Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii plays down Sione Tuipulotu rivalry ahead of Wallabies and British and Irish Lions first Test

Wallabies gun Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has avoided throwing fuel on the fire ahead of a possible spicy rematch with British and Irish Lions centre Sione Tuipulotu in Saturday's opening Test in Brisbane
The star league recruit and the Melbourne-raised Scotland captain had to be separated in a skirmish in their first meeting at Murrayfield last November.
Suaalii laid a massive tackle on his opposite but then stayed down after injuring his arm.
Tuipulotu then sledged the rookie Wallaby, who jumped back to his feet and fired back, warning "I will see you next time" before departing the field for treatment on his wrist.
Since then 28-year-old Tuipulotu was cautioned by Wallabies analyst Eoin Toolan, who he knows from his Melbourne Rebels days, to stop talking about the incident as Suaalii was "raring to go".
With Tuipulotu favoured to start against the Wallabies, Suaalii downplayed hostilities between the pair.
"I feel like there's been a lot of talk around that moment but at the end of the day it's just a game of footy," the 21-year-old said on Monday in Brisbane.
"I'm a big believer that whatever's said on the field stays on the field.
"I'm just focused on what I can do for the team, that's it. I'm not going to speak on it, to be fair.
"I always focus on myself first before I put my energy into someone else, and obviously fans want to see a rivalry and all that but at the end of the day, it's a team sport and I'm just trying to do the best for the team."
While Suaalii was reticent to bait his rival, his Wallabies teammate Will Skelton happily chimed in that he could see some fireworks happening at Lang Park.
"Yeah, that's what you want, no?" the giant lock said.
"You want our 12s going against their 12s, you want our 13s going against their 13s — I think no matter what, it's going to be a physical battle and we're up for the challenge."
Suaalii rated his involvement in the Lions series above his sole State of Origin experience, and said it was the major incentive for his code switch.
"Yeah, that was probably the biggest carrot for myself," he said.
"These are the biggest games, they happen every 12 years, so that was probably the biggest thing coming across.
"I was nine, I remember watching it in my house, all the young kids sitting on the floor and I just remember being real close to the TV, watching it.
"Something so special as a kid sparks you to do something great in your life so to be a part of the squad, it's amazing."
Suaalii's stand-out memory of the 2013 series, which Australia lost, was the dramatic Test debut of another code-hopper Israel Folau, who scored two tries in the opening match.
"He did kill it in that 2013 series and that was a big reason it was a dream of mine to play the Lions, because I remember watching him, Kurtley Beale, all these different players do their thing in the game and it sparked something for myself," he said.

NRL 2025: Lachlan Galvin set to play halfback for the Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are confident Lachlan Galvin has enough time to forge a potent halves combination with Matt Burton following confirmation that the mid-season recruit will make his first start at halfback for the club on Saturday night. The intrigue around Galvin's role in the team and how that's affected other players in the spine has been a major talking point ever since he arrived at Belmore. It hasn't helped that he's started two games at five-eighth and two on the bench, while Galvin – who turned 20 this week – was dropped from the 17 last week after initially being named on the bench for the match against the Cowboys. But the No.7 jersey is now his with Toby Sexton dropped from the halves for the game against the Dragons. It'll give Galvin two months to build his combination with Burton, who came up with some big plays in attack to help them sneak past the Cowboys. Lachlan Galvin was left off the bench for the Bulldogs last week, but he will start on Saturday at halfback. Picture:'It's up to the boys getting around him and giving him the confidence to do what he does best, and that's just play footy,' Bulldogs utility Jaeman Salmon said. 'The game will come if he plays his normal game, and we just have to give him the confidence to do that. 'We've still got a third of the season left and I think that's enough time to build a combination leading into the finals. 'As long as we all get around him, I'm sure he'll be fine.' Salmon said coach Cameron Ciraldo made the announcement at a 'stock standard' team meeting on Tuesday morning and the obsession around Canterbury's spine wasn't a factor internally. 'I think that's what the media portrayed. You guys have been waiting for it, but in here, we haven't been waiting for anything,' he said. 'Whoever the best player to do that job is going to play that position, and that's with all our positions. 'No one is ever safe. Whatever pick has been made is what's best for the team. Galvin has two months to work on his combinations before the finals start. Picture: NRL Photos 'Toby is a good mate of all of ours, but that's just part of the game. It's hard for him but we're all going to be there to support him. 'You wouldn't have even noticed that there's been stuff going on in the media about Lachie. 'He's just a young kid who wants to play footy. He's been handling it really well. He just wants to learn, and that's why we like him. He's just been a sponge since he got here and he just wants to soak it all up.' Edge forward Jacob Preston said he felt for Sexton and was confident that he and Galvin would gel on the right side in attack. The Bulldogs haven't been at their clinical best in attack since Galvin arrived, but the end of the State of Origin period should help as they spend the next eight weeks ensuring they're in the best position to contend for a title. 'Ever since he got here, we've been doing work. And we work all different halves,' Preston said. 'If we've ever had to change sides as well, we're making sure we get that done as well. The combinations are ready to go. ''Galvo' is incredibly talented, so he can create plenty of opportunities and we just have to react to that.'

Sammy Conquers All aims for Sydney success with a strategic inside barrier

A string of wide draws has cost Sammy Conquers All a couple of city wins but he can amend that when he heads back to Sydney this week. Coffs Harbour trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith ventured to Randwick with the three-year-old back in February for a TAB Highway where he charged home to finish a close third behind Lisztomania and Exit Fee. After a sixth to Tribecca Star in the NRRA Country Championship Qualifier at Lismore, Sammy Conquers All had three runs in Queensland where he finished fifth at the Gold Coast in the QTIS Jewel and two fourths at Eagle Farm. 'He is racing really well without a lot of luck with barrier draws,' said Mayfield-Smith. 'He drew wide in the Highway and had to go back which didn't suit but he got home quite strong to run third. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'He is a QTIS horses so he ran in a few of those in Brisbane and he kept drawing near the outside and going back on tracks where you had to be up there near the speed. 'He ran very good races but was quite unlucky.' After a short break, Sammy Conquers All drew well and raced outside the leader to score a smart win from Aye Aye Skipper with Brock Ryan in the saddle. The draw has again favoured the gelding when he came up with gate 1 in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1400m) with Ryan to again ride. 'He's a better chaser and doesn't like to get to the front too soon as he tends to wander,' he said. 'The longer he is looking at backsides, the better he will chase. 'From the inside draw, he should be just behind the speed and have a last crack at them.' Closer to home, Mayfield-Smith will saddle up Monte Tiana in the Winning Edge Presentations Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m) at Grafton where she has drawn barrier 11. The four-year-old mare appreciated a better track when fourth at Coffs Harbour last start and Mayfield-Smith expects her to make her presence felt again. 'She drew wide the other day and probably got back a bit too far but she motored to the line on a track that was playing to horses on the inside,' he said. 'Forget her two runs before that because she is just hopeless on wet ground. 'The gate doesn't worry me that much. She should settle about midfield and she likes to come into it down the outside. 'Her work has been extremely good and I expect her to run well.'

Fresh Knights disgrace paints ugly picture as club great Alex McKinnon snubbed

The Knights have had a week to forget but somehow it keeps getting worse. After being walloped by the Storm on the weekend, news emerged on Monday that coach Adam O'Brien will be moved on at the end of the year unless the team played finals footy in 2025 – a prospect that is highly unlikely. And then came the dagger blow for the Newcastle faithful, that superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga had grown fed up at the club and was sussing out options elsewhere. But the absolute shambles the club is currently in couldn't have been more perfectly captured than by one moment on Saturday that flew under the radar. Former Knights enforcer Alex McKinnon decided to go to support his side against the Storm on the weekend. However, he wasn't given a special seat or even free entry, even though he became a quadriplegic from a tackle gone wrong while playing for the red and blue in 2014. Instead, he coughed up for a general admission ticket and sat on the hill as the Knights lost 32-14. But despite all he gave for the club and the suffering he endured, it wasn't paying his way or the lacklustre performance on Saturday that upset him, it was the insensitivity in the organisation of what unfolded on the field before kick-off. According to Code Sports, McKinnon was made aware by a distraught fan that out on the field were ambassadors of Stronger Together – a spinal support organisation that provides support for those affected by spinal cord injuries. Incredibly not only was McKinnon not asked or informed about this, but it was scheduled against the Storm – the club that the former Knight was playing against on the afternoon of the incident that would change his life forever. And according to veteran journalist David Riccio, it is moments like that which show just how out of touch the club and its CEO Phil Gardner are. 'It illustrates how out of touch Gardener is with what makes Newcastle great. It's history. It's passion. It's people,' Riccio wrote in an article for Code Sports. 'Of all the home games this season that the Knights could have chosen, they selected a home game against the Melbourne Storm to promote a spinal cord charity. 'The Knights have had eight previous home games and still have three more to go.' Members of the Newcastle staff reportedly contacted McKinnon to personally apologise for what they described as 'an oversight'. The Knights will return to McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face the rampaging Warriors.
