Koneru Humpy On Why She Lost To Divya Deshmukh In Chess WC: 'I Couldn't Get...'

Last Updated: Koneru Humpy cited 'lack of energy' for her loss to Divya Deshmukh in the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup Final. Deshmukh won 2.5-1.5, becoming the first Indian champion. Koneru Humpy has blamed her FIDE Women's Chess World Cup Final loss to the younger and lower-ranked Divya Deshmukh on 'lack of energy' in the last matches. Humpy said she took more and more pressure and Deshmukh pounced on the opportunity with her 'solid' game with hardly any mistakes. Deshmukh became the first Indian to win the title in Georgia. She beat Humpy with a score of 2.5-1.5. The final went into the tie-breaks before the first Rapid game ended in a draw. Divya scored a brilliant win with the Black pieces in the second to clinch it. She also got promoted to Grandmaster with the win. 'I didn't show my energy levels," Humpy told Firstpost. ' Divya played a solid classical game. I couldn't get much out of that. When it came to tie break. The first game was a chance to take the initiative but I missed it out. Later on when it was equal, I started taking the pressure and went with the wrong choices. It was the lack of energy towards the end. It was one of the reasons I couldn't perform up to the mark. Divya utilised the opportunity," she added. Still, the spectacle was surreal. Thousands of people turned up on live streams around the world to catch a rare all-India final, another proof of India's growing stronghold in the sport. 'Having two Indians was something unexpected," Humpy admitted. 'That too in a knockout format. It is very common for players to be tied in a ranking or classical event. In knockouts, from two different groups – two Indians coming to the finals. Before that we had four Indians in the quarterfinals – That itself is a remarkable achievement. Indian chess is in a great position and thanks to the support of all the officials," she said. She also agreed that India was growing to be a powerhouse in chess. 'Yes, definitely, because that also reflects in the rankings at the world level. Specifically, if we see in the men's circuit, we have all our top players in the world rankings. So that clearly says that we are leading." view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 23:36 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Not Kohli Or Rohit! This Indian Cricketer Is Behind Irfan Pathan's Sacking From IPL Commentary

Last Updated: Irfan Pathan clarified his removal from the IPL broadcast team was due to criticism of Hardik Pandya, not Kohli or Sharma, stressing on his support for Baroda players. Before the start of IPL 2025, there was much speculation about players being unhappy with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan's on-air criticism. Reports suggested that Pathan was removed from the IPL broadcast team after he spoke critically about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the Australia Test series in December 2024. However, Irfan has now revealed that the reality was different — it wasn't Kohli or Rohit who had an issue with his remarks, but another senior member of the Indian team setup: Hardik Pandya. In an interview with The Lallantop, Irfan clarified that his comments about Pandya were not overly harsh given his role as a broadcaster. 'If I'm criticising you in 7 matches out of 14, I'm still being lenient. That is our job as broadcaster," he explained in the interview. Irfan insisted there was no personal rivalry between them and emphasised that he has always supported cricketers from Baroda. 'There is no rivalry. All the Baroda players who have come after me — Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya or Hardik Pandya — none of them can say that Irfan-Yusuf did not help them." To highlight his past support for Hardik, Irfan recalled an incident from 2012 when he recommended the young all-rounder to Sunrisers Hyderabad. According to Irfan, VVS Laxman later admitted that he regretted not listening to Irfan's advice at the time. 'VVS Laxman admitted on Star Sports, that he was at fault for not listening to me, and not picking Hardik in 2012. If he had picked him then, Hardik would have played for Hyderabad," Pathan revealed. Irfan also pointed out that he has defended Hardik in the past, even during moments of heavy public criticism. He mentioned the backlash Hardik faced from Mumbai Indians fans after Rohit Sharma was removed from captaincy ahead of IPL 2024. 'I took a stand then and said nothing bad should be said about the player," Irfan recalled. While Irfan maintained that criticism is a natural part of a player's career — citing legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar, who also faced scrutiny — he drew a line at personal attacks. 'There is nothing wrong in criticising the player, if you play, you have to go through that. It happened with Sunil Gavaskar, the great Sachin Tendulkar… they never made anyone feel, they were bigger than the game. But I'm against the derogatory words used against Pandya." he said. Carlo Ancelottis son wins his first Copa Libertadores match as Botafogo coach

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 15 (AP) Davide Ancelotti, the son of Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, has won his first Copa Libertadores match as the new manager of defending champion Botafogo. The 35-year-old Ancelotti joined the Brazilian club in July for his first experience as a full-time coach. Botafogo beat Ecuador's Liga de Quito 1-0 at Nilton Santos Stadium in the first leg of a round-of-16 tie late Thursday. Striker Artur scored after 14 seconds. For official purposes, assistant Cláudio Cacapa signed the match-related documents as Botafogo's coach. Ancelotti did not have full authorization from CONMEBOL to fill that role for a bureaucratic reason, according to Botafogo. Last month, Ancelotti was contracted through 2026 after Botafogo owner John Textor fired Renato Paiva following the team's round-of-16 elimination at the Club World Cup. Botafogo is the Brazilian and Copa Libertadores titles holder. (AP) UNG view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 22:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
