton, Nitish toiled hard against Tom Haines, a part-time medium-pace bowler. Nitish was able to play aggressively in Australia, irrespective of the situation, because the ball travelled nicely to his bat.
However, in England, the overcast conditions, the grassy surface and the wobbly seam pose a massive challenge for the 22-year-old. Nitish appeared to be harmless with the ball from Canterbury to Northampton. Batters garnered runs during his over, and his average speed remained at 70mph, which he has to notch up.
On the other hand, Shardul is a seasoned player who has played four of his 11 Tests in England. While Shardul's pace resembled that of Nitish, he was able to extract more seam movement and continued to beat the outside edge of the Lions batter. In Canterbury, he bowled 28 overs, nearly double what Nitish bowled and scalped two wickets.
In 2021, when India led 2-1 in the series in England, Shardul was one of the main reasons behind the tourists' success. He was the fifth bowling option and was effective with the bat. As things stand, Nitish and Shardul will need to work on things before the highly anticipated series begins. (ANI)

South Africa's Rabada and Ngidi spark Australia collapse in WTC final

Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi revived South Africa's hopes of a stunning win in the World Test Championship final as Australia collapsed to 73-7 in their second innings at Lord's on Thursday. Australia captain Pat Cummins had produced a sensational spell of four wickets for one run when South Africa were dismissed for 138 earlier on the second day in reply to Australia's first-innings total of 212. But Proteas fast bowler Rabada struck twice in an over before Ngidi, who took three wickets, and Marco Jansen turned the screw as Australia slumped to 73-7 a lead of 147. Australia might still have too many runs for a raw South Africa batting line-up in a match, which although scheduled for five days, could yet be all over before stumps on the third as bowlers on both sides dominated. Rabada, who had taken 5-51 in Australia's first innings, tormented them again with two wickets in the 11th over. He had opener Usman Khawaja caught behind for six and, two balls later, removed Cameron Green for a duck as Australia wobbled. Green's exit meant the number three had faced just five balls in the match for a total of four runs. Wickets continued to tumble after tea with Ngidi capturing the prize wicket of Steve Smith when he had the batsman lbw for just 13 on review. Beau Webster, who top-scored in Australia's first innings with 72 after South Africa decided not to review an lbw appeal that would have seen him dismissed for eight, also fell lbw to Ngidi. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder took his first wicket of the match when he bowled Travis Head to leave Australia 66-6. And when Cummins was bowled off his pad, backing away to an excellent Ngidi yorker, it meant a remarkable 27 wickets had fallen inside two days' play. Earlier, Cummins finished with figures of 6-28 as he reached 300 career Test wickets. South Africa lost their last five wickets for 12 runs as Cummins ripped through the lower order on his way to a 14th five-wicket haul in 68 Tests and first at Lord's. Only South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham offered meaningful resistance during a fifth-wicket stand of 64. After lunch, Cummins struck four times in a mere 17 balls of devastating pace bowling. South Africa had resumed on Thursday at 43-4, battling to put enough runs on the board. Bavuma, who faced 37 balls for his overnight three not out, changed gears as he struck a superb lofted cover-drive off left-arm quick Mitchell Starc for four and later pulled Cummins for a six. Cummins had his revenge when Bavuma's checked drive was brilliantly caught at cover by a diving Labuschagne. He then dismissed Kyle Verreynne lbw for 13 and, three balls later, held a simple return catch as Jansen fell for a duck. The Australia skipper ended the innings with his 300th Test wicket, Rabada well caught low down at deep square leg by Webster. Cummins received a standing ovation as he led his side off the field. That reception was a marked contrast to the boos that echoed round Lord's two years ago after Cummins refused to withdraw an appeal following Alex Carey's controversial stumping of Jonny Bairstow during an Ashes Test. jdg/smg/jc

'Don't Bowl Jasprit Bumrah...': Legend's Warning To Gautam Gambhir And Shubman Gill

Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah should be used sparingly and only as a wicket-taking option, feels former India captain Sourav Ganguly. 'A fit Jasprit Bumrah' will be vital for India's hopes of winning their first Test series in England after 18 years, feels legendary captain Sourav Ganguly. England tour is Bumrah's first international assignment since the tour of Australia that ended on a painful note for the fast bowler as he ended up injuring his back midway through the fifth and final Test. The setback pushed him to the sidelines for several months and he ended up missing India's victorious campaign at the 2025 Champions Trophy. Bumrah was the standout performer for India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, finishing as the leading wicket-taker of the tour. 'Hoping Bumrah remains fit for the five Test matches," Ganguly told Revsportz. 'Even if it means giving him a break after the 2nd Test match and then getting him back for the 4th and 5th, because a fit Bumrah will be very important." India head coach Gautam Gambhir has already confirmed that Bumrah will play three of the five Tests to manage his workload and to avoid a repeat of the injury setback he suffered in Australia. Ganguly though advises that Bumrah must be used judiciously and India's new Test captain Shubman Gill deploy the senior pacer for short spells. 'Shubman Gill needs to understand not to bowl Bumrah into the ground. Use him as a wicket-taker, use him in short spells, so that he remains fit for five Test matches. And make sure the others (chip in) – young Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, has got tremendous fitness and ability, and is a warhorse," Ganguly said. 'Make sure Bumrah is used as a wicket-taker. He has got to understand that, and I am sure Gautam (Gambhir) is there, and the senior players there, they will guide him," he added. The first Test of the series gets underway from June 20 in Leeds.
