PETALING JAYA : Have you ever stepped into a space and, ever so subtly, felt like you've been transported to a different era? The mood shifts, the atmosphere draws you in, and even the aroma in the air seems to lift you up.
Walking into Latibule Coffee in Ara Damansara – a Japanese kissaten-inspired coffeehouse with retro-modern finishes and oriental jazz playing softly in the background – you might find yourself thinking: this is the closest you'll ever get to time travel.
The brainchild of Shum E Yern, Latibule Coffee takes its dark roast coffee brewing very seriously – promising a caffeinated experience unlike any other. The menu here is limited, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Shum, together with his partner Samuel Hau, knows exactly what they're doing, offering customers – especially coffee and tea lovers – a curated experience that prioritises taste, comfort, and a touch of aromatic pizzazz.
At Latibule Coffee, the star is their dark roast – a deliberate nod to the traditional kissaten style. 'If you go to Japan, all the kissaten serve dark roast kaw kaw,' Shum enthused, adding the cafe's vibe was inspired by his travels to Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
Instead of a generic dark roast, Shum and his team worked closely with their roaster to create a unique profile: just dark enough to develop rich coffee oils without burning the beans.
It's this attention to detail that led to one of their most distinct offerings, the Slippery Espresso, an intense shot of special dark roast with a velvety layer of oil.
The Slippery Espresso is definitely a must-try for coffee lovers. (Dinesh Kumar Maganathan @ FMT Lifestyle)
'Most people don't like espresso because it's too intense or sour,' Shum explained. 'But if you try this, maybe you can accept it. When you drink, it's not sharp. It's smooth.'
Like the kissaten of post-war Japan – quiet retreats for writers and thinkers – Latibule Coffee offers a similar sense of calm. Fittingly, latibule means 'sanctuary' in Latin.
Tables for two, some tucked into cosy corners, invite guests to unwind. Small signs on each table gently ask patrons to lower their voices, so everyone can enjoy the music and the atmosphere.

Beyond the slippery espresso, Latibule Coffee's Sibeh Dirty Latte is a must-try for avid coffee drinkers. Unlike the conventional version, this uses freeze-distilled sweet milk, giving it a slightly yoghurty texture.
When poured into a shot of Slippery Espresso, you get a cold latte that's smooth, creamy, and almost dessert-like – perfect for the hot weather.
While the staple oolong and white teas are available, Latibule Coffee also offers something truly unique: three types of tea made from coffee plant by-products – coffee leaf, coffee blossom, and coffee cascara, which is the dried husk of the coffee cherry.
The Japanese drip coffee has a smoky profile and no bitter aftertaste. (Dinesh Kumar Maganathan @ FMT Lifestyle)
For those who enjoy earthy, slightly herbaceous flavours with floral notes and a hint of caramel, the Coffee Leaf Tea is worth a try – though it's definitely an acquired taste.
The Coffee Blossom Tea, on the other hand, is pale in colour and boasts a sweeter, lighter, and more floral profile that, strangely enough, evokes a sense of lighthearted happiness.
Feeling peckish? The Chocolate Terrine is a rich, velvety mix of fudge, cake, and mousse. It's pure indulgence in a tiny loaf. Chocolate lovers, you might want to keep this one all to yourself.
The Egg Puddings are also a treat, with a jiggly texture reminiscent of tau foo fah. The original flavour is already delicious, but you can take it up a notch with the rum and raisin version – an indulgent way to wind down after a long day at work.
Ultimately, if you're looking to enjoy a rich cuppa with Canto-pop and jazz playing in the background – perhaps while reading a book and soaking in a moment of solitude – Latibule Coffee is the place to be.

24 evacuees from Iran arrive safely in Malaysia
The evacuees, who were on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH781, touched down at KLIA Terminal 1 at 11.03pm yesterday. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : A total of 24 individuals including 17 Malaysians who were evacuated from Iran following the escalating conflict in the country have returned safely home. The evacuees, who were on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH781, touched down at KLIA Terminal 1 at 11.03pm yesterday. They were welcomed by the foreign ministry's deputy secretary-general (bilateral affairs) Ahmad Rozian Abd Ghani. The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean national. Malaysia's ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, who led the group, told the media they had to travel about 1,000km by land to exit Tehran. 'We chose a route away from the source of the attacks, which were coming from the west, so we headed east. Alhamdulillah, we received strong cooperation from the Turkmenistan government, which allowed foreign nationals to cross the border,' he said. He added that around 12 Malaysians were still in Iran, and that Wisma Putra was closely monitoring their situation to ensure their safety. According to a statement from Wisma Putra, all 24 individuals crossed the Iran–Turkmenistan border on June 21 and boarded Turkmenistan Airlines flight T5 647 on June 22 to Bangkok, Thailand, before continuing their journey to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. The evacuation, coordinated by the Malaysian embassy in Tehran, involved a 1,120km land journey to the Iran-Turkmenistan border. The Malaysian embassies in Ashgabat and Bangkok facilitated flight arrangements from Ashgabat to Malaysia. The foreign ministry expressed its appreciation to the governments of Iran, Turkmenistan, and Thailand for their cooperation which enabled the smooth return home for the Malaysians. 'This evacuation process reflects the Malaysian government's continued commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of its citizens, in line with the core value of ihsan (compassion) under the Malaysia Madani framework,' the statement said. Wisma Putra also confirmed that the Malaysian embassy in Ashgabat had assisted in the repatriation of Bruneian citizens from Turkmenistan to their home country. It said the involvement of a Singaporean citizen in the evacuation and the assistance extended to Brunei nationals reflected Malaysia's readiness to offer support to citizens of fellow Asean nations, in the spirit of regional solidarity.

KLIA's Aerotrain service to resume July 1, says Loke
Two trains will be in service during the day time, and one between midnight and 5am. SEPANG : KLIA's new and improved Aerotrain service will start operating from 10am on July 1, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said today. He said the trains have entered the final phase of testing, which will be completed soon. 'If all goes smoothly as planned, we will resume the Aerotrain service on July 1,' he told a press conference at KLIA's Terminal 1 here today. The Aerotrain service was suspended in March 2023 for maintenance and upgrading work after several breakdowns. It had been expected to resume in the second quarter of this year. The service had been the backbone of KLIA's internal transport network since 1998. Loke said three trains, each with a maximum capacity of 270 passengers, will be in operation between KLIA Terminal 1 and the satellite terminal, which is mainly used for international arrivals and departures. Two trains will be in operation throughout the day but only one train will be in service between midnight and 5am. He said the bus services, launched after the breakdown of the Aerotrain service in 2023, would continue until further notice. Loke admitted that the relaunch of the Aerotrain service had missed the deadline previously announced by airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the transport ministry, but said this was due to the ministry's strict safety regulations. 'The safety of the passengers comes first, so we did not allow the service to resume until we were satisfied with the safety results,' he said.

HIGHLIGHT's 2025 Kuala Lumpur concert moved to earlier time
KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — K-pop group HIGHLIGHT will perform in Malaysia on Saturday, September 27, at Idea Live Arena as part of their highly anticipated RIDE OR DIE tour, as previously announced on May 19. The concert time has been moved to an earlier slot of 4.30pm, from the originally scheduled 8.00pm, according to an update shared today by promoter GME International on their official X (formerly Twitter) account. The RIDE OR DIE tour will also include stops in Seoul, Taipei, Macau, Manila, Tokyo, and Bangkok, before concluding in Kuala Lumpur. HIGHLIGHT, currently comprising four members — Yoon Doo-joon, Yang Yo-seob, Lee Gi-kwang, and Son Dong-woon — first captured fans' hearts under their original name, BEAST, debuting in 2009 under Cube Entertainment. The group was initially a six-member band before the departure of Jang Hyun-seung. In 2016, the remaining members left their agency and subsequently parted ways with the BEAST name. The group rebranded as HIGHLIGHT the following year, signing with Around Us Entertainment. Yong Jun-hyung later departed from the group in 2019. Since their re-debut as HIGHLIGHT, they have continued to grow in popularity, releasing several hit songs including It's Still Beautiful, Take Care, BODY, Switch On, and their latest single, Chains. This will mark the group's third visit to Malaysia and their second as HIGHLIGHT, following their previous performance at the K-Wave Music Festival in 2017, held at Surf Beach, Sunway Lagoon. For details about HIGHLIGHT's upcoming visit to Malaysia and ticket sales, fans are advised to check the group's official social media channels or GME International's X account.
