Uche Ikpeazu: I've won a personal battle now it's time to win a team one with St Johnstone

The Courier10-05-2025

Completing a full game feels like a personal mission accomplished for St Johnstone striker, Uche Ikpeazu.
And now the powerful comeback forward has his sights set on a collective great escape.
After five operations and the best part of a year sidelined with knee problems, Ikpeazu only needed two substitute appearances before being ready to start and finish last weekend's Premiership clash with Kilmarnock.
Ikpeazu has suffered no ill effects from a gruelling afternoon in the early summer sun at McDiarmid Park.
And he's ready for another one, when Ross County are the opponents for a win or bust encounter.
'I feel I have already fought a battle this season,' said the 30-year-old. 'Sleepless nights, worry, stress, when, how, why.
'So many questions.
'To come back in the condition I've come back in, for me, is a winning battle for myself.
'I'm not going to lie, I'm proud of myself.
'Because I had to go into a really dark place and work extremely hard to get myself out of this situation.
'In that gym early morning, late in the evening, sometimes the afternoon.
'No days off. If I wasn't happy, I'd be back in the gym to do more knee strength.
'But no one cares about your story until you win.
'That's why I really want to help the team to an amazing story.'
Ikpeazu hitting the goal trail to inspire Saints on their survival mission is the sort of story football can throw up at this time of year.
'That's exactly what I'm holding onto,' he said. I want to be that guy who makes the difference.
'Playing 90 minutes was a personal achievement after being out for so long.
'I left that pitch grateful for that. But at the same time, I was sad. I was really upset. I was disappointed. I should have scored.
'But I'm getting in the right positions.
'If I'm finding the right positions, the goal is going to come.
'But that's just my mentality, my personality. I asked myself: 'Where did I go wrong? Why didn't I score?'
'I've got to take accountability. I always want to do better and be better. But we move forward.
'We have to fight.
'I am not thinking about going down. We are still in there. We need to beat Ross County.'
Ikpeazu stressed that, whatever footballing faults can be highlighted, the Perth squad doesn't lack desire to fight for St Johnstone.
'As a player, if you're with a team, you're not trying to do things wrong,' he said.
'A lack of attitude is different. But that's not the case here.
'It's about encouraging because a lot of boys have lost confidence.
'You're bottom of the league with three games to go. It takes its toll.
'It's human nature to feel the way some of those boys feel. We all have doubts.
'I'd always rather someone put the arm around me than shout or scream.'

Greg Kiltie set for Kilmarnock return as trio of Saints find new clubs

The 28-year-old is set to join Caolan Boyd-Munce and Richard Taylor who also have found new clubs since departing. Greg Kiltie is on the verge of a return to Kilmarnock. The St Mirren midfielder – who has two years remaining on his Buddies contract – is believed to be close to agreeing a deal which would see him go back to Rugby Park. ‌ New Killie boss Stuart Kettlewell is keen on the 28-year-old who joined the Buddies four years ago. ‌ Kiltie was closing in on 150 appearances in the black-and-white stripes and has scored 11 goals during his spell in Paisley. He has been part of three top-six Premiership finishes with Saints and helped the club end their 37-year European football exile. However, ankle surgery last summer saw him miss the Buddies ' UEFA Conference League matches with Iceland's FC Valur and SK Brann of Norway. Kiltie and his partner became parents last summer and they live in Kilmarnock. And losing the midfielder – given his vast top-flight experience – would be a setback for Saints who were eyeing at least six new signings this summer before this development. Meanwhile, two former Buddies have sealed moves south of the border. ‌ Centre-back Richard Taylor has joined Bolton Wanderers while Northern Irish international Caolan Boyd-Munce has signed on the dotted line at their Sky Bet League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers. The popular duo enjoyed a memorable spell at the SMiSA Stadium but will now be going head-to-head. Having previously worked with Chairboys manager Mike Dodds at Birmingham City when he was a youngster, reuniting played a major factor in Boyd-Munce's move, according to his new boss. ‌ He said: 'Caolan was a fantastic young talent at Birmingham and I'm really excited to work with him again and develop his game further now that he's picked up great experience in senior football in the last few years. 'He's a really energetic player and suits the way we want to play and we're looking forward to bringing him into the squad for the new season.' Taylor arrives in Greater Manchester to join a Wanderers outfit desperate to return to the Championship. ‌ The 24-year-old is the fourth new face at Toughsheet Community Stadium this summer and has signed a three-year deal. The defender said: 'Joining Bolton Wanderers is a massive opportunity for me and I'm absolutely buzzing to be here. 'You can feel the ambition around the place and I want to be a big part of taking this historic club forward. ‌ 'I've heard all about the incredible support at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and the thought of playing in front of that crowd, helping to make it a real fortress for us, is something special. 'I'm a defender who will put my body on the line and I'm ready to bring that commitment, that desire to be solid at the back, and help us achieve our goals. 'I can't wait to pull on that white shirt and give everything for Bolton Wanderers.' ‌ There have been no further developments regarding keeper Zach Hemming's future. The 25-year-old keeper has enjoyed 18 months of the last two seasons on loan with Saints and is entering the final year of his contract at Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough. Hemming is a Buddies target but Sky Bet League Two outfit Chesterfield are believed to have bid £150,000 for his services. Boro are currently without a manager after Michael Carrick was axed. The Saints squad return to pre-season training on Thursday and will head to Spain for a training camp after a friendly with League Two Dumbarton on Saturday, June 28.

Kilmarnock set to make Greg Kiltie second summer signing with winger returning from St Mirren

The 28-year-old ex-Killie player is set to retun to Rugby Park Greg Kiltie is set for a return to Kilmarnock. The 28-year-old winger will become Stuart Kettlewell's second signing since taking over as the club's new manager. ‌ Irvine-born Kiltie came up through the Killie youth ranks before playing over 130 times for the Rugby Park club prior to making the move to Paisley four years ago. ‌ He started just 14 league games for the Buddies last term, having been an integral part of Stephen Robinson's squad the previous campaign but he looks set to complete a return to Ayrshire. With close to 250 Scottish Premiership games under his belt, he adds much needed experience to the flanks following the departures of both Danny Armstrong and Fraser Murray. Kiltie is the second new signing of the summer after former Livingston captain Jamie Brandon penned a two-year deal last week. The 27-year-old can operate at either full-back or central midfield and captained the Lions to a return to the Premiership at the first attempt.

Jack van Poortvliet handed Lions call-up

Van Poortvliet has won 15 caps since making his senior international debut on England's tour of Australia in 2022. The 24-year-old started for Leicester Tigers in the Premiership final at the weekend and was promptly named as one of three scrum-halves in Steve Borthwick's latest training camp. Ben Spencer, a newly-crowned Premiership champion with Bath, and Raffi Quirke of Sale Sharks were the other two options in Borthwick's 36-man group. Will Porter and Charlie Bracken are among the scrum-halves to have been in training earlier this summer, with Harry Randall injured. As far as other candidates should the Lions require a permanent replacement for Gibson-Park, Ben White is still involved in Toulon's Top 14 campaign. He, George Horne and the versatile Jamie Dobie were named as part of the Scotland squad that will travel to take on the Maori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa this summer. This call-up for Van Poortvliet is no guarantee that he will make the trip to Australia or remain with the Lions beyond this weekend. Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour both spent last week training with the Lions in Portugal before returning to the England fold as players from Bath, Leicester and Leinster were reintegrated into Farrell's cohort.
