Pro-Palestinian demonstrators clash with security guards at Columbia University
Pro- Palestinian protestors wearing masks and keffiyehs clashed with security guards Wednesday after staging a protest inside Columbia University 's main library.
Videos and photos shared on social media showed dozens of protesters pushing past campus security officers and racing into the building. The group then hung Palestinian flags and other banners on bookshelves in an ornate reading room. Some also appeared to have scrawled 'Columbia will burn' across framed pictures.
Other videos showed campus security officers barring another group of protesters from entering the library, with both sides shoving to try and force the other group aside.
University officials in a statement that the protest is so far isolated to one room in the library. They say protesters were asked for identification and ordered to disperse, but none immediately complied.
'They have been told that failure to comply will result in violations of our rules and policies and possible arrest,' officials said, noting that the disruption comes as students are studying and preparing for final exams.
'These disruptions of our campus and academic activities will not be tolerated. Individuals found to be in violation of University Rules and policies will face disciplinary consequences,' officials added.
Mayor Eric Adams said police were monitoring the situation and in communication with the university. A police department said officers were aware of the disturbance and had been stationed nearby ready to intervene if requested.
Following threats by the Trump administration to its federal funding, Columbia in March announced sweeping policy changes.
Among them, a ban on students wearing masks to conceal their identities and a rule that those protesting on campus must present their identification when asked. The school also said it had hired new public safety officers empowered to make arrests on campus.
Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a pro-Palestinian student group, said it had occupied part of Butler Library because it believed the university profited from 'imperialist violence.'
'Repression breeds resistance — if Columbia escalates repression, the people will continue to escalate disruptions on this campus," the group wrote online.

A stranger who killed a sleeping teenage boy in Florida lived in an apartment reminiscent of a horror movie as his former landlord said he always had an off feeling about him. Kyrill Kehl, 26, killed Dominic Ferrell, 17, in his 34th floor apartment in the Icon Brickell building in Miami while he sleept after the killer bypassed security and got on the elevator with other residents on June 8. Kehl started on the 47th floor, trying doors until he reached Ferrell's on the 34th and found it open. Upon entering, he stabbed the sleeping teen to death before eventually falling hundreds of feet to his death from a different building when he fled. His former landlord, Christian, said after seeing the news that he always had a weird feeling about his tenant, and even predicted that Kehl would end up making headlines. 'I remember specifically leaving the building and saying: "I have a feeling we haven't heard the last of this dude." And I said: "Watch, this motherf**ker is gonna be on the news one day,"' he told WSVN. 'I had this weird inkling feeling of like, Dahmer. I literally had this thought like: "Oh my God, we're dealing with Dahmer here." Jeffrey Dahmer vibes.' Kehl was Christian and his business partner's first tenant and the landlord said the young man lived in absolute filth and hid an automatic weapon in his apartment. The killer's fridge was filled with couch cushion-sized chunks of meat that were rotting and covered in maggots. The apartment also had a strong odor, he said. His former landlord, Christian (pictured), said he always had a weird feeling about his tenant. Kehl was Christian and his business partner's first tenant and the landlord said the young man lived in absolute filth. 'It was like something out of a horror movie,' he said 'How could anybody live in here with this smell? It smells like something is rotting,' Christian told the outlet. 'It was like something out of a horror movie.' Christian also recalled an encounter with the strange young man once inside the apartment. As the landlord approach the closet, Kehl jumped in front of him ad told him: 'Don't go in there.' The contents of the closet are unknown. The landlord feels guilt for not being able to prevent the tragedy, but he said his tenant never did anything illegal or that would have prompted him or his business partner to call the authorities. 'I'm still in disbelief, because I feel like, had we done something, but there's no way,' he told the outlet. 'There's no telling whether you know for sure you're in the presence of a murderer.' Surveillance footage that has not been released to the public allegedly showed Kehl seen sprinting from the apartment after the murder and several knives were found at the scene, investigators said. Ferrell was found dead in his bed by his father, Jon Ferrell, who was also asleep at the time of the attack. The boy was visiting his father against his mother's wishes that day, as she had gotten a temporary restraining order against Jon, according to the Miami Herald. The apartment where Ferrell was killed was a short-term rental. 'Consistent with Dominic's extraordinary empathy and our loving bond, he chose to join me on the night of this horrific event. Of course, my wife and I will cooperate with law enforcement as we get to the bottom of this senseless murder,' Jon said in a statement. Police said they found Kehl's body at the construction site the next morning after following a trail of blood from the scene of Farrell's slaying. Ahead of Father's Day, Jon encouraged parents to 'hug your children and appreciate every precious moment you have with them.' He also revealed the day of the murder, he and his son were discussing what they're plans were for Father's Day and had planned a family golf game.
