2025 US Open: dates, schedule, seeds, how to watch on TV
Here is what you need to know about the year's fourth and final major of the year:
* The 145th edition of the U.S. Open will run from August 24 to September 7.
* The U.S. Open is held in Flushing Meadows, New York.
* The three main showcourts are the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and Grandstand.
* Arthur Ashe Stadium (capacity: 23,771) is named after the only Black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. He was also a prominent human rights activist.
* Louis Armstrong Stadium (capacity: 14,053) was named after jazz great Armstrong who lived a few blocks from the venue until he died in 1971. It was opened during the 2018 event to replace the 1978 stadium of the same name and has a retractable roof like the main showcourt.
* Grandstand (capacity: 8,125) was first used at the U.S. Open on August 29, 2016, the opening day of that year's tournament.
* The top-ranked players automatically enter the main draw, with 32 seeds announced prior to the draw, to ensure they do not meet in the early rounds. Seedings are based on world rankings determined by the points players collect on the tour.
* Italian Jannik Sinner, who won his fourth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July, is the men's world number one. He is chasing back-to-back U.S. Open titles.
* Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, a three-times major winner, is the top-ranked women's player and the defending champion.
* Novak Djokovic will resume his quest for a record-extending 25th men's Grand Slam singles title, while Spanish world number two and 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz chases a sixth major crown.
* Organisers also hand out wildcards to local hopes and notable players who have dropped down the rankings.
* A new format in the mixed doubles is being introduced this year, with the event featuring many big-name singles players as it will be taking place over two days in the week before the main competition starts. Former singles champions Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu are among those who have teamed up.

Rays don't solve Justin Verlander but edge Giants again
August 17 - Brandon Lowe capped a two-run eighth inning with an RBI single, five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a seven-hitter and the Rays recorded a second straight one-run road win over the San Francisco Giants, 2-1 on Saturday night despite a turn-back-the-clock performance by Justin Verlander. Down 1-0 entering the eighth but with the Giants having turned the game over to their bullpen, the Rays got a break when No. 9 hitter Nick Fortes was hit by a pitch from right-hander Jose Butto (3-3) with two outs. Chandler Simpson and Yandy Diaz followed with singles, the latter plating pinch runner Tristan Gray with the tying run. Lowe then greeted left-hander Matt Gage with a single to left field, scoring Simpson with the eventual difference-maker. Edwin Uceta (9-2), who pitched a scoreless seventh, was credited with his second win in two nights. Bryan Baker threw a 1-2-3 eighth before Pete Fairbanks pitched around a leadoff single and stolen base by Jung Hoo Lee in the ninth for his 22nd save. Verlander, who is 1-9 this season, did not get a decision. He worked the first seven innings, leaving with a 1-0 lead after allowing just two hits and no walks. He struck out eight, one off his season high. The scoreless effort was the 81st of Verlander's 20-year career. He had been the winning pitcher in 62 of his previous 80 such games, including a 1-0 record with the Giants when his only win in 21 starts came after five shutout innings in a 9-3 win at Atlanta in July. For the hard-luck 42-year-old, it was the 12th time this season in which he's gotten two or fewer runs of support. For seven innings, it appeared the Giants had given Verlander the only run needed for a second win when Christian Koss, San Francisco's new third baseman in the wake of injuries to Matt Chapman and Casey Schmitt, singled home Willy Adames with two outs in the sixth. The hit came off Uceta, Tampa Bay's third pitcher, after Rays starter Adrian Houser had matched zeroes with Verlander for five innings. The right-hander allowed four hits while striking out six with no walks. Diaz and Lowe had two hits apiece for the Rays, who won a third straight despite not having an extra-base blow among their six hits. Lee had two hits and Koss collected a single and a double, the only extra-base hit of the game, for the Giants, who lost their seventh straight, all at home. --Field Level Media

Dodgers take advantage of Padres' mistakes to win again
August 17 - The Los Angeles Dodgers turned six walks in the first two innings into five runs and moved back into sole possession of first place in the National League West with a 6-0 victory over the visiting San Diego Padres on Saturday. Left-hander Blake Snell (3-1) went six scoreless innings against his former club as the Dodgers won consecutive games following a four-game losing streak. Los Angeles has not won three consecutive since a four-game winning streak June 29-July 3. Dylan Cease (5-11) struggled with his command as the Padres right-hander gave up five runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings. San Diego center fielder Jackson Merrill dropped a fly ball at the warning track with two outs in the second inning that led to the two unearned runs for the Dodgers. San Diego, which moved into sole possession of first place earlier in the week, has lost seven times in nine games against the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers took advantage of a wild Cease from the outset. Shoei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Will Smith walked in succession to open the bottom of the first. Teoscar Hernandez had a sacrifice fly for a run and Michael Conforto added a two-run single. Ohtani and Smith also walked in the second inning then scored for a 5-0 lead when Merrill dropped Freddie Freeman's fly ball to the warning track in right-center. Los Angeles moved in front 6-0 in the fifth inning when Hernandez hit a home run to center off right-hander David Morgan, his 20th of the season. Hernandez has 20 home runs in each of the last seven full seasons, not counting the shortened 2020 pandemic campaign. In his first appearance against the Padres since winning a National League Cy Young Award with them in 2023, Snell gave up five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Three Dodgers relievers combined to give up one hit over three scoreless innings to close out the victory. --Field Level Media
