US Treasury chief says extension of tariff relief possible for some

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday that an extended pause on higher tariff rates is possible for some countries as a deadline approaches for dozens of economies to face steeper levies.
"It will be up to President (Donald) Trump, but I believe that if someone is negotiating in good faith, that an extension will be possible," Bessent told lawmakers. Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs on most trading partners in April but halted higher rates on many countries until early July, pending ongoing negotiations.

Trump says Los Angeles 'safe and sound' for two nights after protests

Los Angeles "was safe and sound for the last two nights," U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday morning, as he hailed troops for helping to restore order in the city after days of anti-deportation protests. "Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job," Trump said on Truth Social, adding that without the military the city "would be a crime scene like we haven't seen in years." AFP

US embassy in Jerusalem restricts staff movements

The U.S. embassy in Jerusalem announced Thursday it was restricting staff movements, after President Donald Trump said U.S. personnel were being moved from the potentially "dangerous" Middle East. "Due to the increased regional tensions, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (area)... Jerusalem and Be'er Sheva areas until further notice," the embassy said in a statement. Traveling between those locations, to Tel Aviv's airport, or down the highway through the West Bank to the Jordanian border would be permitted. AFP
