Beloved actor best known for his starring role in classic Aussie comedy Mother and Son dies at age 81

Daily Mail24-07-2025
Veteran Australian actor Henri Szeps has died at age 81, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Best known for his beloved role in the classic ABC 80s sitcom Mother and Son, Szeps also had a career on stage and screen stretching back sixty years.
Born in Switzerland in 1943 to Polish parents, Henri arrived in Australia in the early 1950s, amid a surge of immigrants fleeing a Europe devastated by World War II.
Henri's family settled in Sydney and he got his start as a performer at the Ensemble on the city's north shore.
Known for his versatility, Henri's early roles included parts in such classic Aussie series like Homicide (1964-1977) and the much-loved children's adventure-drama Skippy (1968-1970).

However, it was a part in the notorious 'gay' stage play by US playwright Mart Crowley, The Boys in the Band in 1968, that wowed critics and made Henri a name to watch.
According to an obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald on Thursday, the production was also a personal milestone for Henri.
It was backstage during the show's run where he met his wife, Mary Ann Severne.
The couple were married in 1969.
Henri also made a splash in Channel 10's 'adult' soap Number 96, which had fans gasping at its rough language and nudity when it launched in 1976.
Still, it was his role in the ABC hit Mother and Son that brought Henri a huge and loving audience.
Debuting in 1984, the series centred on Ruth Cracknell's character Maggie Beare, and her sons, the devoted but impatient Arthur (Garry MacDonald) and his rascally and selfish elder brother, Robert (Szeps).
As he entered mid-career Henri won plaudits playing Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt in Kennedy Miller's landmark drama Vietnam (1987).
He also appeared in other much-loved series including Carson's Law, A Country Practice, Rafferty's Rules, G.P. and All Saints.
In 2021 Henri Szeps was diagnosed with early onset dementia.
In a heartbreaking program for the ABC series Just Between Us, he spoke about how his condition had affected his family alongside his son Josh.
'Dad has dementia, technically Alzheimer's,' Josh, an ABC broadcaster, said in the documentary.
'For us, it's about understanding how to support him and, most of all, support mum in her support of him, so that we can sustain a normal life for all of us as long as humanly as possible.'
The filmmakers recorded Henri watching an episode of Mother and Son in the family home.
'I don't know,' he said when asked about his condition. 'I refuse to hide behind it, it's there. All I can say is, all's well that ends well.'
Josh said his father was still a 'barrel of laughs' who 'makes fun of himself constantly' after his dementia caused habitual forgetfulness.
Henri added: 'Everybody around me might know that it's going, the brain's going, but I don't. I still think I'm right on the ball!'
He emphasised his son's point about staying positive in regard to his condition and said the best way to cope is to 'take it as it is and love it'.
The actor died surrounded by his family, after moving into a residential care facility in 2023.
Henri is survived by his wife Severne and their sons, Josh and Amos.

Shocking X-rated truth behind one of sport's most-iconic photos having been praised for its ‘sportsmanship' for 20 YEARS

FREDDIE FLINTOFF'S famous photo of him bending down alongside Brett Lee has become synonymous with good sportsmanship. The photo was taken during the second test of the 2005 Ashes Series, with England hero Flintoff bending down and touching the shoulder of the Aussie following his side's crushing last-over defeat. 3 3 The match is remembered as one of cricket 's greatest Tests as it marked the start of a real England push to reclaim the Ashes after 16 years. But the real truth behind that image - plastered across newspapers the world over and one of the most recognisable photos in modern cricket - has now come to light. Indeed, Flintoff's gesture was certainly not as kind as it might have seemed to those watching from afar. Instead, according to Lee and former England captain Michael Atherton, he was delivering a brutal private sledge. Flintoff, now 47, crouched down and said: "That's one-all, you Aussie b******." Speaking to the Daily Mail, Lee recalls: "That might have been thrown in there. "He's just a guy that has just given his all, who's been great for world cricket, and his sportsmanship is just second to none. "He's an absolute beauty." England would go on to win the Ashes for the first time in 16 years following the Edgbaston triumph - with the two-run victory that day still the tightest finish in Ashes history. And despite the defeat on the day, Lee, 48, rates it as the best match he played in his career. He added: "He's that lovable character. "Not real lovable though when he's bowling 95 miles an hour at your ribs, I can testify to that. "Probably one of the most special moments in my career was that 2005 Ashes series and certainly that epic battle that we had at Edgbaston. "Even though we lost, I'd still put that down as one of my favourite games, purely the way it was played and the sportsmanship that was on show." The next Ashes series takes place Down Under, with England eyeing a first victory in 10 years and first in Australia since 2010.

General Hospital is bringing back fan-favorite star seven years after he was killed

General Hospital is bringing back their beloved star, Ryan Paevey, seven years after his character was dramatically killed off. The actor, 40, first joined the the long-running ABC soap in 2013 as Detective Nathan West, quickly becoming a fan favorite. His character's tragic death in 2018 devastated viewers, making news of his return all the more shocking. Exactly how the Torrance native will fit back into Port Charles remains a mystery, at this time. The actor confirmed to Deadline that Executive Producer Frank Valentini reached out to him with an unexpected text, sparking conversations about a possible comeback. 'We talked a bit and he asked would I consider returning for awhile, talking story, floated different story ideas involving different time commitments of me, and I thought if we're going to do this we should really do it and surprise the fans with a meaty storyline,' Paevey said. He continued: 'I was surprised by my excitement for a homecoming and reuniting with familiar faces after seven years. I still have my last call sheet from my final taping day on January 18, 2018, tacked up in my home office.' Filming begins this week, and viewers can expect to see him back on screens in September. Speculation about Paevey's return had already been mounting, especially after Kelly Thiebaud, who played Nathan's sister Britt, reappeared on the soap in July. The timing of both comebacks has fueled theories about a potential family-centered storyline. While some fans are hopeful Nathan might be resurrected, others believe Paevey could take on an entirely new role in classic soap fashion. Since leaving General Hospital, Paevey has built a successful career in TV movies. After breaking out in Hallmark's Unleashing Mr. Darcy in 2016, he went on to star in more than a dozen romantic comedies for the network, including Two Tickets to Paradise in 2022. Most recently, he appeared in Fourth Down and Love. He has also notched credits outside of Hallmark, with appearances on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Games People Play. The news comes just a week after the death of General Hospital star, Tristan Rogers, following a battle with lung cancer. Since 1980, Rogers had been portraying international spy-turned-Port Charles D.A. Robert Scorpio on General Hospital - a role Soodak said 'meant everything to him.' While he did not appear on every episode, he still was a long-standing presence on the series with 1461 episodes under his belt. 'He loved being Scorpio and he created that role from nothing. He was supposed to work a day and he ended up making it into something huge. He was just a genuinely loyal, kind human being and he loved his family,' his manager, Meryl Soodak told ABC 7 News.
