640 pugilists gear up for Junior (U-17) Boys & Girls Nationals in Rohtak
Both the Junior Boys and Junior Girls competitions will feature 13 weight categories each, ranging from 44-46 kg to 80+ kg. The Services Sports Control Board will look to defend their title from the 5th Boys' Nationals, while Haryana enter as the defending champions in the Girls' category.
"The Junior National Championship is a crucial platform for young boxers to showcase their skills in front of national selectors and coaches. It plays a key role in helping BFI identify and nurture future talent. I am happy to see strong participation from all teams as we look to discover the next generation of Indian boxing stars. Many of these young boxers will represent India in the 2032 & 2036 Olympic Games, and therefore, this championship is of great importance," said Boxing Federation of India president-chairperson, Interim Committee, Ajay Singh.
"This championship also comes before the Asian Youth Games in October this year, where, for the first time, Boxing has been included. The winners from here will go on to represent India at these Asian Games, where 14 medals will be up for grabs. With robust systems already in place, BFI is committed to supporting these young athletes in realising their full potential," he added.
The gold and silver medallists of the REC Combined Talent Hunt (Junior Boys and Girls) held in October 2024 would be eligible to participate in the National Championships under the REC banner, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria of being born between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
The championships will be conducted as per the World Boxing Technical & Competitions Rules, wherein each bout will consist of three rounds of two minutes each, with a minute's rest in between. A ten-points-must scoring system shall be followed.
Indian boxing has been making huge strides towards becoming a top boxing nation across all levels. While the seniors clinched eight medals, including two gold, at the recently-concluded Thailand International, the juniors (U-15 & U-17) collected 43 medals–including 15 gold, six silver, and 22 bronze–at the inaugural Asian U-15 & U-17 Championships, finishing second in the overall table and displaying the strength of a strong youth programme.

Our focus will be on playing an aggressive and disciplined brand of hockey and we believe this team has the capability to compete strongly against the best in Asia,' India chief coach Harendra Singh said. 'The Women's Asia Cup is not only a prestigious continental championship but also a direct qualifying event for the World Cup. Rahane predicts Gill and Abhishek to open the batting for India in Asia Cup
New Delhi: With Shubman Gill returning to the squad for the 2025 Men's T20 Asia Cup, the focus has shifted to what would be India's opening combination for the tournament. Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane feels that in his opinion, Gill and Abhishek Sharma are likely to open the batting. On a personal note, Rahane said he would like Sanju Samson to retain his position as the opener. Gill's return to the India T20I team as the vice-captain means that Samson may be relegated to the back-up opening role. In that case, Jitesh Sharma might slot in the middle-order and take up keeping duties. 'As a team, I think they have a very good problem to solve for the opening pair. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have done really well in that slot. But Shubman is back in the team. I'm sure he is most likely to open with Abhishek Sharma.' 'Personally, I would like to see Sanju Samson in the team because he has done really well - a very confident guy, very good team man, and I feel that is a very important thing. Sanju is a great team man, but that's a very good problem to have for the team management.' 'My opinion is that Sanju Samson will sit out. Ajay Singh re-elected as Boxing Federation president for third consecutive term
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) on Thursday concluded its keenly contested elections with Ajay Singh emerging victorious in the Presidential race. In a one-sided fight, he secured 40 votes against challenger Jaslal Pradhan's 26, reaffirming the support of state associations and extending his leadership of Indian elections, conducted with participation from 34 state associations representing 66 votes, also decided the other key office bearers – Secretary General, Treasurer, and Vice the contest for Secretary General, Pramod Kumar of Uttar Pradesh, who is known for his tireless efforts in ensuring all the domestic national championships take place smoothly, triumphed over Digvijay Singh, the former treasurer, polling 36 votes to 30. The Treasurer's position was a three-way fight which saw Pon Baskaran secure the post with 28 votes, defeating Anil Kumar Bohidar and R. Gopu. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Singh said, 'This victory is a reaffirmation of the trust and faith my colleagues from across the country have placed in me. It is not just a mandate, but a recognition of the relentless work we have done together to take Indian boxing forward.
