One horrified witness told Manchester Evening News that they heard screams moments after the bus hit the bridge.
They said: "It [was] probably two minutes before I got there.
"I could just hear screaming coming from the top of the bus."
The 100 bus departed from Shudehill and was travelling to Salford, Trafford Centre and Warrington.
Shocking images show firefighters at the scene, and, according to witnesses, an air ambulance also attended the incident.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We are currently responding to a collision between a bus and a bridge at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles.
"Emergency services are currently on scene as part of the ongoing work. Please avoid the area as road closures are currently in place."

Scots dog sitter filmed dragging hounds by neck hit with animal care warning

Kiki Sutherland, in her 60s, was filmed hauling the pets around a garden while she was meant to be taking care of them. An Aberdeenshire dog sitter who was filmed dragging hounds by the scruff of their necks has been hit with a warning from animal welfare chiefs. ‌ Kiki Sutherland, in her 60s, was filmed hauling the pets around a garden at a house in Monymusk in the horrifying clip. In the footage, which was revealed by the Record earlier this week, Sutherland could be seen stomping around the garden with the scruff of a Dachshund-type dog in her fist. ‌ She was then seen marching towards a Spaniel before grabbing it by the back of its neck, hauling it backwards, picking it up and throttling its loose skin. The matter has been investigated by both the Scottish SPCA (SSPCA) and Aberdeenshire Council, who confirmed the property did not have a license to look after the animals. ‌ The SSPCA probe identified that while the manhandling of the pets was inappropriate, there was no evidence of physical injury. Sutherland was issued an Animal Welfare Notice (AWN), otherwise known as a care notice, on Friday. ‌ An AWN is issued when an inspector believes the person is failing to adequately ensure the animal's welfare, but the situation doesn't immediately warrant prosecution. A spokesperson for the SSPCA said: 'The SSPCA has thoroughly investigated a recent incident in Monymusk following concerns raised by members of the public over a video. "Our team, including veterinarians, analysed the original video footage and confirmed that while the handling of the dogs was inappropriate and likely caused distress, there was no evidence of physical injury. ‌ "As a result, an AWN has been issued to the individual involved, providing guidance on the humane treatment of animals. We have also worked alongside Aberdeenshire Council, who are addressing separate concerns relating to licensing. "We thank the public for their vigilance and continue to urge anyone who witnesses suspected cruelty or neglect to contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.' ‌ The council has also written a letter to Sutherland warning her that any commercial boarding of animals must cease at the premises immediately. The Record previously spoke to the owner of the two-year-old spaniel involved in the sickening scene. Mark Lawrie said he was left "horrified" after watching the clip. ‌ The 55-year-old said: "I was sent the clip and I was absolutely horrified watching it. She was so heavy handed with my dog, Buddy, when she didn't need to be at all. " Buddy is the most loving and affectionate dog with the sweetest nature - he's obedient and does most things you say. "You put your dog into the trust of someone else because you think they'll take good care of them. It makes me feel sick that someone could handle Buddy like this when he is so gentle." ‌ On Facebook, Sutherland is the admin of a private pet group called 'Crazy Dog Crew'. Mark handed Buddy over to Sutherland for two weeks after his other dog came into season. He claims that she is known in the area for doing dog walks and boarding, and he trusted her through word of mouth. But Mark said she offered to look after Buddy for free. ‌ He continued: "She took Buddy as a favour for me and no money was exchanged but it obviously raises concern if this is how she is treating animals. Whether or not she takes money from others for it, I do not know, but I'm not happy with how she treated Buddy and my wife was crying after watching the clip. "She didn't need to manhandle him like that and she knows it. He would have just followed her to wherever she was going. She didn't need to use such force." A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council said: 'Our investigation has concluded. A warning letter has been issued advising that any commercial boarding of animals would require a licence and that the premises does not currently hold such a licence, therefore any commercial boarding of animals must cease at the premises. Any unlicensed boarding of animals may be reported to the Fiscal.'

Scots prison officer sacked for ‘refusing to say trans male cons are women'

David Toshack, 50, was set to take up a job as a prison custody officer (PCO) at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court for firm GeoAmey. The army veteran was at a training course on January 7 where the issue of transgender prisoners was discussed. When he said he wouldn't be comfortable calling a trans male con by their preferred pronouns and his view a man cannot be a woman at a safeguarding workshop he was told to leave the room. He was then sacked the same day despite positive feedback from his instructors. He was told his views were against the law and GeoAmey policy. But church-going David was shocked by the decision after believing a job as a PCO would be a great role for him after his time in the Army. He told the Daily Mail: "I'm just a normal, working class person who's never been in trouble with the law before, not got a criminal record, lived a good life. "I've been prepared to go and fight and die for my country, and then I have come back here and been told that there's certain things you can't think or can't say." Not taking the decision without a fight, David is now taking the firm to an employment tribunal. He claims he was the subjected to unlawful discrimination and harassment because of his beliefs. Scots prison offers 'facing punishment' if they call trans rapists male The case is set to go before a tribunal later this year. David is being represented by Margaret Gribbon, the same solicitor representing nurse Sandie Peggie who was suspended by NHS Fife after challenging a trans doctor about using a women's changing room. He added: "There must be loads of folk like me who don't have any of that, who are on their own, so I want to show folk you can stand up against this stuff." Earlier this year a landmark supreme court ruling sided with feminist campaigners and said a woman means a biological female. It followed a three year legal battle between campaign group For Women Scotland and the Scottish Government over controversial self-ID laws. David's case could bring forward more claims from jail staff across the country if it is successful. In April we told how Scottish prison officers are still facing disciplinary action if they call male transgender inmates "he" or "him. A spokesperson for GeoAmey said: "As this matter will be subject to tribunal proceedings, it would not be appropriate to comment at this time."

Mum 'tried to sacrifice son' before killing her sweet children aged just two and nine

When a young mum killed both her young children who were described as 'only having love in their hearts' it shook the local community - but what she told the police when she turned herself in has sparked even more questions A mum who killed her two small children in an alleged effort to 'sacrifice her son' may plead not guilty by reason of insanity, according to lawyers. ‌ Ashley Parmeley, 36, of Festus, Missouri, was originally charged with second-degree murder after she walked into the Festus Police Department on May 28 last year, telling police she had killed both her children earlier that day. When police searched her vehicle they found Scarlet, 9, inside the trunk, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. ‌ Parmeley first tried to kill her 2-year-old son, Isaac, in St Francois County, Missouri and then shot dead her 9-year-old daughter, The Independent reports. It comes after a woman, 20, was found dead on bus with 26 iPhones glued to her body. ‌ She later allegedly realized her son Isaac was still alive and drove north to the Timber Creek Resort, where she is said to have drowned him in a water fountain. Parmeley is said to have told investigators that she intended to "sacrifice" Isaac before she killed both of the children, although the statement did not elaborate on what exactly Parmeley meant by sacrificing her child. ‌ She is being charged with one count of first-degree murder in Jefferson County, where she allegedly killed her son, and another charge of first-degree murder in St Francois County, where she allegedly killed her daughter. Parmeley is being represented by a public defender and has not yet entered a plea but reports from across the pond suggest she may claim she was suffering mentally. ‌ The killings shook the community of Missouri to the core. Ginny Russell, whose daughter played baseball with Scarlet, said she would be missed and was an "amazing little girl." "I can't fathom why this would happen to anybody, let alone to two sweet children that had nothing but love in their hearts," Brandy Trask, who lives near Ms Parmeley and whose daughter also played with Scarlet, told WEAU reporters. Paremeley had reportedly struggled with mental health issues prior to the tragedy, according to a report by KMOV, and spoke of her struggle in a Facebook post in 2020. "I isolated myself," she reportedly wrote at the time. "I came off as very timid and unfriendly and in all reality, I needed a friend more than anything. Always questioning if the kids would be happier or better off without me being their primary caregiver because I knew that they deserved a much better role model." The mum had been involved in a six-year custody battle with her daughter's father and also became the guardian of her 11-year-old niece, who left Parmeley's care after turning 18. Court records also show that Parmeley's uncle murdered his parents - Ms Parmeley's grandparents - in 1999.
