Jets stun City to inch closer to ALM finals berth

Yahoo12-03-2025

Plucky Newcastle have overcome a lengthy lightning delay and an attacking barrage from Melbourne City to spring a 1-0 upset win and achieve their longest unbeaten run in 20 years.
Just three days after drawing 1-1 with A-League Men leaders Auckland FC, the Jets drew within six points of the top-six on Wednesday, going seven games unbeaten (four wins and three draws) after a match that had to be paused for more than an hour because of the weather.
The victory, Newcastle's first over City at AAMI Park in 10 years, also came amid speculation over coach Rob Stanton's long-term future.

Wasteful City dominated shots 27-5 and corners 14-0, with nine shots on target to Newcastle's one - Lachie Rose's goal in the 69th minute - while the brilliant Jets goalkeeper Noah James made seven saves.
"The idea's to defend better up front so we don't have to defend like that," Stanton
"But when you play quality teams like Melbourne City - well-resourced, quality players, well-coached by Aurelio (Vidmar), you know that you're gonna have to be really well there.
"So we obviously did more work on it this week.
"As the game went on, I knew that the boys are fit, I knew that they're resilient and I knew they're in a good space."
Third-placed City (34 points) burned a golden opportunity to leapfrog Western United (35) and cut the gap to leaders Auckland (41) to four points.
"Classic dominant performance, and get countered on the other end, and lose the game 1-0," City coach Aurelio Vidmar said.
"That hasn't happened to us for a long time."
Newcastle started strongly but the game was stopped in the 14th minute due to lightning over AAMI Park.
City, who had 11 shots to Newcastle's one for the half, seized control of the game after the restart over an hour later and Steven Ugarkovic forced James into a save in the 28th minute.
In the 37th minute, Max Caputo also brought a great diving stop from James, and less than a minute later, he also batted away a fierce strike from Mathew Leckie.
The busy keeper denied Caputo, then Nathaniel Atkinson in the 49th minute, before Caputo shot over the bar.
Atkinson appeared certain to score in the 66th but Phillip Cancar dived brilliantly in front of his goal-bound shot.
Two minutes later, James denied Trewin's glancing header superbly and Harry Politidis turned the rebound wide from point-blank range.

Then, Newcastle took the ball from end-to-end before Thomas Aquilina slipped through Rose, who turned on the ball and rifled it past Patrick Beach and into the top corner.
Newcastle return to action against Western United at home on Sunday, while City don't play again until after the international break.
"Yes, we should be disappointed, because this game we should have won," Vidmar said.
"So we just roll up our sleeves and get back to work on Saturday and slowly start building for our game against Sydney."

Jets Fans Monitoring Allen Lazard's Status After Aaron Rodgers Signing

Jets Fans Monitoring Allen Lazard's Status After Aaron Rodgers Signing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Aaron Rodgers era of New York Jets football is nearly indistinguishable from the history it promised to change. Rodgers was traded to an organization with the sport's longest playoff drought, no long-term prospects under center, and a history of defunct decision-makers doing their best with poor ownership. Advertisement Head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas were fired before the 2024 season ended. New York still doesn't have a franchise quarterback, and for all of the chaos, urgency, and optimism, it has yet to make the playoffs since 2010, when Aaron Rodgers won the Super Bowl and 2025 starter Justin Fields was 11 years old. There is no shortage of gripes to be had with Rodgers in his two-year stint. His Achilles injury obviously wasn't his fault. But being the de facto general manager and adding several ineffective Green Bay Packers was. One such move was signing receiver Allen Lazard, a signing made before Rodgers signed but with the clear implication that he'd be recruiting him to East Rutherford. After two seasons and 841 yards, he might be on the move again. Jets fans are monitoring a potential trade after Rodgers signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, hoping to recoup draft capital for the veteran receiver. Advertisement "Allen Lazard is a reliable veteran wide receiver. The Iowa State product has been a valuable target during his seven-year career, but could be looking for a new team soon," Bryce Lazenby wrote for Sporting News. "The reason Lazard could be on the outs in New York is because his old friend, Aaron Rodgers, finally has a new team. Lazard has always been on the same team as Rodgers, and the duo have undeniable chemistry. It's possible Lazard requests out, with his eyes set on Pittsburgh. "The Jets don't have the deepest receiver room, but they could prefer to give all of the targets to the younger guys anyway. Plus, if the team trades Lazard, it could save over $2 million." It makes more sense for New York to trade Lazard than cut him, given the dead cap they'd incur. However, the Jets might not be in a rush to move on from him. They negotiated a new contract in the offseason, taking him from an initial mark of four years and $44 million down to one year and $2.5 million. Keeping him around (or trading him to his preferred destination) would be good politics post-negotiation, and it lets him have a say in that development. He was also surprisingly efficient. In 2024, his 37 catches, 530 yards, and six touchdowns weren't all that impressive. But he managed the 13th-most expected points added per target and the 33rd-most total expected points added among receivers with at least 50 targets (per nfelo). Advertisement That's more than enough to keep around in an ancillary role, especially at his new number. Lazard reeks of Rodgers-era resource management, but there's a world in which he redefines his tenure in 2025. Club World Cup: Jack Grealish left out of Man City squad

MIAMI (AP) — Jack Grealish has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Club World Cup. City manager Pep Guardiola named a 27-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off in Miami on Saturday, with Grealish a notable omission. Advertisement The England forward was a British record signing when he moved to City from Aston Villa for 100 million pounds ($139 million then) in 2021 and went on to help the club win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a host of other trophies. But he has become an increasingly peripheral figure and made only seven league starts last season. The 29-year-old Grealish's absence from the Club World Cup will add to the growing expectation that he will leave during the offseason, with Guardiola embarking on a squad rebuild following the team's first trophyless season in eight years. City's squad includes four new players signed in time to take part in the month-long tournament in the United States: Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. Advertisement In January, City also spent big to sign Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis as Guardiola began his overhaul of a squad that saw its dominance of English soccer broken by Liverpool last season. If Grealish goes, he is likely to be one of a number of players to move on. Kevin De Bruyne is leaving at the end of his contract this month and Kyle Walker is also likely to go after a loan move to AC Milan in January; as expected, neither player was in the squad. City's first match at the 32-team tournament is against Wydad Casablanca next Wednesday in Philadelphia. The other teams in the group are Juventus and Abu Dhabi's Al Ain. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer: James Robson, The Associated Press
