The driverless car race is coming back to Abu Dhabi with a huge cash prize

Start your engines – well, your algorithms – because the world's most advanced driverless car showdown is hitting Yas Marina Circuit once again this November.
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is returning on Friday November 15 and it's not just about the glory. This year's prize pool clocks in at a jaw-dropping US$2.25 million (that's over Dhs8 million).
If you missed last year's debut, let us catch you up: over 10,000 fans packed the stands while more than a million viewers tuned in from around the globe to watch AI-driven race cars hit top speeds without a human in sight. A2RL is where high-octane motorsport meets cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence – and it's only getting bigger.
Now entering its second season, A2RL is welcoming top research teams from ten countries, with France and Japan joining the line-up alongside returning powerhouses from the USA, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy and the UAE. The cars? They're built on the Super Formula SF23 chassis – the fastest open-wheel race car outside of Formula 1 – only now, they're entirely autonomous.
The upgraded EAV-24, built right here in the UAE, comes loaded with next-gen sensors, smarter control systems and eco-conscious materials. It can hit speeds of up to 300km/h, all with zero drivers on board.
But it's not just about track time. New for 2025 is A2RL SIM-Sprint, a global virtual racing series that takes the action online. It gives teams the chance to develop and refine their algorithms year-round and in all kinds of conditions – ideal for testing those pesky edge cases that don't come up often in real life but could be make-or-break moments in a race.
In the future, the SIM Sprint will open to a broader crowd, from indie developers to motorsport-loving gamers. Think of it as a talent pipeline from virtual track to real-world race day.
H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary General of ATRC, said: 'With A2RL, we're not just testing autonomous technology, we're accelerating its evolution in the most demanding conditions possible. It's a showcase of engineering excellence, but more importantly, a platform for the future of mobility. From high-speed racing to real-world applications, we are demonstrating what's possible when nations invest in deep tech innovation and challenge the world to think faster, build smarter, and compete responsibly.'
Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, added: 'By combining the physical thrill of racing with the precision of virtual testing, we're enabling the world's best minds to push the boundaries of AI. This year's expanded league reflects Abu Dhabi's commitment to challenge-driven innovation, where real-world impact is engineered at speed and scale.'
Friday November 15, Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi. a2rl.io.

Justin Rose clinches dramatic St. Jude FedEx Championship win in playoff thriller

Justin Rose (Eng) continued his fine form and made up a three-shot deficit over the last five holes against his fellow countryman Tommy Fleetwood, and then made two birdies in a three-hole playoff against US Open champion J.J. Spaun (US) to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind on the PGA Tour. Rose delivered another impressive performance, closing with a 3 under 67 for his 24th victory worldwide that puts him back into the top 10 in the OWGR at age 45 and secures his spot in another Ryder Cup for Team Europe. Perhaps lost in Rose's remarkable rally was another disappointment for Dubai-based Fleetwood seeking his first PGA Tour title, especially when his 35-foot birdie on the 12th was the first of three birdies in a four-hole stretch that gave him a two-shot lead over the rest with just three holes to play. But he had to scramble for par on hole 16 and was between clubs on the 17th, hit a poor shot and missed his par attempt from seven feet for bogey. Needing a birdie on the 18th to have a chance, he drove into a bunker. Fleetwood shot 69 and finished one shot out of the play-off alongside Scottie Scheffler, who had to settle for a 67 but kept up his remarkable streak of form this season. Fleetwood's statistics make for remarkable reading, and his time must come soon: the 34-year-old has now made 161 PGA Tour starts without a win. He has six runner-up finishes, six third-place finishes, 29 top fives and 42 top 10s. He has eight wins worldwide, but none on American soil. 'There's a lot of positives to take, as much as I won't feel like that right now. I'm just going to look at what I feel like I could have done and how close it was,' Fleetwood said. Bud Cauley was on the bubble to finish in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup when he holed a bunker shot for birdie on the 17th hole and locked up his spot for the second round of the FedEx Cup playoffs next week outside Baltimore. Rickie Fowler, who missed the postseason last year, shot 69 to tie for sixth and advance to the BMW Championship. Others who moved into the top 50 were Kurt Kitayama, Jhonattan Vegas and J.T. Poston. The top 50 are also assured of being in all the $20 million signature events next year. There was plenty of movement around the top 50 bubble: Jordan Spieth never got on track this week, finished with a shot in the water on the 18th and shot 68 to tie for 38th to finish 54th. Chris Kirk was inside the top 50 until he hit into the water on the 15th for bogey and failed to birdie the par-5 16th. A closing birdie left him at No. 51. The real drama this week was at the top of the leaderboard, particularly with Rose. He played in the final group with Fleetwood and was three shots behind when Rose hit a 6-iron to just inside 15 feet for birdie at the par-3 14th. He followed with two more short birdies, and then poured in a 15-footer on the 17th for his fourth in a row. 'This is going to be a fun one for us to celebrate,' Rose said. In the FedEx Cup Rankings, Rose moves to fourth, Spaun to third, Scheffler remains in the lead, Fleetwood to ninth, with Rory McIlroy, who took the week off, remaining in second. Results (Par 70, 7,288 Yards) J. Rose (Eng) 64, 66, 67, 67. 264. JJ. Spaun (USA) 68, 66. 65, 65. 264. S. Scheffler (USA) 67, 66, 65, 67. 265. T. Fleetwood (ENG) 63, 64, 69. 69. 265.

Car shipper says US tariff haze still affecting auto trade flows

Europe's car exporters are still struggling with uncertainty over U.S. tariffs despite last month's trade deal, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the operator of one of the world's largest car-carrier fleets, told Reuters on Tuesday. The U.S. and European Union struck a trade deal in late July that saw U.S. import tariffs on most goods from Europe, including cars, set at 15%. Cars had initially faced a 27.5% levy after U.S. President Donald Trump hiked tariffs this year. However, the new 15% rate has not yet been implemented for cars, meaning that Wallenius customers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo Cars still face the higher rate. The absence of an executive order from Trump lowering the autos tariff has left the industry holding its breath for potential last-minute changes. "So far we actually do not know exactly what the tariff level will be. Our customers do not know either, so it is too early to say what they'll do," Wallenius CEO Lasse Kristoffersen said following the company's quarterly results. While carmakers raced earlier this year to ship cars to the U.S. ahead of the tariff hike to 27.5%, the opposite happened at the start of the second quarter, Kristoffersen said. "We saw that they held more back in the start of the second quarter but that volumes increased throughout the quarter," he said. (Reporting by Marie Mannes. Editing by Terje Solsvik and Mark Potter)
